I need IDEAS, please!!!

Treasenuak • Nov 25, 2008 9:37 am
Okay... so Ted (my boyfriend/housemate) is turning 41 on December 10th. Arwen, William, and I all want to have a party for him... but we're not sure how to go about it/what to do, etc, as none of us have thrown a party of ANY kind before, let alone a birthday party (other than my one year old daughter's). So... suggestions? Ted hasn't had a birthday party since he was a kid. We'd like to make this one extra special. Ted's involved with the Society for Creative Anachronism, is a computer geek and loves Star Trek and Babylon 5 and Star Wars, is an AMAZING chef, and is a wonderful dancer and fencer.

So if anyone has any ideas or clues on how to go about this or what to do, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you!!

Well, to start with, maybe you should have some good food, some music, and a variety of beverages. And invite all his friends over. As a 41 year old myself, that's what I'd like in a party.
Treasenuak • Nov 25, 2008 9:53 am
-laughs- Well, we'd figured on teh food, music, and beverages. As for friends, though... Ted doesn't have too many of those in THIS area, other than Arwen and William and myself. His friend since first grade lives in Atlanta and can't make it out this way for his birthday... and all the rest of his family and friends are equally far away. So... :( on a lot of friends coming over.

His interests are begging for some kind of themed party...

Depending on which flavour of Star Trek he prefers...there are some Star Trek cookbooks available (yes, I did own one...no, I didn't buy it myself). There's a Neelix cookbook that manages to mimic some of the Klingon dishes quite well...there're a lot of cool of cool sounding drinks mentioned in star trek...

Or be creatively anachronistic in your drinks and food choices *grins*

I forgot decorations. A string or two of tiki lights going across the room will help change the feeling of whatever room you are using.
Treasenuak • Nov 25, 2008 9:55 am
Hmmm.... Not a bad idea. I think he prefers Next Gen, and Klingon dishes for dinner would be FUN!! (considering I've got two AMAZING cooks involved here!)
Cicero • Nov 25, 2008 11:59 am
Yep themed party. Also have a list of games to play as geeks like to play games on the majority. I know I do......Keep it moving with games. I have a list of party games if you ever want to hear them.

I also bet you could find a star trek based game out there somewhere.
TheMercenary • Nov 25, 2008 12:06 pm
How about a star trek costume party with adult prizes for the best costumes.
Shawnee123 • Nov 25, 2008 12:15 pm
Adult prizes? Like Tribble Dildos? ;)
Cicero • Nov 25, 2008 12:18 pm
No, the birthday boy has the best costume no matter what mmm'kay?

Themed party idea is great, but give the birthday boy his kudos, right.

It's best to have games that exercise his brain in a fun way.
lumberjim • Nov 25, 2008 12:45 pm
there are all kinds of hookers and strippers available on Craig's lists, I'm told.
smoothmoniker • Nov 25, 2008 1:12 pm
Why not setup a webcam, tie it to a big TV, and let the remote family and friends drop in for a few minutes at a time to join in the festivities.
Treasenuak • Nov 25, 2008 1:55 pm
SM, that is a STELLAR idea... I'll have to run that by my co-conspirators, see what we can hook up.

Shawnee... Tribble dildos? And this is why I lurve you, girl...

Cic... Party games. Not a bad idea at all. And if I twist it right, it'll give the boys a chance to pull out their swords and be all manly and such ;)

Everyone, thank you for the input! Keep it coming!

Next Generation Drinking Game
I used to play this (or one similar) every Christmas with my ex and a group of friends.
Treasenuak • Nov 25, 2008 2:19 pm
SG, I've played something remarkably similar... different TV series though. Good idea... I'll have William bring over his Star Trek series DVDs :)
Sheldonrs • Nov 25, 2008 2:38 pm
Trust me. Nothing says happy 41st birthday like male strippers that give private shows. :D
Cicero • Nov 25, 2008 2:41 pm
This thread should have come with an automatic disclaimer involving any advice from Sheldon.;)
Treasenuak • Nov 25, 2008 3:26 pm
-falls over laughing- Sheldonrs, I can just IMAGINE Ted's reaction to male strippers. He's so straight he makes an arrow look like a garage door spring. Now, if he wanted to get me male strippers for MY birthday... that's a different story all together.

What aver happened to answering the door dressed in nothing but a jeorboam of grog and a roast suckling pig?

Perhaps I'm terribly old fashioned.

Steak and BJ
sugarpop • Nov 25, 2008 9:51 pm
For my 40th b-day, I went to Disneyland with a few good friends. We had great fun. Willow and I sang the "small world" song over and over and drove everyone else mad. :D Of course, I lived in LA at the time, so it wasn't that far away.

If he's into Star Trek, maybe you could dress up like a Klingon female and perform the Klingon mating ritual. :D

Steak and BJ Day is March 14th.
Sundae • Nov 26, 2008 8:02 pm
I wonder if there's a Steak and a BJ Swap Meet anywhere?
I'd be happy to provide both if there was an interested taker.
Aliantha • Nov 26, 2008 8:07 pm
geeks like to play games

I've been wondering why every baby shower and wedding shower and hens night are filled with stupid games that bore the shit outta me. I come from a family of geeks, but I'm the black sheep. :)
monster • Nov 26, 2008 9:16 pm
Those aren't really games. I mean, did anyone ever play 3rd Reich at a baby shower? (Well apart from us....)
Aliantha • Nov 26, 2008 9:19 pm
Well if they throw me a baby shower (which I suspect they will because several of them owe me parties), there'd better not be any dumb 'activities'. Just lots of cakes and sweets will do me. I think they know where I stand on these issues.
Sundae • Nov 26, 2008 9:45 pm
I love games, especially word games.
A couple of years ago I was lucky to fall into a team of people who felt exactly the same way I did. When we got together socially, non-team members were a bit weirded out, but the funny thing was, the ones who protested the most were the ones who said at the end of the night, "I've had the best night ever!"

We'd play them down the pub, when we were at eachother's houses for dinner, and even stone cold sober at work when all the systems went down (we went through an upgrade where it happened regularly).

We made up endless ones of our own, and I still play some of them today. Except all on my own. Which isn't as much fun. Still, it was a crappy job and not very well paid, so I can take the loss of the games.

Mazola party!
Stress Puppy • Nov 29, 2008 7:39 pm
Also I'd like to put my recommendation in for Catch Phrase and all of the Munchkin games.
Treasenuak • Nov 29, 2008 10:34 pm
What's Mazola, Monster?? And I know Ted LOOOOVES Munchkin, being one of those lovely D&D DM's who doesn't take himself or his game too seriously :D

Seems as though we might not be throwing the hoped-for BASH, although there will be a little bitty party going on. -sighs- Everyone's going to be out of town at one point or another throughout the month. Bummer.
