November 2, 2008: Olde Chocolate

Very Olde Chocolate... like 106 years old chocolate.

Hailing from Scottish town St Andrews, they were made especially to mark the Coronation of King Edward VII - the successor to Queen Victoria - and come in a decorated tin announcing Coronation Day on June 26, 1902.
And they have lasted considerably longer than the king's reign, which ended with his death in 1910.
Alongside the chocolates is an old newspaper cutting dating back to their 50th

It explains that the sweets were presented to schoolgirl Martha Greig in August, 1902.
She mustered up the willpower to avoid eating the chocolates, instead keeping them as a souvenir.
When she grew up, she handed the box down to one of her children, who in turn gave it to her own daughter, Freida McIntosh.

Ms McIntosh also resisted temptation and and has now passed the confectionery into the safe hands of the St Andrews Preservation Trust, which aims to maintain the character and history of the town.

I'm surprised that they didn't attract bugs...I guess the metal kept the scent in?

I wonder if her kids ate a couple of the chocolates and replaced them with stones.

I have a chocolate souvenir-type item sitting in my freezer, but it's only about 6 years old at this point. It was a silly marketing piece for a very big-budget videogame that failed miserably, which was a major reason for the company's spectacular bankruptcy filing shortly afterwards. I've kept it as a humorous symbol of everything that was mismanaged about the game and the company... But there's been no temptation to eat it for a looong time already.

We froze the top of our wedding cake and ate it last week on our anniversary. Surprisingly, it wasn't that bad.

That's a long tradition, Cloud, you've never heard of it? You're supposed to freeze a piece of wedding cake and eat it on your first anniversary. We didn't, but I know lots of people who did.

yeah, yeah--not that. the chocolate.

I've always thought that if things like chocolate looked like it does when you pass it through, fewer people would eat too much of it.

We ate the top slice of our wedding cake at the nameing ("christening") of our first child.
That's 4 1/2 years, no refrigeration ;) , just kept in a tin in a dry cupboard.
(old school fruit cake, loaded with alcohol :thumb: )

(may not have been the top slice as the rest were chocolate and not strong enough to support the weight :D )

dude, that's such a ghey thing to say... and it wasn't yummy imo -fruitcake sucks. But it was edible and probably better than when we got married if you like fruitcake, because of the alcohol. it did get eaten, so maybe some don't share my opinion.

British Fruitcake is somewhat different from merkin stuff, and is the tradition for wedding cakes.

BTW, we had one chocolate layer (because I hate fruit cake) and that was the top one (because it can't be weight-bearing), so we saved the second layer rather than the first.

and lose the "christening" thing (and the naming thing). Fess Up that we just had a party so we could get rid of the cake......
