Wii or Wii not?

Pooka • Mar 18, 2009 4:36 pm
Contemplating buying a Wii... particularly to buy the Wii fit, and the music and the Scuba experience... etc... figure there is something for everyone in the family on it and I have a personal trainer in my living room that I can visit periodically throught the day as childrens allow...

Tell me your experiences... anyone had any scuccess with Wii fit?

Why should I or shouldn't I buy it.
Clodfobble • Mar 18, 2009 7:39 pm
Our older kids like it. Mr. Clod injured his arm trying to beat his bowling high score. That's about all I know.

We have one, and I have to admit that we enjoy it. Activities are scored, and the top 10 places are displayed with the Mii and the score, so we compete against each other and ourselves. I work out at a gym, but am too klutzy to do a public aerobics class. The Wii Fit lets me work on my own game, while learning steps, in my own home. Exposure and practice with yoga has given me a genuine interest in learning more of it in RL. Wii Fit will chart progress and notice if you skip a day or two - a polite comment will be mark it. Funny but effective! I'm not a group groupie, so it works for me.

How best to PURCHASE a Wii system? Possibly with the Fit attachment and necessary controllers as part of a package deal? Do any particular online or brick-and-mortar retailers put Wii packages on fantastic sale at various times? Your advice/experience please... . . . P.S. lol@nintendonitis

Wii got the Wii for Christmas. Came with Wii Sports. Not Fit. Don't have Fit. Can't comment on Fit other than to say wii want it. I have to say that I love regular Wii. I can play my hardest against the kids, and still not always win. When I'm in the back yard, kicking a soccer ball around with them or whatever, I have to go easy on them because they are just kids. The Wii levels the playing field and they cream me as often as I cream them. Good interactive family fun. They love it when they beat me fair and square.

Since wii all got good at Wii Sports, wii've been looking for new games to play. The strength of Wii is the motion control, so wii look for games that really use that. Most don't seem to. Most/many games are just regular video games that have also been released for Wii and you just sit on the couch pushing buttons.

Mercury Meltdown was the second Wii game we bought, and I would recommend it. You tilt the controller to tilt the virtual board on the screen and make a blob of mercury roll around and do stuff. It's fun.

Wii were going to buy the Wii fit for Christmas for my older son & his girlfriend, but they were out. However, we bought some kind of adventure game with the same attributes - they love it. Of course, it sounds like a herd of animals are running thru the house once they get started.

Is the Wii for $249 and the Wii fit for $89 a good deal?
wolf • Mar 29, 2009 2:26 pm
Get the Wii. Do it. Do it. Do it.

And Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess, which totally rocks.

The sports things were cute, but I go over to my friend's house to work on my game of Zelda. Nearly, nearly to the end. I'm digging it.

The Wii Fit sounds awesome. I was going to the the Yourself Fitness for PS2, but never got around to it.
Flint • Mar 29, 2009 2:36 pm
I love the Zelda universe. The last game I played all the way through was Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

We have a piece of fluorite with the triforce in it.

I bought our wii as a package, with wii fit, wii sport and controllers.

Im still on the fence about it though, I like it, the kids prefer xbox at this stage. 4yr old isnt up to movement and button work, whereas he doesnt have any problems with xbox, 6yr old still prefers the xbox games at this stage.

I think that's an average price. Rumors are out about a Wii II, but they are said to be only rumors so there is little hope they'll go down much. I just bought a new game that will let me "fly" WWII aircraft, including a Mustang (my favorite), and I'd have no problem with the price for the Wii because I know how much fun I'll have with it. zoooooooooom! rat-a-tat-pow! :)

We've got Wi and Wii fit. It is a lot of fun for short periods of time and then everyone gets bored and it doesn't come out for a couple months again. If you do get the Wii fit also buy Jillian's (The biggest loser) Workout game. It's fun just to watch people do it.

That's what I'm hearing from many of my buddies who are into gaming. It's more of a toy than a real video game machine, especially if you're into games that have graphics above what the Wii is capable of (it's stuck in 2003). It is comparable to games for the iPhone, there's only so much you can do with just a touch screen on that, and with the Wii there's only so many applications for motion control. So that combined with the limited selection of decent games means it mostly sits unused, only played in spurts when nostalgia for a Zelda/Metroid/Mario game comes up. And even then, you're wasting a good chunk of change on the Wii and it's motion controls if you're just into legacy games like those titles, esp. if it's a Gamecube title because you're forced to use the old Gamecube controller for those. Better off buying a Gamecube in that case, cheaper and near equal graphical capabilities. A great majority of quality new games are coming to the Xbox360/PS3/PC, the Wii is being propped up by cultural and media hype only to be used infrequently by a large number of those who buy it in favor of other systems.
:2cents: from a gamer.
Flint • Mar 31, 2009 1:22 pm
We're not gamers.

I disagree that better graphics make better games. I rate playability as the only item that counts, so I question that "decent games" and "quality games" means the same thing to you as it does to me. . . . Thank you for your input.
glatt • Mar 31, 2009 1:25 pm
I don't think the Wii is meant to appeal to gamers. I think it's meant to appeal to families. Everyone knows that the graphics are lame. Wii isn't about the graphics.

We just got Wii fit a week ago and are having a lot of fun with that. It gets you off the couch.

I think a lot of people are agreeing with you, Flint.

Look at the adoption of the Nintendo DS over the PSP. The PSP has far better graphics, but the Nintendo DS has far greater adoption numbers.

I've got both, but it's sad how few good games are coming out for the PSP.

Quote where I said you were bud.

I never said better graphics alone make better games.
I'm going by industry reviews of games per console in saying that "decent games" and "quality games" are lacking for the Wii.

No good graphics don't always equal good games. I still play my old Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 because of something called "replay value" in some of the games for those systems. Those two systems are way behind the current curve of game graphics. My point is that the motion controls that the Wii is most famous for only carry it so far because of its inherent limitations. The percentage of poorly rated games per console is heavily tilted towards the Wii as well. Even my non "gamer" friends who own the system were all excited and giddy about it for starters, [stereotypical high-pitched girl voice]OMG Wii tennis is soo fun!, then after a few months it just sits or is put away and forgotten about. All in all it's just not worth the $ when you look at other options. It's not entirely about the graphics since the long term playing experience is what matters most, and the Wii lacks there as well.

From a list of the top selling games per platform and their MetaCritic.com scores in an effort to find out which console has the best quality games:

"The results are as follows

Wii - Average 75.55%
PS3 - Average 81.44%
Xbox 360 - Average 87.375%

But that is only the rating of the top 10 sellers which really is not a fair rating. What really is required is a comparison over the consoles entire catalogue.

Wii:
+80% = 6 titles to choose from
+90% = 2 titles to choose from
PS3
+80% = 18 titles to choose from
+90% = 1 title to choose from
X360
+80% = 58 titles to choose from
+90% = 7 titles to choose from"

But hey if you find it fun go for it and be careful not to accidentally chuck your controller into the tv. Its your money, you can waste it however you want :D

Time out both of you. If you keep it up you'll get no juice at lunch.

anyway, we are not a family of gamers, either. I like the old school graphics. We have PS2 and Wii and maybe 10 games between the two. The Wii is fun if you have time to play it. The tennis game was amusing until LL figured out he could totally screw me by barely moving his controller thus preventing me from ever having the chance to actually hit the ball. Same with baseball. that family laughed for quite awhile at the Wii fit stuff but then it lost it's novelty. In all honesty I probably would veto Mrs L's purchase if I had to do it again.

What I don't like is the Wiimotes aren't set up to just respond exactly with your motions. Example: In the Star Wars game you use a Wiimote to fight with your lightsaber. Seems pretty straightforward, right? You're using a Wiimote in place of a lightsaber so your actions should match what you seen on the screen. Unfortunately you have to learn a complex set of twitches, turns, and button pushing combinations to actually do anything. It is just like having a normal controller, but less intuitive.

All that being said, the bowling, baseball, tennis, golf, and Wii Fit functions can be a lot of fun.

How 'bout I accidentally chuck the controller at your ƒuckin' face? Huh?

This is pretty funny because I just built a new computer with dual (nVidia SLI) video cards...
...and so I had to buy Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to see something with nice physics/graphics.

Ha. Well the Wii is more for the wife and kids...
Flint • May 7, 2009 12:39 pm
We got our Wii fit. I think it's a good idea, and well implemented.

This goes back to the unique origins of Nintendo's "NES" concept. At a time when "video games" were considered a fad that was on its way out, Nintendo marketing had to find a way to move their units. So instead of calling it a "video game" they called it "Nintendo ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM" or NES. Something that is fun for the whole family. And that concept remains solid today with the Wii. We have made our little Miis, and my 2yo daughter asks to see "the family game" on TV.

I would beat one of the jinx's to death with the other jinx, so I could get to you faster.
