Mystery Food Exchange

Perry Winkle • Mar 21, 2009 11:28 pm
Not what they serve at the nursing home cafeteria.

Just like the cookie exchange but without the cookies. Bread, scones, lemon bars, candy... Whatever's not cookies (sheet cookies are okay, since they're not really cookies) and won't spoil in transit.

If you want to participate, PM or email me your email address, mailing address and any allergies. If you email me, please include your cellar handle too. If you're willing to ship international and you're going to make something that will make the trip, let me know. People outside the US, I'm happy to organize things for you guys too.

Also, if you participated in the cookie exchange let me know who you sent to and who sent to you and I can try to make sure you don't end up sending to all of the same people.

Friday the 27th of March is the cutoff date for getting your name in the hat. I will try to divy things up so everyone is sending to 3 people. I'll PM/email the assignments by March 30th. Then hopefully everyone can send out their goodies by April 13.

By special request, a slight modification/clarification of the rules: Non-homemade things are acceptable as long as they are something special. Regional favorites, hard to find items. Use your best judgement.

Perry, you've had a foot either side of the pond - what do you think would be suitable to send to the States?

I'd love to participate, but right now, everything quintessentially English I can think of needs to be chilled. I mean, I've already done tea & biscuits (Clod's Secret Santa). I know I am missing aisles and aisles of the supermarket in my mind (no I am NOT cooking!) but I seem to be stuck.

Jaffa Cakes maybe?
They're not really biscuits after all. Or Tunnocks Tea Cakes?

I'm certainly up for something savoury in exchange. Slim Jims or Jerky?
Shush my mouth, I'll get what I'm given!

I'll PM you my details as an official entry, but I'd be grateful if you and Monster and Pico ect could give me an idea of what would be considered strange and exotic in the States.

This sounds so cool! As much as I want to join in, I'm going to have to skip the mystery food trade because I'm trying to finish up my last semester of undergrad and the work load is driving me crazy. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures and living vicariously, though.

SG, in the order I'd want them: a Crunchie bar, clotted cream, mushy peas, HP sauce, pork pie (or any meat pie eaten cold).

Linda's Pastys makes great pies. They're based in Anaconda, MT. We can get them at Safeway in Helena. Might be able to send some to you more successfully and safely than SG could.
Sundae • Mar 22, 2009 5:33 pm
But I can do some of the others! Great ideas ;)
Undertoad • Mar 22, 2009 5:35 pm
Anything at this site actually.

Except for two things. One, no Turkish Delights. They are foul.

Two, no toffee. People think British dentistry is bad, but it's actually that the toffee is so freakin' thick and sticky that it pulls out all of your teeth. The only way to sensibly eat it is to put it in your mouth, allow it to stick to your teeth like that stuff dentists use to get an impression of your teeth, and just let it slowly melt.

Toffee is teh Grim. (I like the TD though, Sorry)

My SIL admitted the toffees are the first thing to go out of the Quality Street in their house.
I had to tell my bro how wrong this was. He agreed.

Don't worry, I'd never send anything I wouldn't eat.

PS, if I get you chick, I'll go to bloody town. You beauty, you.

This sounds good to me. I'm in.

My favorite surprise food/condiments are anything hot, spicy, bitter, sour, salty or otherwise exotic and different.

meatloaf and creamed spuds for you then.... or something "experimental..."
Sundae • Mar 23, 2009 6:45 am
Huh?
No fair.

Postage to the States is minimal if you choose something light.
Trust me, It's not going to be a tin of Roses.

Look, I only get £120.24 a fortnight.
And much of that goes on debts/ paying the 'rents for living here.
Let me have a bit of fun with the rest...?
Perry Winkle • Mar 23, 2009 8:31 pm
Beestie suggested that those participating should probably list the types of things they like or don't like. Either post it here or send it to me.

I think it kind of lessens the surprise but makes the surprise more likely to be a good one.

We're up to four people so far.
Tulip • Mar 23, 2009 11:19 pm
So, would you prefer homemade stuffs? Or it doesn't matter, as long as non-homemade stuffs meet the requirement?
Perry Winkle • Mar 24, 2009 12:09 am
Homemade stuff is preferred. Remarkable, desirable, regional or hard to find store bought stuff is acceptable.
Sheldonrs • Mar 24, 2009 10:00 am
So a jar of sun dried mayo probably would go bad, huh? :D
Perry Winkle • Mar 31, 2009 9:24 pm
Only have 5 people, including me. One of those 5 is overseas.

Anyone else interested? Anyone involved think we should call it off?
DanaC • Mar 31, 2009 9:32 pm
There just is no point my attempting to commit to posting things.
Tulip • Apr 1, 2009 12:17 am
Is it too soon after the cookie exchange? Who would more likely participate if we'd wait a bit to do this? If more people would be interested then, then I guess we could wait. Any other opinions?
monster • Apr 1, 2009 7:26 pm
You could just share a drink bottle with a child and take second glug...
Trilby • Apr 8, 2009 9:11 am
so...we aren't doing this?

Well, PLEASE PM me if we're gonna do some food exchange in the future. I'm up for getting some of beestie's balls.

Okay, whenever it's rescheduled, I'm in. I'll PM you Perry.
And I'll eat pretty much anything.
And what are Beestie Balls? I'm intrigued.
Perry Winkle • Apr 9, 2009 6:54 pm
Okay, let's extend the entry date until May 1st. That sound good to everyone?

Y'know, I will be inviting long-term Cellarites to a BBQ this summer. It can be a potluck.

I tired making Wolf's drunken meatballs, but mine didn't come out that great.

Maybe you were too tired to get drunk?
