May 3, 2009: Glass Floor

Oh dear, ladies. Until now you've only had to worry about the glass ceiling, now this.
You now have to worry about the glass floor, if you don't want the perverts looking up your skirt...





... from 1,353 feet below.




I realize they have a glass floor out at the Grand Canyon, but there's not likely to be anyone below and you're not likely to be wearing a skirt.

…these new glass enclosures that extend 4.3 feet beyond the side of the building. Beneath peoples’ feet lies the sprawling Illinois city - 103 stories, or 1,353 feet, below. Just an inch-and-a-half of glass separates the visitor from the street underneath. The attraction is due to open in June.

Good thing it's in Chicago, where they have an honest local government with top notch building inspectors to insure your safety.

I hope they have drainage on that thing cuz I'm sure I'm not the only one that would piss himself dry on that thing.

We have one similar in Melbourne, the Eureka Tower..the worlds tallest Residential building, with skydeck and viewing *cube*.

Its awesome, but I near crapped myself when the cube moved.

I can barely even look at the picture. I certainbly cuoldn't stand on it. It gives me vertigo just thinking about it. I found the glass lift at the Bolton branch of Debenhem's difficult enough.

I doubt anyone could see up your skirt, if you happened to be wearing one, from that height.

when we went to the Grand Canyon, we sat on an outcropping of rock that was swaying with the breeze. when i walked to the edge, i lost reference because it was so high up, and had to shrink back before vertigo set in.

I never had a problem with heights, but when I was in the CN Tower in Toronto, I was surprised at my own reluctance to step on that glass. Once I did it, I was back to my old fearless self. At the time, it was the tallest building in the world, shortly after 9/11.

1-1/2" glass is very strong but having said that I wouldn't try rushing the glass wall like this fellow:

I live in Toronto and I remember the news reports about him back in 1993. I couldn't believe anybody could be that stupid. I calculate it took him about five seconds to hit the ground.

The thing with that cube is that it actually slides out of the building, so its flush with the wall, then moves out into position. It was the initial "there's nothing underneath me" when the cube moved out.

Heights dont bother me at all, but I have felt that same feeling when standing on the edge of something look down and get the "whoaaaa" feeling.

I doubt I would step out on that glass floor, but I could be tempted if I could take my cat out and put her on it - for at least as long at it takes to get some footage for YouTube.:D

No thanks. But I will do like sweet and see if my cat is interested. Or my husband.

Actually, that would be clean up on Wacker Drive. I can tell from the picture that it's going to be 'rat cheer' in the Sears Tower.

A quick google search confirmed.

If you look really close by the right foot of the guy taking the picture, you can see me going into the building. :D

I was thinking about this project this morning. The Sears Tower already sways a foot or so at the top in high winds. Won't this projection cause it to sway more?

Perhaps, but then again the sway of the building from the winds might be counterbalanced by the people swaying from fear-induced nausea. :greenface
