I really like my middle name, though. It flows with my first name perfectly.

so? that's all wel and good....

but here is your chance to select a name that really says......YOU.

do you go with your first name, ....because that's who you've always been? or have you always been bothered by the fact that your name doesn't really FIT?

Umm.....i have two middle names as it is...any more middle initials and I'll be able to play scrabble with them.

When I was 10 I wanted to be called Louisa.
I know because I have a piece of schoolwork which tells me so. And I wanted to have black curly hair.

It's a sad piece of writing actually. I couldn't understand why when my teacher read it she gave me a big hug and told me how lovely I was. Or why she edited it before I read it out at assembly (and even then my former teacher came and hugged me afterwards).

We were asked to write about who we were and what we would change. I basically identifed that I had a bad temper, I was very naughty at home and I was horrible to my brother. I wanted to change my name (because everyone pronounced it wrong) my appearance (didn't identify my eye in those days, but I know what I meant) and wanted to be kinder, nicer and less trouble. In fact I wrote that I wished I was more like my sister.

When I was 15 I wanted to change my name to Chloe. In fact when I was 17 I told a guy I met in a nightclub that that was my name, and it's what he and his friends and family called me for the 6 months we dated. Mum said that changing my name by deed poll wouldn't make me a different person - I might as well stop trying to run away from who I was and get on with things. I didn't agree, but could see it would involve a family fight if I went ahead with it. I've compromised by getting people to call me by a pet name over the years.

That said - if I had to add a name to my two, I'd have Eilonwy. Too pretentiously Welsh to have as a first name. But one of my childhood heriones (Lloyd Alexander's books). Although I'd make it my first middle name, as I think CEKO would make an easier to write set of initals than CKEO. If I ever initial anything I always write CKO as it is, CO just looks silly.

*Smiles* I suppose when we mould our own nickname we are selecting an identity. Mine was always Dani (pronounced daynee) amongst the family. I then went through a phase of Dana, which was at my own choosing. I just introduced myself as that when I went to a new job. Then a couple of mates started calling me Dani (pronounced Danni) and I rather liked that. I hated it as a kid, cause it made me sound like a boy lol. Now I mainly get called Danni, but Dana and Daynee are still current.

I did go through a very brief phase of being called Sweedy by J and the gang, many years ago but I have absolutely no recollection of the origin of that.

Since I have no middle name, maybe now would be a good time to pick one.

I've never really felt terribly connected to my middle name, despite the fact that it was from my grandfather, who was a decent guy when not schnockered. Also, my initials are PRC, which my mother always pronounced as "perk", but which clearly say "prick".

I think maybe I'll take...Arthur. Patrick Arthur Chambers rolls well off the tongue, plus, my nickname could be PacMan.

Clearly my parents should've just named me "Awesome" from the get go. If they didn't want to seem too egotistical the could've gone with a name that means awesome, but no they went with a name that means honey bee. Great so they expected me to be lazy, fat, and clumsy...damn them for being right.

I'm not being a stick in a mud. The premise is that one is assumed not to like their name, I guess. I do like my name, I've always liked my name. Christopher Jon just flows perfectly for me. My only gripes with my names are that a) everyone shortens it to Chris, and b) no one can spell or pronounce my last name. If I were to change my name at all, it would be my last name, and I don't want to do that because it would be insulting to my family.

I always wanted to change my 1st name from Sheldon to Joshua.

But if I changed just my middle name, I would make it Oscar instead of Robert. That way my initials would be SOS. :)

I love the name Oscar. I was gutted when women my age started spawning and made it trendy. I thought I was unique (sob).

I have always hated my name, and from second grade through high school went mostly by the nickname Fergie (from my maiden name Ferguson.) There were a good number of people who were honestly surprised to discover it wasn't my real name, which always sort of baffled me. Fergie Ferguson? Who in God's name would do that to a child? But when I entered the workforce I went by my real name for professionalism's sake, and then I got married and the nickname didn't make sense anymore so it never made a comeback.

My parents toyed briefly with the idea of naming me Scythia after a relative, and I always wished they had gone through with it. So I guess if we're picking from scratch I'll go with that.

My Mum used to call me Cherry BonBon, and occasionally Cherry Bakewell (which is a tart, cruelly enough!) so it was a pet name of mine even with those that chose my given name.

When I left Aylesbury, I decided to go back to my full, formal name - and endure having to explain to people how to pronounce it. But I moved in with an old school friend who only ever called me Cherry, so all her friends did too. I lived by one name at work and one name at home.

Moving to Leicester I had trouble getting my reference through (I ended up not working for a month while it was sorted) so I've kept my formal name at work since then. And the old schoolfriend I now live with, never called me Cherry because that was more of a girlie thing. So after all this time I am slowly moving away from it, which I feel is sad, as I personally identify with it far more.

In fact when I'm talking to myself, especially if I am trying to motivate myself, I use the derivation my best friend always used - Berrily. My ex used to call me that too, when I was unhappy or needed comforting.

So maybe I'll take that as my middle name instead.

My name fits me perfectly and if you read about the origins of Christopher, you'll be reading a general outline of my personality. And, to clarify, I formed this personality long before I actually knew the origins of my name. So if I were to select a name that really says, 'me', I would pick the one I already have.

Raised Catholic, we had to pick a 'new' name for confirmation. I didn't care much about the tradition so I used my twin sister's middle name and she took mine. I'd prefer to ditch all my names and use the one word name I use in most other sites, actually.

Quite appropriately for this thread, this reminds me of the most unkind nickname I have heard.

Chap I knew at Uni had been circumcised as a baby, and it had gone wrong, become infected, and required a skin graft from his thigh. Various other issues developed - growth problems, pain (which may partly explain the fact that he was somewhat of a jerk, but I digress) but also, as he aged, the skin transplanted from his thigh developed follicles and started sprouting hair.

Nickname: Bottlebrush

I knew a guy called Chris who had wall-eye (officially called Strabismus apparently - it's a wandering eye).
He was known as One-Eye, ostensibly because there's only one i in Chris. Actually because he could only ever focus one eye on you in conversation.

Quite cruel I thought. Bottlebrush is worse though.

Sweet, my confirmation name is Brigid, same as my Mum's. I actually used it as an additional name while I was still Catholic.
