2-hour outage today

Undertoad • Aug 18, 2008 12:54 pm
Apparently the switch that I have in place might be acting up. The ISP says the router port for the server shut down, which it can do automatically if it detects a lot of errors. This may just be a loose connection but it's also possible it's the switch. The good news is that I have a replacement ready in case this happens again. The bad news is that the ISP is an hour away. Hopefully it's nothing.

I, too, hope for nothing.
lookout123 • Aug 18, 2008 1:24 pm
funny, my hope usually amounts to nothing.

if it happens again......meet up at the lumbernets!

The outage just happened again. I will be driving down there and replacing the switch this afternoon.

Ain't it the trute?

UT is a god amongst mere virtual mortals.

In other words, he gets to do the shopping, cooking and wash the dishes. ;)

Update: switch not needed to be replaced. Tech needed to be replaced. They were doing troubleshooting and messed up our settings. The errors that the router was showing were fixed by reseating ethernet cables. Everything looks good for now.
ZenGum • Aug 20, 2008 1:58 am
Did you have to drive two hours to deal with that? Grrrr.....

They got initials for that too:

PEBCAK.

So sorry, UT.

I didn't have to drive down there. After they said they were troubleshooting, they suggested that it wasn't necessary to replace the switch.

BUT!!! Just now we have just had another 15 minute outage, which again happened in late morning EST, and I am waiting to hear WTF.
Undertoad • Aug 20, 2008 4:44 pm
The switch was failing. It is now replaced.

Do things seem snappier? Because they shouldn't. We were only getting 10MB and not the expected 100MB out of the old switch. But we only get 10MB to the outside world anyway, so! Doesn't matter how big the pipes are in the building, if there's only a 1" pipe to the road we'll only get 1" worth of water.
lookout123 • Aug 20, 2008 4:46 pm
stop with all this 1" talk. you're making me self conscious.
SteveDallas • Aug 20, 2008 7:55 pm
It's not the size of your pipe, it's the quality of your content.
Clodfobble • Aug 20, 2008 11:54 pm
Says you! I don't care how good the content is, if it takes too long I'm going to start staring at the ceiling.
xoxoxoBruce • Aug 21, 2008 2:31 am
It seems to be slower than it was 6 months ago, and certain times during the day I just give up and try later. I don't want to look at the ceiling, 'cause of the spiders with hairy knuckles and bloodshot eyes, up there. :mg:

So, let me understand you, you're saying you like for the process to be over & done with as quickly as possible?
Clodfobble • Aug 21, 2008 12:39 pm
Well, not as quickly as possible, but I'd agree that 10MB should be good enough for any woman. The ones demanding more are just being selfish, never thinking about the poor sysadmin.

I couldn't hit the Cellar URL all morning. Was that just me?
Shawnee123 • Aug 28, 2008 2:16 pm
I couldn't either. I thought there had been a coup, or I had been removed from the list of acceptable IP addresses.
SteveDallas • Aug 28, 2008 2:38 pm
I can't imagine a coup that would take it down. (REPLACE it with something else, absolutely.)
Griff • Aug 28, 2008 3:11 pm
I was thinking coup as well, especially when I saw this: The Cellar: Duke sells more cars than Pat! I was blaming LJ.

This morning and last night... I was getting worried. On the other hand, it did ensure a productive morning for me. Maybe we need periodic outages just to remind us how grateful we are for it. :) Thanks for fixing it UT, whatever it was...
