Are you a 'Fringe Dwellar'?

Aliantha • Jan 18, 2009 6:29 pm
I think I am. I'm definitely not one of the cool kids, and I don't fit into any of the other sterotypes we seem to foster here either. Definitely not a sex kitten or a brainiac. Neither am I far left or right wing politically speaking. I'm not particularly funny and I have no sense of humour (or so I've been told) . I'm not a source of funny/interesting pictures. Oh, and I'm not American. lol

Are you a fringe dwellar too?
lumberjim • Jan 18, 2009 6:34 pm
no..I'm right in the middle of all of the cool cliques. but you already knew that.

oh and stfu.
Aliantha • Jan 18, 2009 6:39 pm
right after you kiss my arse.

I think I'm a fringe dwellar, but who knows. I'm not good with that sorta stuff.
Juniper • Jan 18, 2009 6:48 pm
I am. Because I'm still kinda new, I guess.
That, and I've yet to show my titties. :D
lumberjim • Jan 18, 2009 6:49 pm
here's a clue:

the more you share about your reality, the less of a fringe dwellar you'll be.

it's very simple

thanks,

jim
Perry Winkle • Jan 18, 2009 6:50 pm
I am. I show up and post some. Usually I don't check back for replies to my posts in any timely manner. I'm sort of a registered lurker, I suppose.
Juniper • Jan 18, 2009 6:51 pm
You know, that's kind of funny, because on other boards I've had people bitch at me for sharing TOO much. :p
You better be careful what you wish for.
Elspode • Jan 18, 2009 6:51 pm
Cool kids? There are cool kids here?

I'm so uncool I wouldn't have known if someone hadn't told me.

You're cool. You are definately cool. You're out there, doin your thing, in the way you want to do it, following your own groove. You're so cool, you are in danger of becoming a much loved figure in American literature :P

I always invisioned Elsp as a Merry Prankster from the days of the Magic Bus. :D

I was DEFINATELY on for a while. They kicked me off for trying to drive while tripping on some Mr. Natural. :D
Juniper • Jan 18, 2009 7:37 pm
Els reminds me of my friend Jaime. Same lifestyle, and a warm, wonderful guy. The only guy I know who could throw a naked hot tub party and nobody would think it was weird. Well, at least not anybody who was invited. :D
DanaC • Jan 18, 2009 7:40 pm
He reminds me of a friend of J's dad. An American anthropologist he spent time with in the Sudan. He's so lovely. I could sit and listen to him talk for hours. Which doesnt actually amount to a huge conversation, because he speaks slowly and thinks about what he says. A lot of Elspode's posts remind me of his tone. Thoughtful and considered, and non-judgemental.
sweetwater • Jan 18, 2009 9:58 pm
I'm not cool. Nor am I hot. I'm tepid, I suppose. But I'm smart & cool & humorous enough to recognize more & better in others, and that's enough to keep me here. If that makes me fringe, well, that doesn't make me cringe. I'm used to it. :)
Cloud • Jan 18, 2009 10:29 pm

monster • Jan 18, 2009 11:03 pm
Fringe means on the edge, the outside. How can anyone with nearly 10,000 posts make a claim to be "fringe"? Not getting the "in'jokes" doesn't make you "fringe", it just means the chances are that your post count is not augmented by posts that just say:

Srsly, this thead is just a place for those who don't get stuff to whine and those who do get it but need ego stroking to get their egos stroked.

That is all.

well, that and this:

Aliantha • Jan 18, 2009 11:06 pm
Nope, that's not what it's about.

If you want to take a negative perspective on it I suppose you could start doing some whining, but I don't see anyone here whining.
monster • Jan 18, 2009 11:09 pm
I was whining..... :D
Aliantha • Jan 18, 2009 11:10 pm

Sundae • Jan 19, 2009 8:29 am
I'm not fringe, because I'm here too much and make sure everyone knows every detail of my life.

But I'm not cool either. I was edgy once, but only because I was young and thin. You can't be fat and edgy, you end up looking Special Needs instead. Unless you're obscenely rich, then all the poor thin people think you're just obscene.

I am a National Treasure.
Griff • Jan 19, 2009 8:40 am
I've been around a long time but kind of drifted to the fringe since I haven't connected with the newer high volume posters.

That clip from Muriel's Wedding was very weird to watch. I don't even know her name, but that actress (the main one with the white sunglasses) was in Six Feet Under, in a role about as polar opposite from that clip as you could get.
Happy Monkey • Jan 19, 2009 12:38 pm
Polar opposite to the 'Waterloo' segment, but I could see Brenda giving the initial speech.
Cicero • Jan 19, 2009 2:49 pm
After awhile I really can't think of a good response to this.

It's just....silly..I don't know Ali..lol

I don't spend time thinking about being popular, on the fringe, or ignored....I'm just happy if people aren't being dicks.

I miss a couple days and come back to find a thread bringing up the old "cool kids" idea?:lame:
Aliantha • Jan 19, 2009 6:05 pm
I was reading a book which had a group of people in it called 'the fringe dwellers' which is where I got the idea for this thread.

The concept of the 'cool kids' is a fucking joke for those of you who don't seem to get it or can't get over yourselves. lol Plenty of other people seem to see the humour in it. If you take offense maybe you think you're a cool kid but don't want anyone to know you think you're cool or don't like what being a cool kid might imply. If you don't think there are cool kids, why would you care if someone says anything about it?

Do you seriously think that anyone here is 'cool'?
TheMercenary • Jan 19, 2009 6:09 pm

In defense of Merc, I have to say he has been very kind to me over the last bit of a while and I have a lot of respect for him. I don't happen to agree with some of his ideas and find some of his crap posts incredibly annoying, but he's been a good person to me personally and that means a lot to me.

I still don't think he's hot though...or cool. lol I just think he's misunderstood.

Hey, HP, if you don't have new material on your own site, you really should come back to entertain us over here... :D

If you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Off of the strip

In the outskirts
In the fringes
In the corner
Out of the grip

When they ask me
"What are
you looking
at?"
I always answer
"Nothing
much" (not much)
I think they know that
I'm looking at them
I think they think
I must be out of touch

But I'm only
In the outskirts
And in the fringes
On the edge
And off the avenue
And if you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Wondering about you

--Suzanne Vega

Eh, my 3 year old niece told me this weekend (after laughing her head off) "you'we we-awd."

I said "Well duh...if you're not a little weird, you're boring."

And, she gets that! She's hilarious.

Anyway, I am both outside and inside...like most of us I think. I know when you start feeling outside you can let your brain gnaw away at your psyche. It's just the normal flow and ebb of humankind, methinks.

You know that thing where all of your ambition and creativity are gone, and nothing brings you any particular joy, and you have no attention span, and every day feels like an unrewarding string of pointless events? That's what I've had for the past few months. I kinda know why, but the detectable causes seem unequal to the effect. Blah.

I've experienced this kind joy-drought before, but it usually lasts only a few days, and then I snap out of it and get back to writing and drawing and et cetera... but my brain has been a dustbowl since last September or so.

So... how have all of you been? *cough*

Nah... I'd consider it if I was mystified as to the cause, but in this case I am largely aware of reasons for my lack of happiness. For all practical purposes, I know how to fix it, but it would be a major undertaking. I just haven't yet reached that tipping point where the unpleasantness is sufficient to incite action.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not miserable. I just have a major case of the Blahs. Thanks for the concern though... I can always count on a fellow foodstuff.

How are things with you, Pie?

Busy. We just moved into our new house in Maryland. We're settling into our new jobs. We'll be back up in NJ this Saturday to pack up what's left in our townhouse, then sprint back to MD, hopefully beating the moving truck on the way back.
