What goes “without saying?”
People always say that something goes without saying, but how often is that really the case?
Is there anything, anything at all, that you can think of that actually goes without saying?
There are some things that go without saying, so I'm not going to say them.
That you may not have someone to peel the hard boiled eggs for you does not go without saying.
Saying "Thank you" when someone steps out of your way or holds the door open for you goes without saying. Although I admit this is experience rather than hard fact.

Generally very obvious or very gross and embarrassing things go without saying. Or more accurately, obvious things "go without saying" while gross and embarrassing things are "better left unsaid".
For instance if someone asks you to pass the maple syrup at the breakfast table, he really wouldn't have to tell you he means to use it on his pancakes. You'd probably guess that if you saw a stack of pancakes in front of him. It would go without saying.
If he intended to give himself a maple syrup enema, it would be better left unsaid.
