Bowhunting

Do any of ya'll like to bowhunt? These photos show why you rally have to be careful selecting a bowhunting partner.

That is a jaw dropper. Usually bow hunters only get hurt falling out of tree stands because they have to get a good shot. That arrow must have been deflected.

Eww.

The skull did a good job though.
LabRat • Feb 26, 2009 4:36 pm
"That's gonna leave a mark..."
dar512 • Feb 26, 2009 4:38 pm
When they said, "hunting for arrowheads", I didn't expect this.

So...you're saying you want to line up skull types of various strengths and test shooting flint-tipped arrows at them?

In the first pic I thought he was eating an apple. I'm like "why's he just sitting there eating an apple like nothing happened?"

HungLikeJesus • Feb 26, 2009 6:53 pm
That's William Tell's son (which explains why he was eating the apple).
Shawnee123 • Feb 26, 2009 6:57 pm
Explains the shot, too.

The guy who did that is one stupid hunter.
Perry Winkle • Feb 27, 2009 2:19 pm
Boom. Headshot!

As a bowhunter, let me say: That man is not a bowhunter. He is a bowhuntee.
Elspode • Feb 27, 2009 10:35 pm
1. Ow?

2. Did this guy just walk away with a headache, or does he sit around now and go "ah-pfffffbbbbttttt...."?

I'll hazard a (semi-) educated guess that there will be very little brain damage - the tip didn't go too far through the skull. Further, the place it struck is mostly concerned with sensory processing, possibly higher level visual functions (again, edu-guessing). It would be hard to say what, if any, cognitive deficits would result. Perhaps a loss of ability to notice objects in a certain part of the visual field, or loss of ability to detect a certain kind of feature - vertical lines, symmetry, etc.
His language, spatial, motor, and abstract thought abilities all look well safe.

On second thought, the arrow must have arrived with significant force and this might have shaken the brain and caused general brain damage. Blood loss is also a risk. However, the chap looks like he never lost consciousness so he should be fine. Except for the little round hole in the back of his head where they cut the arrowhead out. You could sneak up and poke him in the brain. I guess they'll graft skin and a plate over it.

Zen, it also depends on how fast they got him to the OR and decompressed it. If the brain was minimally affected by the portion of the tip that penetrated the bigger issue is the bleeding from the vessels inside surface of the skull which will compress the brain from the inside. From the looks of things he got help pretty quick.

Im curious...just where did they take him?? It looks like he is in some kind of industrial shop!
sweetwater • Feb 28, 2009 4:03 pm
Involuntary trepanation. Ouch!
[btw, I used to say, "I need a trepantion like I need a hole in the head", but nobody every got it. ]
Shawnee123 • Feb 28, 2009 5:21 pm
I got it through inference...never heard that word before. I learned a new word today! :)
jinx • Feb 28, 2009 5:36 pm
I watched an awesome documentary on it years ago... people talking about how awesome they feel after doing it and stuff. Self trepanation with a power drill in the bathroom - woot!
Shawnee123 • Feb 28, 2009 5:43 pm
I have an electric screwdriver, will that suffice? *runs to toolbox*

When they're done carving the face, I wonder if they'll put a candle inside.
