Suggestions for replacing my stereo

So, my over 10 year old stereo (cd changer, cassette player & radio) is now fubar'd and I'm looking to replace it, but I'm not sure what the tech is out there, and not sure what to replace it with.

I don't need the cassettes anymore, but would like something to play my cds & my ipod too. Such a thing? I have some clock radio type ipod players, but they don't give big enough sound. Maybe I should upgrade to a home theater system?

I'm not an audiophile particularly, I just want something pretty basic, and not exorbitantly expensive. Ideas?

I personally would go with a basic home theater setup. It'll add a lot of oomph to those DVDs. Plus you can play your CDs and, with the right adapter cable, your ipod.

I will look into it, thanks.

ETA: I see Amazon has a handy home-theater guide. will research!

CNET.com is usually a pretty good research tool for things of the electronics variety. Newegg.com and tigerdirect.com are my favorite online retailers, almost always have the best prices and are constantly doing specials.

I suggest putting all your cd's on your ipod and buying a Bose dock for around $300. There's a Samsung Dock that has a built in cd player that's worth checking out, but I seriously doubt the sound quality is as good as the Bose.

I did research on things that were 3-5 years old and bought everything on the Bay. Put together a excellent surround system for maybe a third of what a new one would go for, and still very high in quality.

I already have two similar things; one for beside my bed, and one for work. I'm looking for something that can play my cds (still, despite my 3 ipods), and produce a bigger sound.

I like the idea of a home theater systems, so I'll probably go with a HTIB thing.
