government

henry quirk • May 4, 2009 2:43 pm
i don't expect an answer (too much work to think, or, to put aside unreasoning distaste) but i ask anyway...

if you had the power to build a government from the foundation up, from scratch, what would it be?

would you use an existing model?

would you tweak an existing model?

would you cobble up something new?

why would you choose (or build) as you do?

that is: what philosophy/moral/ethic would drive your government?

(mods: if you think this would fly better in another sub-forum, please, feel free to move the thread... ;) )
lumberjim • May 4, 2009 2:57 pm
why you gotta start out being a dick?
Flint • May 4, 2009 3:03 pm
We aren't smart enough to write his papers for him...

It is actually a very good question and could result in a great thread, unfortunately true to form you've shown yourself to be a distasteful, pompous ass.
henry quirk • May 4, 2009 3:09 pm
as i said: too much work...to put aside unreasoning distaste

will anyone actually answer the question(s)?

is there anyone who can suppress the impulse to 'react', and simply 'act'?

so far: no

next!

If I could start my own government, it would have a shift key.

I feel a bumper sticker coming on.
henry quirk • May 4, 2009 3:16 pm
thank you, flint...at least you began an answer, even if as half-assed insult

that's something at least...
glatt • May 4, 2009 3:19 pm
I'll answer your question henry, and I'll answer seriously.

If I had the power to set up a new government however I'd like, that must mean I would have considerable power indeed. I would never relinquish such considerable power. So I would set up a dictatorship with me as the dictator. I would seek out trusted advisers to actually run things and I would supervise it all from a distance or up close, depending on my interest in that particular area.

you use the word 'unreasoning'

I have a reason.

you're a douchebag

now go shit in your hat

glatt:

how do you think the citizenry would fare in your society?

how deeply would you control the society?

that is: beyond safeguarding your power, how deeply would you manage the economy, the arts, individual work choices, etc.

i guess i wanna know how open or closed your society would be
glatt • May 4, 2009 3:42 pm
I hadn't really thought that far.

Mostly, I'd just want people to have a good time and all get along. Be prosperous, and all that. And of course, I would want to be very prosperous and powerful myself.

Except someone would surely try to assassinate me to take my power. So never mind. I don't want any part of it.
lumberjim • May 4, 2009 3:54 pm
too late!

I've already taken out a contract.

Meursault • May 4, 2009 3:59 pm
in the meursaultocracy women would outnumber men 5 to 1 and i would always control the remote.

and use of the word "utilize" would incur flogging.

and that's all.

oh, and "paradigm" too.

and that's all.

well, and this chair...

glatt:

i wonder how you'd reconcile holding the bulk of the power (and the probably draconian measures you'd have to implement to do such a thing) with society being peaceful and prosperous

seems to me: utopia (and it is a kind of utopia you propose, yes?) is unachievable, mostly because there's always gonna be one who says 'no' to the cage no matter how comfortable it might be

and: it seems that's what your society might be...a large, comfortable, cage...it almost follows it would have to be...to hold the power: you'd have to suppress dissent of any kind (except for the carefully cultivated kind)...your fingers would have to be in multiple pies to ensure you remain the man

and for the bulk of folks in your society: this might suit them fine...but all it takes is one to dissent violently and cleverly, and the house of cards collapses

most certainly: someone would come along and try to take you out...some would attempt this because they want your power...a small (perhaps as small as one) number would attempt to take you out simply because -- again -- a gilded cage is still a cage

if you would, glatt, think on how your society might be structured so you retain full power while the citizenry simultaneously 'have a good time, get along, and are prosperous'

in part: i think your solutions will have roots in how you came to power in the first place (whatever scenario you envision)

i'm curious how you (or someone like you) might make it all work...

Really. Never mind. I don't want any part of it. As dictator, to ensure my own safety and power, I'd have to kill my political opposition. Even my family. Look at the royal family in Nepal. You can't trust anyone when you are at the top. And I certainly don't want the work of creating a government if I don't get the power.
TheMercenary • May 4, 2009 6:57 pm
A dictatorship with me in charge. Many would be fucked.
regular.joe • May 4, 2009 7:08 pm

We had a thread about this topic ages ago and in fact quite a number of us joined a forum where you actually do create your own government and shape it to however you like.

It didn't really seem to have reasonable outcomes, and I can't remember the name of the website, but I'm sure someone here could, if they could be bothered and wanted to have the discussion again.
ZenGum • May 4, 2009 11:06 pm
So, the game is, ask a really hard question, complain about not getting serious answers, then when someone does offer something thoughtful, pick it to pieces.

Meh.
classicman • May 4, 2009 11:22 pm
If he didn't use the word "I" so much I would have thought he was a tw sockpuppet.
xoxoxoBruce • May 5, 2009 1:41 am
I'd model it after England we me as king. Rich with no responsibility, woo hoo.
Apollo • May 5, 2009 3:23 am
Hey now, the queen has tons of responsibilities.
It's called rule of law bitchz.

I would build a government of the people, by the people, and for the people in which only I would hold the legal status of person (therefore the conundrum).
