They really are not social groups. They are just virtual groups in the Cellar.
It appears that you can't post in a discussion thread in a group unless you are a member of that group.
Otherwise it would be a thread.

I tried to click a group to attend, just so I could say I'd tried it before objecting that it's even more divisive than Chat... And it wouldn't me join anyway.

I was tempted to do a British Comedy Group.
Then keep subdividing into people who liked specific sitcoms, then particular series of so, then per episode, then could quote the best times, and then could do YouTube impressions of them - with valid accents and intonations. All the while having complete control over people getting banned for not liking specific things. BWAHAhahahahaha! Then I remembered that already exists in my head as a criteria for friendship and/ or dating. Which is why I have none.

The weird thing is, it appears that any user can change any group, but the settings are explicitly set not to allow that.

It turns out he inherited the ability when he was moderator of his own section. I've removed that moderatorship so all should return to normal.
