OBX 2008

lumberjim • Sep 13, 2008 6:26 pm
OK!...we've been here for 1:20, and I'm on my 3rd Yuengling Lager. I've discovered that they have a free WAN. Excellent.
I'm ready to beat the kids already, and have already languished briefly in the pool after working up a quick sweat unloading the Jeep. All clean and showered, and rarin to go.

this first day of vacation is always the best. that dreaded check out day is far enough away that i aint skeered of it.....the 8 hour ride down is behind us....I have food, beer and other distractions.

we'll be doing a video tour for y'all and some pics of this and that. I'll have more time to stir up the cellar this week, so be warned.

seriously...i have some axes to grind.

just kidding......no really.

Jinx has arranged for all tropical bad weather to divert to the Gulf of Mexico for the next week.

Yeah, she can do that. ;)

Look fantastic guys, have fun!
Sundae • Sep 14, 2008 7:28 am
Wow - looks amazing. Here's to long long sunny days for you.

Brings back memories of our beach holidays. Except we stayed in a tiny caravan. Oh and all but one of them were during record weeks of rain. Still, the memories of that one magical week stay with me!
It was proper serendipity - Mum & Dad had booked into a tiny caravan park because they just couldn't afford anything else that year. The facilities on site were... A Games Room. Which was a musty lean-to with a Pac Man and a Space Invaders. The nearest shop and playground were half a mile down the road. BUT it was right on a glorious, sandy and empty beach. That particular week it was sunshine from sun-up to sundown and we ran and dug and chased and paddled to our heart's content, and only occasionally whined for ice-creams. Magic.

The next year we were back at the all singing all dancing camp and it pissed down as usual!

Take lots of pics and have a fantastic time.
Chocolatl • Sep 14, 2008 7:57 am
Gorgeous pictures, so far. Hope you all have a great time!
Cicero • Sep 14, 2008 6:16 pm
Ok where are they? I still don't know. For a minute it looked like they were in a time share of my parents, which scared the hell out of me, but I'm over it.

Nice moon.....veeery pretty.

Say would you guys like a puppy to go with all that fun?

*blink* *blink*
xoxoxoBruce • Sep 14, 2008 6:40 pm
They're at OBX.
jinx • Sep 14, 2008 9:21 pm
Yeah, the view and the weather are gorgeous. I've never seen the beach as crowded as it was today. The horses didn't seem to mind.

...but i appreciate the sentiment.......now.....when you're watching the next video I put up, (in which I appear topless, and jinx is seen running with a bikini on....) i want to know how THAT makes you feel!

You guys ever watch the show Jon & Kate Plus Eight? They had an episode on a vacation they took out at OBX, and that house looks exactly like the one they stayed in. But like you said, maybe they all look the same.
DucksNuts • Sep 16, 2008 9:33 pm

Jinx - what were you holding when you were running?
jinx • Sep 16, 2008 11:16 pm
Just my ipod and tangled earbuds Ducks.

Rainy day today so we drove like 90 miles down the islands to see and climb the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, passing the Bodie Island lighthouse (and also the Currituck because we're about 12 miles north of it) along the way.

Anyway

They are wild Ducks, descended from shipwreck survivors. There used to be thousands the whole length of the barrier island chain. Here's some more info.

I only knew because we have friends who moved to Jersey for a while. It's a popular summer destination if you live out that way.

Damnit Jimbo. I've got Premiere and Soundforge on this machine, and you're making me want to dust them off. Something ephemeral about the oceanside, even if you're there for awhile. And you're capturing that fleeting feeling quite well with that one. Well done.

Let me guess. You took those pictures and posted so you could write the whole trip off as a business expense. "But sir, it was all a viral marketing tactic. Since gas went over 3 bucks a gallon, we got five %$%@ thousand SUV's on the lot."

BTW, this does explain how someone as hot as Jinx picked you. She gets to drive any cool car she wants as long as it has demo miles on it already.:D

"Ocean Size"

Wish I was ocean size
They cannot move you
No one tries
No one pulls you
Out from your hole
Like a tooth aching a jawbone...

I was made with a heart of stone
To be broken
With one hard blow
I've seen the ocean
Break on the shore
Come together with no harm done...

It ain't easy living...

I want to be
As deep
As the ocean
Mother ocean

Some people tell me
Home is in the sky
In the sky lives a spy
I want to be more like the ocean
No talking
All action...
No talking
All action...

So..this means you only get to drive the trade-ins?;)

Beautiful pictures of the horses. If I could have seen the phone number on that 'FOR SALE' sign, I might have been tempted to pick up the phone.

He only gets to take new cars in demo service... I did drive every Jeep he ever brought home when he worked there, but the Nissans that he drives now (for low gas milage) are mostly boring.

I went to the website and then started playing with mls searches, lol... ($800K - 1.5mil for what I'd like to have...)
LabRat • Sep 24, 2008 12:29 pm
I just learned the location of Rodanthe, from the film Nights In Rodanthe (a movie I am dying to see, call me a sap), is in the outer banks of North Carolina. Now I want to see it even more, assuming it was actually filmed on lacation there.

Sweet.

How did you guys end up vacationing there?
jinx • Sep 24, 2008 1:10 pm
We had a few miserable vacations staying in hotel rooms at NJ and MD beaches, and then were invited by to OBX by a friend of my sister. We went as 3 families in 1 giant house twice and had a great time. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to go with us the past 2 times due to schedules/babies, but we enjoy it just as much or more on our own.

They did film the movie in Rodanthe, which we drove thru on our way to the Hatteras Light, but it's way south of where we stay up in Carova (north of Corolla) where the horses are and the roads aren't.

Image

I'm bummed that we didn't get a chance to check out Roanoke Island, definitely on the agenda for next year.

*The white squiggle on the horse's back is a common marking, Some horses have a lot of them, looks pretty cool.

Beachcomber stumbles upon historical shipwreck

(couple of cool pictures at the link)
The wreckage, hidden under the sand for centuries, became fully exposed after a winter of brutal Nor'easters, making it the oldest shipwreck found off the coast of North Carolina.
But historians had to act fast to recover the ship, according to Meghan Agresto, site manager of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
"This winter, it just got smacked. After awhile the ocean was going to take it back," Agresto said. "The fact that we got it off the beach makes us excited because we got to save it."
Midgett and other beachcombers had discovered a number of relics near the shipwreck's beach grave site, including coins believed to be from the reign of Louis XIII in France and Charles I in England, lead bale seals used for identification, and spoons dating to the mid-1600s.
