Wordle

At wordle you can create a word cloud. What's a word cloud? The graphic below is an example. I took the text of the Declaration of Independence and pasted into wordle. It created the graphic.

There doesn't seem to be a good way to save the image. I just took a screen shot and clipped it.

This one uses the Cellar rules as the source and a different layout.
TheMercenary • Jan 10, 2009 5:51 am
Those are very cool. Thanks for the link.
richlevy • Jan 11, 2009 10:47 am
Really nice. I created one by mixing the Constitution and Declaration. There are a lot of features to vary font, remove common words (and, the), alter placement, etc.
classicman • Jan 11, 2009 10:01 pm
That is awesome. I have a great idea for that. (secret)
sweetwater • Jan 12, 2009 10:05 am
Gratis tibi for the link. I used it to make a birthday card for a musician friend by taking the lyrics to one of his CDs and making a wordle card for him. It came out much better than if I had tried to do it.

Couldn't figure out how the hell to post the pic, but here is a link to mine. It is of the opening scene from The Godfather...my favorite movie.

I love this.

Jabberwocky:
Scriveyn • Jan 14, 2009 9:20 am
How about making a game of it?

Can you guess/find out the title and author of the poem?
Shawnee123 • Jan 14, 2009 9:22 am
Great idea. Song lyrics and artists would work too!

No idea what yours is.
dar512 • Jan 14, 2009 10:26 am
@Scrivyn -- I was able to find it by searching on "poem celia bark groves". I won't give the answer here in case some of our more literate dwellars can come up with it off the top of their heads.
dar512 • Jan 14, 2009 10:27 am
@Shawnee -- the Jabberwocky was a great idea. I've saved it.
Shawnee123 • Jan 14, 2009 10:28 am
Scri/dar: Is it like a Wordsworth or Keats or the like?

Thanks Dar...I thought the interesting words would look neat. Would make a great poster!
Scriveyn • Jan 14, 2009 10:55 am
It is British and obviously a few centuries old, but a little known poet. His first name is Thomas - "Celia" is a dead giveaway :D
Shawnee123 • Jan 14, 2009 11:22 am
Much earlier than the romantic poets. I was not familiar with him. I stole Dar's google string to find it.

A post from the politics forum.
dar512 • Jan 14, 2009 12:17 pm
I think I liked the Jabberwocky better.
glatt • Jan 14, 2009 12:40 pm
OK, It was meant as a way to show that words that we think are very common here are not actually all that common.

Here's a fun one.
Shawnee123 • Jan 14, 2009 12:40 pm
Guess song/artist (easy)
sweetwater • Jan 14, 2009 12:49 pm
I'm loving these! Hallmark won't, because I will never buy another card from them again. HP will, because I will be buying a lot of color ink for the printer. :)
glatt • Jan 14, 2009 12:53 pm
If you put a tilda ~ between words, the program will keep those words together as a phrase. So I~love~you can stay together instead of dropping the "I" and the "you."

Save it to a gallery and post the link here. “3/4 Time Signature” by Flint from The Cellar.
Undertoad • Jan 14, 2009 2:19 pm
Guess the lyric.

#1 Difficulty: 3/10
Image

#2: Difficulty: 5/10
Image

#3: Difficulty: 10/10
Image
glatt • Jan 14, 2009 2:22 pm
#1 is Beatles Revolution, which is interesting because I couldn't find the word "revolution" in there at first to confirm my suspicion.
glatt • Jan 14, 2009 2:23 pm
#2 is that BananaRama song (I think that was their name.) "I'm your Venus. I'm your fire."
dar512 • Jan 14, 2009 2:24 pm
Second one's "I'm Your Venus" by Shocking Blue. I know Bananarama did a cover, but it was not worthy.
Undertoad • Jan 14, 2009 2:24 pm
correct correct

Good point Flint. I had forgotten about that because the first couple I did, I made from personal texts -- and didn't want it published.
dar512 • Jan 14, 2009 2:27 pm
And the first is the Beatles Revolution.
glatt • Jan 14, 2009 2:29 pm
I don't know #3, but it reminds me of this song. Can you guess it? Difficulty 1/10
dar512 • Jan 14, 2009 2:30 pm
Um. Is it "shout"?
dar512 • Jan 14, 2009 2:32 pm
I thought #3 might be "she loves you" from the size of the 'yeah' - size indicating the number of word uses. But that's not it.
dar512 • Jan 14, 2009 2:33 pm
ooh glatt snuck in there while I was checking my work.

Yes!
glatt • Jan 14, 2009 2:38 pm
I know #3 now, but I cheated. If you click on the link, you are cheating too.
Undertoad • Jan 14, 2009 2:42 pm
Tiny hint: where he goes "Yeah yeah yeah yeah ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-yeah!" I wrote that as 11 yeahs for wordle.
Shawnee123 • Jan 14, 2009 2:57 pm
Neato how you can make the image convey the song style.
Shawnee123 • Jan 14, 2009 4:41 pm

Yes. What gave it away? Biggles? Cornwall?

Undertoad;522774 wrote:

Yes. It deleted "will" as a common English word. What gave it away? Lotus-land?
By the way, none of the dudes in Vancouver I used to talk to at my old job had ever heard of it being called that.

Elspode;522891 wrote:

Of course. Because you have ears, and you've heard it. I have a copy (bought it from my wife, who worked at a music shop when I met her) with both sides, a live version, and interviews talking about the making of. Apparently they would work all day on one of these odd-ball sections, get it down on tape, and then move on to the next bit of madness.
Undertoad • Jan 16, 2009 6:58 pm
Actually it was "preordained" that gave it away. It was fun - at first look I figured I didn't know it. Then I thought maybe if I concentrated on "choose" I could get somewhere. Since it's so big, like "yeah" in Devo's "Uncontrollable Urge". When "choose" didn't get me anywhere, I started concentrating on the more interesting words, and that's when it sunk in.
