Born in the USA

when I was a pre-teen back in the UK, this was the dogs bollocks, the epitome of all that is America and therefore cool...

Now I'm an immigrant here -staying through choice, with one kid who was born here...but I'd be ashamed if he assumed this arrogance ...

Was it just an 80s thing? Or am i just way old? This was so cool when i was a kid in the UK. The music's still cool now, but the "message" sucks
bluecuracao • Feb 14, 2009 5:05 am
The message isn't meant to be arrogant at all...it's working class blues.

It really speaks to and about Jersey and Philly folks, as does most of Springsteen's stuff. Pride eked out of one's shitty, stuck situation....

yeah, I guess so... but couldn't he just be proud of his talent?

meh, it was a random youtube last night and i was just diasappointed that it didn't seem so awesome as it used to....
jinx • Feb 14, 2009 10:31 am
Very 80's... high unemployment and interest rates, cold war, Rocky movies...

Yes, but I doubt millions of people would pay him to sing about it.

It hasn't changed, maybe you have?
monster • Feb 14, 2009 7:50 pm
exactly... I'm all old and shit.... :(
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 14, 2009 7:54 pm
Older, but not old yet and definitely not shit.:headshake
monster • Feb 14, 2009 8:05 pm
aw thanks. that's probably the nicest thing you've ever said to me. Although I really meant ...and the shit that goes with it like grey hair and deteriorating eyesight.... *sigh* When I started to dye my hair purple 10 years ago, they was no grey. My roots are a little long right now and I see strands that glint in the sunlight rather than being mouse and lack-lustre..... who'dever have thunk I'd recall the mouse color fondly

yes, I know I'm being inconsistent by using US "color" and UK "grey", but I figured I might as well get a jump on the incontinent thing too.... ;)
lumberjim • Feb 14, 2009 8:41 pm
as an american, i think he sucks.
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 14, 2009 8:53 pm
Deadheads don't count.:haha:
capnhowdy • Feb 14, 2009 9:27 pm
I'm still trying to figure out wtf he's saying. And what I can understand makes absolutely no sense. Reminds me of how a passed out drunk would sound when you woke him up and asked him how he got here. Sounds kinda like Buckwheat, amplified, actually.
Shawnee123 • Feb 14, 2009 9:32 pm
Thanks for the laugh.

"unce tice fee tines a mady..."
classicman • Feb 15, 2009 12:04 am
FIRE the boss!
capnhowdy • Feb 15, 2009 6:46 am
No. Don't fire him. Somebody's gotta be the boss. The boss of what?

Shit.
Sundae • Feb 15, 2009 6:57 am
You're not the boss of me
footfootfoot • Feb 15, 2009 8:15 am
That song blew then and it blows now.
classicman • Feb 15, 2009 1:27 pm
Just work up a good thick hocker and grumble some shit. You too can be famous.
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 15, 2009 2:02 pm
You poor folks are just jealous of his wealth, fame & groupies. :p
Born down in a dead mans town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up
[...]
Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go

Monster, maybe it's just me, but this doesn't seem arrogant. It seems ironic, "cheering" for the U.S.A. while decrying its actions and present-day reality.

Whaddaya mean YOU poor folks?

And yes, I am jealous. And poor.
classicman • Feb 15, 2009 4:23 pm
Would that be we poor folk? I'm with you cap'n.
Gotta admit he does give hope that anyone can become famous and insanely rich.
capnhowdy • Feb 15, 2009 4:41 pm
I've seen xoB's doodads ons the doodad thread. If he isn't rich he's got some killer ass doodads that look expensive to me. Maybe he's actually Jimmy Hoffa.

I miss the doodad thread.

Can you say doodad? I can. heeheehee....

I didn't include myself because I like Springsteen, especially the E street band.
capnhowdy • Feb 15, 2009 8:26 pm
Great band. Powerful sound.
Maybe he has an accent that makes him hard to understand while he's in character. I always liked the T shirts w/ the star. What a star.
classicman • Feb 15, 2009 8:40 pm
I love the E street band - I just don't like him so much.
footfootfoot • Feb 15, 2009 9:54 pm
Born to run was a great album and for that I will forgive him his couple of extremely suckola songs.

But he is still on report
spudcon • Feb 15, 2009 10:19 pm
If all else fails, inadvertently drop a whole package of ExLax in front of the offending sucker.

What's a doodad thread?
Clodfobble • Feb 16, 2009 4:25 pm
A thread which no longer exists.
Pie • Feb 16, 2009 4:40 pm
Why was it deleted?!
Clodfobble • Feb 16, 2009 4:42 pm
Long story short: it was an accident.
capnhowdy • Feb 16, 2009 5:00 pm
It was one of the best threads we ever had.
capnhowdy • Feb 16, 2009 5:01 pm
But it no longer exists, because it was deleted.

Doodads are simply interesting lesser known items, pictures of which were posted in the namesake thread. Some of the doodads were memorabilia (i.e. souvenirs) which, upon reflection, were determined to be a potential security threat to the posters (e.g. like if you posted pictures of that stuff you brought back in your rucksack that customs didn't find)! The thread was inadvertently lost in an attempt to remove the unwanted items. It seems that significant disappointment over that loss has kept previous participants from reincarnating the thread.

Feel free to start another doodads thread if you like. I believe dwellars are currently more security conscious and that necessary changes can now be made without incident.
