Chris Onstad has developed a smart, quirky, adult comic strip with memorable characters speaking memorable adult dialogue and the interesting, original adult dramatic situations they find themselves in. Most of the characters are cats, although there is no inter-species conflict with characters of other species.
When I say "adult" I don't mean X-rated; I mean, of a very intelligent nature only fully appreciated by an adult mind. Although Onstad will occasionally draw nudity if it's called for.
Achewood takes some of its cues from the daily comic strip world, but probably more from alternative adult comic books like the
Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and
Omaha the Cat Dancer.
Roast Beef is the main character. Growing up in a wretched family situation has left him depressed, and his words are always in a smaller font; designating, one thinks, his low opinion of himself. As RB is the cat we would think ourselves to be, his buddy Ray Smuckles is the cat we all wish we could be: phenomenally rich, making snap decisions about everything simply because he can; an instinctive entrepreneur, who buys Airwolf and the head of Keith Moon from his special section of eBay.
Like The Simpsons, Achewood is populated by a rich cast of secondary characters with distinct personalities and roles.
Onstad is a foodie and puts a reference to food and or drink into almost every strip.
It takes at least three weeks of consumption to begin to "get it" but if you do "get it" you'll have to read every new comic as it's published.
