I'm gonna do it

Tiki • May 13, 2009 12:56 pm
I've wanted to go back to school for years, but every time I try, I either get pregnant or someone divorces me, which really throws me for a loop.

Monday I'm going to head down to PSU and talk to someone about enrollment and financial aid. I don't really know how it all works, but I'm going to find out. I can definitely work part-time while in school full-time, and my youngest is in full-day kindergarten, which gives me time for day classes.

As an older minority female single parent with a 3.9 GPA going into the sciences, I'm pretty confident I will be able to get decent aid to cover tuition. My main worry is getting the financial aid I need to pay my bills. If I can really for real pull this off, it would mean I could have my PhD by the time I'm 45!

I really hope this works out. Wish me luck!

Good Luck! :D

Great idea Tiki.

What sort of field are you going to study? What institution?
Tiki • May 13, 2009 10:52 pm
Portland State University, probably biochemistry for starters.

Good luck, Tiki! I hope you can get the financial aid all in a row. ::crosses fingers for you::

So today I applied for co-enrollment at PSU and PCC, and I started on my FAFSA but I don't have my 2008 tax papers back yet and my CPA is on vacation until the 27th. :(
capnhowdy • May 18, 2009 9:02 pm
So I can forget about you getting pregnant then, right?

Just a bump in the road Tiki don't worry. Anything you want bad enough will be yours! :)

Just file an EAD GTFO form with the STFU addendum attached and you'll be AFU PDQ.

God, I hope so! It would take a miracle, though, so I'm not too worried. If I turn up pregnant, I'll be sure to let you know so you can worship the new Messiah.

Thanks! I think I'll have my documents in plenty of time for fall term, and I'll just pay cash for the one class I want to take to brush up on math this summer.

Good plan Tiki. I get the impression you are rapidly turning this year from one to remember for all the wrong reasons, into one that you'll remember as a brilliant turning point and the beginning of an exciting and strengthening period of your life. Way to go girl! We right behind you.

@ Lj. I think you may have missed the FFS form in which you establish your credentials through a 3000 word essay.

Ahh, paperwork. I remember my uni days with a strangely fond eye-rolling contempt for the red tape.
After three years, postgrads had to submit, every six months, a statement explaining why they hadn't finished their thesis. Most people handed in at least a couple of these, I and many others must have managed seven or eight. These statements were routinely circulated amongst friends and colleagues, cut-and-pasted, paraphrased, and generally short-circuited with routinely regurgitated bullshit.
Writing first year essays was therefore excellent preparation for my future career!

Hey Tiki:

Your bookkeeper has been back for two days now. What's the status?
capnhowdy • May 30, 2009 8:37 am
She may have pissed off the bookkeeper also.
