extreme temperature poll
would you prefer to live in a place like Alaska, where it's deadly cold 10 months out of the year, and you can die from exposure in minutes, or a place like..say...southern Australia where you can shrivel up and evaporate in mere moments?

North, baby. I darn near melt in the Philadelphia summers.
I do better in the dark and cold, and have always wanted a coat and mukluks made out of baby seal fur. And I groove on that Alaska Carry.
North for me, and I do live in a place were you can evaporate in minutes in the summer, like 100 miles from Death Valley.

Central and northern Australia are the real killer zones, the south is not so bad.
I love being outdoors, and with my very thin frame I handle heat much better than cold, and by avoiding outdoor physical activity from 11 am to 3 pm, summers can be quite enjoyable. I especially like hiking on moonlit summer nights when the temp is still in the high twenties (centigrade, you figure it out).
I'm going to wait & see where most of the women are going; then, I'm going there. Hot or cold, I won't suffer too much.
My vote would be both or either if there was an option for it.
Most of my life has been spent in colder temps but with my recent trips to tropical territory I've discovered a very handy item for hot weather survival; the hydration pack.

This backpack is bulky and somewhat heavy filled but the insulation keeps the liquid from getting too warm.
Adding the alcohol of your choice to the mix may also assist your hot weather outdoor activities.
Also note that this item should not be used while playing basketball. :D
Colder is generally better for me, but my present habitat is close to ideal. 17 °F right here right now. That is actually a little nippy for me.:eek:
I think probably cold...I feel more able to cope with cold weather, as you can add layers (appropriate clothing) to combat it...if it's too hot, you can only remove so many layers...

I don't think I would survive anywhere with extreme temperatures very well, especially not as the cold is dark in Alaska. But if I had to choose I'd go North. I haven't voted as I haven't been given a reasonable explanation of why you expect me to uproot myself.
OMG. Im so amazed that so many want to live in a cold climate. I like it hot and can get a lot more done in the heat than in the cold.
North. I hate these sweltering Ohio summers which are so hot and humid you are as confined to the indoors as if there were 10 feet of snow and ice outside. At least with snow and ice you can pretend to do something about it...with the rotten, crazy heat you can either live in water or in front of the A/C. My particular peeve is getting out of a nice shower in the summer, and, before you can take two steps, you're sweating. UGH.
I like actual weather. Four seasons. Roughly three months each. None of this 'November, December, January and Summer' crap. That means snow in the winter, hot in the summer, in between in spring and fall (Favorite seasons).
I'd hate to live in a cold climate, but in saying that, I think it's what you're brought up with which really affects how you feel about climate.
Having been brought up in northern Australia where the heat and humidity can be quite extreme, and it rarely gets below 20 degrees celcius during the day, even during winter, I have to say that I really don't enjoy the cracked and dry skin, sore red nose, lingering coughs and colds and frozen toes I've suffered during my few brief stints to colder climates.
Having said that, in my current condition, I'm not enjoying the heat so much and have been giving the aircon a bit of a work out.

I'd go for the cold. I can cover up with clothing to stay warm, but even being naked won't help against the heat. Plus there is the added bonus of finding ways to stay warm with someone, if you know what I mean. ;)

I'm a defective Indian. I hate the heat.
The wife unit is from Maine. We loved it up there in the summer and spring. Absolutely beautiful. To bad winter is like 9 months out of the year. After being stationed in Hawaii for 3 years we vowed never to live where we would see snow again. Nice place to visit, never to live there.
HOTTER IS BETTER!!! Because then I can walk around the house naked 24/7... and outside too, with a fenced yard :D

Hot. I'm with Treas -- the less clothes, the better.
I also tend to lose weight when it's hot and gain when it's cold. Not pretty at all.
Which reminds me -- time to build me a nice warm fire! Brrrrrr! What the hell am I doing in Ohio?

That was true when we lived in the arctic north but now that we've been in the desert for 10 years mrs L switches into the heavy flannel and barbwire PJ's when it dips below 60.
i've lived both extremes.
48 celcius..... it was like you were in a fan oven cause there was a lot of very hot wind... quite a few people died that day. it was hell
how about -60... i worked mostly outdoors that night, talk about a free face-lift.
even in death, heat is torture, while if you're to die from the cold, you'd sleep before your death making it quite peace-full.

I'm currently amazing the shopkeepers when I pop in about 21.00 and am in a simple top (everyone else has coats, scarves, gloves). I've been aske din a variety of accents, "Aren't you cold?" Nope! I love it!
Athough the man in the mini-mart that sells Oyster cards and fresh bread knows me now, and grins and says, "Lovely weather today!" if it's frosty. Then again, he always checks to see if I want a third of a bottle of vodka too, No, mate - it's 09.15 and it's a weekday, try again at the weekend,

hear hear. And it depends on the kind of heat or cold. Dry heat is much different than wet heat. I can't stand summers in Savannah, but I love summers in LA.
I really enjoy both hot weather and cold weather, but I wouldn't want 8 months of either, and once it gets above (or below) a certain temperature, I am not happy.
