Afghans

Maybe not as fun as Afghanistan but hey, a lot more warm and fuzzy.

But these afghans are warmer and fuzzier. :)

Juniper - 35 cents???? How old is that book?

Based on the windowpane design, I'd guess early to mid 1970s. (the red, white, and blue afghan may have been a specialty one for the Bicentennial, so say 1976 at the latest).

I was totally hoping that someone else was admitting to being a hooker.

I really like that diamond pattern one. Now I want to learn to make it.

I tried to find a photo of an afghan I had actually made, but I couldn't. I made a pink granny square afghan for my daughter last year - surely I took a photo of it? I'd take one now but it's crumpled up and covered with cat hair.

Anyway, dunno about that book, I just googled to find an image. I used to crochet all the time when my daughter was in gymnastics, because meets took forever. Now she's in cheer. The meets still take forever but I'm never sitting in one place for as long a time.

I really like the other kind of afghans, too. :D SO warm and fuzzy.

AHA -- I dug up this one. I don't have it anymore, I made it to sell at a fundraiser for the gymnastics team.

I like them but they take f-o-r-e-v-e-r because they're single crochet (at least the ones I do are ... yours looks like it might be based on a double, but it's hard to tell from the photo.)

I try to avoid afghans that require me to stick together little bits into larger bits. This is also why I haven't tried quilting.

The only afghans I will make that require attaching parts to parts is a mile-a-minute.

This is the one that I'm using on my bed currently.

I've got a bunch of crochet books with afghans in them. Can't do crochet anymore, because the cats would not leave me alone.

If someone is actively doing crochet and would like a really nice book or two, drop me a pm. I'd have to check my books though, because I may have actually given them away recently.

I am always up for more crochet books ... but I'd have to know the titles to make sure I don't already have them ...

That was officially a scrap afghan. Then I ran out of enough scraps that worked okay together, and I had to buy enough yarn to finish it out. The dark green stripe actually has about four inches of navy blue to finish it out, because I knew that I would never be able to match the color, so I just gave up. had chosen the white as the edging color when I started it, so I intentionally bought that.

When I had enough strips to finish it, I laid them out on my dining room table and kept moving them around until I found a color pattern that I could live with. I'm quite happy with how it came out, as well!

(Still looking for the windowpane afghan. I KNOW I've seen it somewhere, may even have a book with it in, but I haven't seen most of the craft books since the move. Yes, I did move more than a year ago. I have a lot of books, even after walking away from at least 1/3 of them. This is similar as far as bright colors in squares, but it is based on a granny pattern.

I really don't know how to crochet or knit...I tried knitting for a little while, but was a little frustrated with it. Crocheting seems like it would be easier, though. I want to learn!

There are only about 5 stitches that you really have to learn, everything else you do is based off that.

I'll check at home to see if I have the links saved to a good how to site ... I don't know how successful I'd be trying to tell people what to do just in text. There are some good sites with videos.
