Packs of robots to hunt uncooperative humans

The full story is from New Scientist. Edited highlights follow:

The Pentagon are looking for contractors to provide a "Multi-Robot Pursuit System" that will let packs of robots "search for and detect a non-cooperative human".

SNIP

Given that iRobot last year struck a deal with Taser International to mount stun weapons on its military robots, how long before we see packs of droids hunting down pesky demonstrators with paralysing weapons? Or could the packs even be lethally armed?

[Expert interview]
"What we have here are the beginnings of something designed to enable robots to hunt down humans like a pack of dogs. Once the software is perfected we can reasonably anticipate that they will become autonomous and become armed.
..We can also expect such systems to be equipped with human detection and tracking devices including sensors which detect human breath and the radio waves associated with a human heart beat. These are technologies already developed."

I do NOT approve. :headshake

We've banned many weapons before. We should ban this now.

Excellent idea.
If you're not uncooperative, you won't be hunted by robots. Seems fair enough to me.
Shawnee123 • Oct 23, 2008 10:56 am
Robots have never been proven to be a deterrent. A person committing a crime of passion, for instance, does not stop to think "hey, I better not stab my husband 16 times, those freaking robots will find me. CRAP."
Cicero • Oct 23, 2008 11:02 am
Well now I have to figure out how to kill robots first. Fuck. Where are my huge freaking magnets? :) Then I will be cited for the destruction of government property at 2 mil. instead of the lowly 20,000....Oh this does throw a "wrench" in things. lol!

Do they have a chip for passive aggressive humans yet? How to sniff one out that is? I might be safe, for awhile...

Oh and all that AI stuff science fiction has been trying to warn us about...it's here. Have you guys met HAL?

Practicing:

Stay back robots! I have huge magnets and will destroy your processor and any monitor you may have. Stay back! I have a garden hose! I have paint and will spray it all over your lenses!

Oh and stay away from my puppy too or I'll get really mad. Let vehicles that have done this be an example!:D

robots. pfft! Big deal.

You just carry a super-soaker filled with salt water. Kills them every time.

Heh.....Made in China? Heh.. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/06/open_source_malware_future_combat_systems_robot_hack_war/

Why am I being arrested by a robot that speaks Mandarin? Damn. Damn. :)
SamIam • Oct 23, 2008 11:50 am
Really! All the best robots speak cantonese. ;)
Shawnee123 • Oct 23, 2008 12:02 pm
Next thing you know, robots will get "the vote."

We need tough legislation.
Cicero • Oct 23, 2008 12:09 pm
Well I think this thread should not give these people any ideas on how to design it. Seeing how it isn't complete....

1. Impervious to salt water.
2. Impervious to magnets.
3. Impervious to paint on lenses. (wipers)
4. Obtain the vote.

They should start paying up. All checks can be made to "cellar think tank unillimited". :)
Pie • Oct 23, 2008 12:51 pm
I for one welcome our new robotic overlords.

I bwaaahaaahaaa'd on # 3. Wipers. You kill me!:p

It's ok. They'll be recalled within 6 months when the lead paint starts poisoning all the engineers.
Cicero • Oct 23, 2008 3:01 pm
I'd pipe down Dana, I heard they were supposed to attack pinko socialists first. ;)
TheMercenary • Oct 23, 2008 3:20 pm
Great idea. Unleash the robots. :lol2:
Pie • Oct 23, 2008 3:21 pm
Makes me think of this:
Pico and ME • Oct 23, 2008 3:22 pm
I know a few 'uncooperative humans' I would like to sic them on.
TheMercenary • Oct 23, 2008 3:27 pm
I kung fu you! Ha!

Why do I keep getting the idea that someone, somewhere thinks that all this science fiction shit that was bad when it was in literature would be good if they brought it to reality?
TheMercenary • Oct 25, 2008 12:39 am
Much of it is good and much of it will be good.
Elspode • Oct 25, 2008 12:46 am
Uncooperative humans being hunted by robots is good...how?

Start by telling me who gets to decide who's uncooperative, and what activities comprise a lack of cooperation, please.
Cicero • Oct 25, 2008 1:03 am
Well..You right now would be a good example...too many questions..ZAP! Anything and anyone, inferior to robots, is uncooperative.

That technology is currently being implemented in public monitors (cameras). The technology is based in things such as microexpressions, how a person stands (ie monitor the knees), etc.

Before taking action, first the bot must make a decision. Same technology being used in public monitoring to identify terrorists or other criminal types.
Sundae • Oct 25, 2008 7:04 pm
Yup, 'bots will look for indicators of guilt.
So if you've never done anything to feel guilty for... you're fine!

On arriving at Justice World the Justice Computer scans the crews' minds for signs of guilt and convicts Rimmer on 1,167 counts of second-degree murder, a consequence of his faulty drive-plate repair that killed the crew of the mining vessel Red Dwarf. Kryten proves to the Justice computer Judge that Rimmer's immense guilt stems from his own inflated sense of importance; a man as incompetent and insignificant as Rimmer, he argues, would never be given tasks that might put the whole crew in danger. Rimmer, although deeply offended, and despite objecting to his own defence on many occasions, is found not guilty.

(see Red Dwarf series 4 episode 3, Justice)

Because then we could vanquish our enemies and take their women.
