I am...

After 2 years of trying.

Hooray! Fingers crossed everything goes well. Early days yet, so I'll be taking it easy after a small amount of minor 'spotting'.

I guessed that, but didn't want to bring it up while you're still in the first flush of celebration! Not to worry, life gets in the way of the best plans. I'm just glad it's because of something longed for.

thanks guys.

Went to the doc yesterday and according to her I'm about 5 weeks gone and the little bit of spotting is nothing to worry about. Good to know. Still a bit worried about it though. I suppose that's natural. Not much that can be done even if things do go down the shitter (so to speak) anyway though, so I should just stop worrying.

Oof, Ali! :headshake
Hope you really have had your mind put at rest. Semantics aside, you're quite right - nothing you can do but be sensible and let nature take its course. Despite all my feelings to the contrary, this is what we were designed for after all.
LabRat • Jul 29, 2008 2:28 pm

FWIW, before I knew I was pg, (wasn't trying) I just thought I was having a very light period. The spotting was nothing serious.

It's always fun making love, but after a while, the constant routine of making sure you're doing it at the right time of the month, then of course the frustration when you're apart and it's not possible etc. Because Dazza travels a lot with work, this was a major issue for us.

Thanks for your kind words though.

Yours to LR. I'm having a less leaky day today, so I'm hopeful that it was just the placenta forming and attaching etc which caused the bit of bleeding. Hopefully that's the end of it for now. :)

Aliantha • Aug 5, 2008 12:04 am
For the sake of clarity, I'm going to say during the birth Dazza is likely to be a blithering idiot. Probably mostly because I'm likely to be a bit rough on him during the process and he might just not know where to stand or what to say by the time the birth comes around. lol

Well you could tell him to stay out of arms reach and keep items you could throw at him out of reach as well. :lol2:
Aliantha • Aug 5, 2008 6:59 pm
Yes, I could do that. he's probably smart enough to stay out of the way anyway.

I'm almost in my 9th week now. Only a few more weeks and we'll be over 'the danger period', so that's something to look forward to. I'm not so tired now either, so that's good also although I still feel like vomiting at the drop of a hat.

So far so good.

Oh man... I don't miss that one bit... I was sick the entire tiem with our daughter. The only relief I felt... and mild at that was from ginger Altoids, sour plum drops, and the rasberry preggie pop drops.

Here is my unsolicited advice.... Oh... snow cones were good too... I highly recomend the snow cones... and sleepy or not... you might as well... once baby arrives you'll never sleep the same again... man I wish I'd slept more while I could... of course it was hard to go to sleep any earlier (I went to sleep around 7pm) considering I got off work at 6pm... still it wasn't enough.

I feel for you... I remember how scary the beginning was... we lost several pregnancies before we finally had our daughter and I couldn't relax and let myself be happy till I held her. We didn't find out about our son untill I was already 3 months along... that was the shortest pregnancy ever...
Aliantha • Aug 25, 2008 5:47 pm
Speaking of finding out late about a baby. With my second son, I was 16 weeks when I found out. He was concieved about 6 weeks after my first son was born, and i think it was mostly that during that time, I just wasn't paying much attention to myself. I wasn't feeling sick although I was tired, but when you've got a new born, who isn't tired? Finally I realized I still hadn't had my period, so there might be something wrong. I went off to the doc who had a feel of my uterus and happily informed me that I was about 4 months along. Yehaa was all I had to say to that. I don't think I'd do the same thing now, but back then I had my baby, a spouse who was a total dickhead, and working full time while trying to care for the baby. I'd come home at night and my partner would say, "I've had him all day, now it's your turn". Excellent! Then on the weekends he'd be off to the pub for most of it. I finally left him when my second son was about 12 months old and never looked back. He's still a dickhead.

Thankfully I have a wonderful husband now and he's been very supportive, which I expect will continue right through this childs life. Incidentally, my two older boys love him too. He's the best step father ever. :)
Trilby • Aug 25, 2008 9:21 pm
congrats, Ali. This is an exciting time in your life! I'd LOVE to have another baby---I think I'm more ready now than I was when I had my two sons in my early twenties. Enjoy your bundle (even tho he/she is making you puke!)
Aliantha • Aug 25, 2008 9:40 pm
Thanks Bri. No puking today. I bought some perier mineral water yesterday. I haven't had it in years (probably since I started drinking wine in cafes instead of water) but I remembered how refreshing it was. It is just as I remembered, so that's a good thing.

Aliantha • Sep 9, 2008 7:32 pm
Thanks waffle. I have to say, I'm not feeling too sexy lately. In fact, I feel downright frumpy, and I'm starting to feel uncomfortable in some of my old clothes which really shits me at the moment.

On a brighter note, I'm officially 11 weeks today. That means I'm over 25% of the way through. Yay.
Pooka • Sep 9, 2008 8:45 pm
Flint always thought I was extremely sexy in a pair of maternity overalls... perhaps that would work for you ;-))
Aliantha • Sep 9, 2008 8:48 pm
We don't get them over here too much. I'd have to search pretty hard to find them I think. lol

I shouldn't feel too bad though. I'm going to get much fatter, so it's probably best if I get over my feelings of frumpiness. Maybe I should go shopping and get some nice pretty maternity clothes instead of trying to squeaze into my old ones.
morethanpretty • Sep 10, 2008 1:46 am
Good idea Ali, buying new clothes always is. :)
Sundae • Sep 10, 2008 7:34 am
I agree - squeezing into clothes that don't fit always makes you feel worse.

If you don't want to spend too much money I seriously advocate eBay - lots of people want to sell maternity clothes due to their ephemeral nature, and there are some really nice things on there.

Aliantha • Sep 21, 2008 10:34 pm
Today I had a nucal translucency screening which is a scan to detect the possibility of any chromosonal disorders. The scan along with particular blood tests help to give you an idea of your risk factor of having a child with downs syndrome as an example.

You are considered to be high risk if you have a less than 1:300 chance. My risk is considered to be extremely low at 1:4019. We were very relieved.

Everything else is normal and the baby is looking very healthy.

All in all, a very positive result.

V, the baby says thankyou, and so do we. :)
kerosene • Sep 29, 2008 3:47 pm
Hey, Ali. How you feeling? Are you still having the massive headaches? I had some seriously bad headaches in my 3rd tri. They rushed me in to the doctor's office because of it. It seems like they were worried that it was a sign that my blood pressure was high. I turned out okay. Have you asked your doctor about it?
TheMercenary • Sep 29, 2008 4:55 pm
Good reports, stay healthy.
Aliantha • Oct 2, 2008 7:22 pm
Nothing much to report on re headaches Case. Everything seems to be going pretty well. I'm 14 weeks now, and life is proceeding at a fairly mundane pace. I have a wicked cold at the moment though which is a bitch because I can't really take anything besides honey and lemon drinks. I think I'm on the mend as of this morning though. My body is expelling a lot of yucky yellowy greenish gunk at a great rate of knots.

Aliantha • Oct 9, 2008 6:50 pm

Clodfobble • Oct 9, 2008 7:09 pm
Don't you guys have any pasteurized cheese over there?
Aliantha • Oct 9, 2008 7:10 pm
Yeah...but generally they say not to give them solids in any form till six months. Cheese is classed as a solid.

That being said, my previous comment was a bit tongue in cheek really. I think some kids need solids earlier. I started both my boys on a little bit of farex (rice cereal) at night before bed at about 2 months to give them a fuller belly in order to help them start sleeping through the night.

I recommend it to anyone who values sleep, but I know most mothers like to stick to the rules these days.

Didn't harm my boys though.
Clodfobble • Oct 9, 2008 10:41 pm
Oh, I was confused--I thought you were talking about you being six months into the pregnancy. Doctors here recommend that pregnant women do not eat unpasteurized cheeses (like bleu cheese, goat cheese, etc.) during pregnancy, especially early on.

You're also not supposed to eat cured meats and pate or anything offalish. I try and avoid these items, but I haven't completely done so.

One thing I have managed to avoid is cleaning out the cats litter tray though. :)

Things are going along fairly well. I've been getting headaches again lately, but not too bad. Actually I have one right now which is a bitch and it doesn't seem to matter what I do it wont go away. I think I might go get some accupuncture.
TheMercenary • Oct 23, 2008 4:13 pm
Ali, you may need to do something more important than accupuncture. Like when you have another HA get your BP checked asap. It can be one of the first signs of pre-eclampsia. Do you have any mild vision changes with the HA? This is really important. (See PM)

Tomorrow is our half way scan. I'll be 19 weeks on Wednesday, and apparently that's officially half way (as opposed to 20 weeks which I thought seemed more logical). Anyway, here's to hoping it's a girl. There's too much testosterone in this household already.
SquidGirl • Nov 3, 2008 9:20 am
Wow - congrats to you! I told everyone that my body would not permit testosterone. I said I would either be pregnant with a girl, or a gay boy. Miette-Paméla ended up as a girl...so much for the cabaret clubs and watching future remakes of Queer as Folk together.

Good luck!!!
Sundae • Nov 3, 2008 9:29 am
Actually that's a point. There is a theory that it is the mother's rejection of testosterone creates homosexuality. Which has been also suggested for the English tradition of sending the second son (the spare) into the Church.

But it's not proven of course :) And I know Ali & Daz would love another healthy son, gay or otherwise. Still, I'm keeping fingers crossed for a girl, just to complete the set.

Please, please, please - if all is well, can we have pics too? Youngest evar Dwellar offspring?

Here's to confirmation that everything is going well anyway, thinking of you.
Aliantha • Nov 3, 2008 5:45 pm
We'll know in a few hours, and I'll post another pic of the ultrasound like the first one. :)

You're right SG, we'll be happy with whatever comes out, but it would be nice to have a girl.

If the theory that you need to have sex three days prior to ovulation is correct, then it should be a girl, but we'll just wait and see. :)

I think you should name him after a place in another country. The Beckhams named their son Brooklyn. Bill Clinton's daughter is Chelsea. Britney's son is Sean Preston.

Suggestions - Peckham (Peckham Rye if you want to be posh), Dulwich, Southwar, Leicester. All with the added bonus that your son will have to spell/ pronounce them for people for the rest of his life. It adds character.

Or Sue.

J/K of course. Are you going to have a 3D sonogram made? You can even see facial expressions on them. Unreal what they can do

Probably not Sarge. Unless the docs think there's something wrong, I probably wont have another one. I'll be happy to just wait and see how he looks when he comes out.

He'll be my first non brown eyed child. Dazza has green eyes and I have blue, so he'll have one or the other. :)
Aliantha • Nov 7, 2008 5:31 pm
I like Darcy, but Dazza isn't that keen on it. We thought about Axel or maybe Jesse, but my cousin has a daughter named Jessica and she gets Jessi for short, so I'll have to sound out the family politics on that one. lol

20 weeks today. Half way through! Can't wait for the next half to be finished. I'm so over being pregnant...
SquidGirl • Nov 12, 2008 1:43 am
Congrats! Just a little longer to go...

I suggest Boy: Declan or Adrick
Girl: Miette (my daughter is the only "small sweet thing" I know, I'd love to have another Miette out there)
Sundae • Nov 12, 2008 12:20 pm
Anchovy.
Might not be to everyone's taste, but those who love him will love him completely :)

Or my favourite - Felix.
Big Sarge • Nov 12, 2008 2:26 pm
Barack?? I hear it is very popular right now. If you have a girl, maybe Baracka?
Aliantha • Nov 12, 2008 3:19 pm
Adrick is very close to Aderick which is a combination of my two existing sons names. Aden and Maverick

I don't think Anchovie, Felix or Barack are likely to be front runners, but thanks for playing. lol

Dazza suggested Tye the other day which I don't totally hate, so it's a good chance at the moment.
Clodfobble • Nov 12, 2008 4:01 pm
To complete the symmetry, you need a name like Zeke or Zane. Then you'll have A, M, and Z.

Darcy but spelt D'Arsey :D

Ethan, Aidan, Rowan, Gabriel, and Julian are some of my favorite boys' names.

But I'm quite unimaginative. I named mine Chris. :)

Congrats on everything. I have a few fuzzy little u/s photos of my own. For my daughter, back in 1995 they let us bring in a VCR tape and recorded a video, which was very cool! Do they still do that, anywhere? I wonder.

I had a love/hate thing with pregnancy. I hated being pregnant because it just took so damn LONG, you know? But I loved feeling the little kicks and squirms. You get to the point where you just want to "belly watch" because you can see the baby swooshing around in there; you actually see the little elbows and knees poking out, it's so cool!

I kind of miss those days. Not enough to do it again though. ;)
Sundae • Nov 13, 2008 12:51 am
My first two cats were called Gabriel and Raphael. Gabe was my favourite (I cried more leaving him than I did my husband - wicked woman that I am).

But hey, if you're going with cat names, I was delighted that Dylan was named as such, it's a favourite name of mine anyway. The breeder said she never really called him Dylan, so I could change it if I wanted (she called him Twinkle!) but it was Diz's name I'd have changed, given the choice. His given name was Dizney - bleurgh. I'm so not a Disney fan!

Anyway, there's three more for you - Raphael, Diz and Dylan. With two older brothers he won't get beaten up in the playground at least :)
Aliantha • Nov 13, 2008 1:07 am
By the time he goes to school, there's a good chance our older boys will pretty close to moving out of home. I don't think they're going to do him much good in the playground. lol

I feel him kicking that's for sure. It's been going on for quite a while now. I can't say I'm enjoying this pregnancy at all though. I'm just waiting for it to be finished.

If you want Persian names, I prefer Darius or Cambyses.

I think he should have a longish name that has various permutations built in. That way, the lad can do a "rebellious" name change and assert his individuality, without having to do a heap of paperwork, and it keeps him on a shortish list of reasonable names so he won't take Treehugger Dolfinlove as his new name.
Maverick is good in that he can be called Mav or Rick or even Ricky (but I have my doubts because, aside from the top gun connection, doesn't it mean calf abandoned by its mother? I digress).
William, Johnathon, Robert, and Elizabeth have lots of good variations, although the latter might be a bit hard for a lad to carry off, especially in Queensland.

Meh, call him Steve. Steve is always cool.
Aliantha • Nov 20, 2008 4:41 pm
We're down to about 4 or 5 names atm.

Darcy, Tye, Alex (or Lex), and I can't remember the other couple so I'd say they're out of the running for now.

Dazza suggested Julian or some other girly name which I rejected the other day.
kerosene • Nov 20, 2008 4:50 pm
I like Alex. I don't think I have known a male Darcy...I have known some females with that name, though.

Darcy is definitely a girl's name in the US. I like Tye, but I've only ever seen it spelled Ty.

Darcy would just end up being Dazza too/2. Tye ...um. Alex ...is sometimes "sandy" here (well alexander is). fabian.....hmmm... nope, and i am a kid-weird-namer

What about Tugboat? all aussie soaps have one, don't they?
Sundae • Nov 21, 2008 6:38 am
Lex is cool. Like Max, but less of a gentleman. I also read some interesting slash fiction on Lex Luther (suggested by Cloud) and he certainly was not a gentleman in that!

How about an animal name like Wolf or Tiger? Actually I knew a young guy whose family always called him Tigger - it was so wonderfully cute to hear this late teen, who was rather brooding in a Heathcliff way, respond to such a childish name. Made me a bit weak at the knees actually! (No I didn't sleep with him - I was sleeping with his cousin)

Or Spider! Very Australian. Although I suppose with Dazza's job a fish name would be more appropriate. Hey - how about Sandy? As in the fish spirit in Monkey. Monster might think that's too... sandy though.
Aliantha • Nov 21, 2008 5:42 pm
I really don't want to give this child a dumb name that'll be difficult to deal with. Something out of the mainstream is ok, but I'm not naming him after an animal SG. lol

Darcy is a family name on my side, and it's masculine. It was my great uncles name. Darcy Doyle. How's that for some UK roots?

I like Max. That was one of the names we'd thought up one day when there wasn't much doing. Maybe I should bring it up again.
Sundae • Nov 21, 2008 6:41 pm
If I saw Darcy on a job application form I'd assume it was male. But then the merkins think Robin is female, so it's pbvious there's a cultural divide anyway.

Sigh - no luck with the animal names. are you sure - how about Weasel ;)
Clodfobble • Nov 21, 2008 7:58 pm
I think you should go with Max, but make his formal name Maximillian, or Maximus.

There was a kid in the store named Maximus the other day (his mother kept yelling at him to stop wandering off, so everyone in the store knew his name by the time they left.)

Actually, when I mentioned Max to the kids, Mav pointed out to me that apparently, Max is the number one dog name in Australia. That doesn't really surprise me. Now that I think about it, I know two dogs named Max.

As far as getting Max and Mav mixed up, it's probably actually a good choice really. I spend a lot of time calling Aden, Maden because I go to call Mav when I mean Aden.

I think all parents call their kids by the wrong siblings name sometimes or as I do, create some whole new combination of both.

At least if there's Max and Mav, Aden wont have to suffer another strange name being added to the list.

I'm 23 weeks today. Almost through my second trimester now.

I had an antenatal visit yesterday and they offered me a social worker. Apparently they're concerned because I haven't put on any weight at all (in fact i've lost a couple of kg's) during my second trimester. This was after I told them about Dazza being away for almost 2 months and having to do a lot of travelling for the kids each day etc, on top of the ligament damage I still have in my abdomen.

Anyway, I told them I'd be fine. The kids are almost finished school now, so that'll be one less thing, plus Dazza is back, so he can take on a bit more of the burden.

I was actually really surprised that they'd be that concerned. I don't think it's a big deal. I feel healthy. The baby is healthy, and I can stand to lose a few kg's anyway.

So anyway, that's my latest update. Another scan next week - just to make sure everything's ok according to the midwives - and then plain sailing till after xmas.
Clodfobble • Dec 2, 2008 6:45 pm
They told me repeatedly that I wasn't gaining enough weight either. But both babies were plenty big--they were just crushing my lungs instead of stretching my middle.
Aliantha • Dec 3, 2008 1:57 am
I feel like this baby is sitting right against my stomach. I just don't feel hungry much and I know it's because my stomach is being squashed. If I eat a normal sized meal I often end up vomiting simply because the food just doesn't seem to be able to go down.

Anyway, I'm not going to worry. I just try to make sure what I do eat counts. And plenty of vitamin C(hocolate)
Clodfobble • Dec 3, 2008 10:03 am
Have you done your glucose tolerance test yet?
Aliantha • Dec 3, 2008 4:52 pm
That's in about 4 weeks. 6th of Jan. They don't seem concerned about it though and I have no history of diabetes either during pregnancy or in the family.

First time I ran across this thread. Congrats to you Aliantha. My wife may be pregnant with our second, but we're not sure yet. We recently decided to have another, and she's feeling queasy.

I like the names Duncan, Maxwell, Mason, or Ian. If we have a boy this time, my wife wants him to be named Collin.

I imagine you guys have your name all picked out by now.
Aliantha • Dec 7, 2008 5:43 pm
Nope, still no final decision on the name. We have about 3 1/2 months to keep thinking though, so hopefully it might happen. Dazza suggested Aaron the other day which i don't hate, but I still prefer Max. One of the kids suggested Zach which i actually quite like too, so we'll give that one a bit more thought.

I hope you're lucky soon with the whole conception process Radar. It's so heartbreaking when it takes so long and you start to think there's something wrong with you or your partner or both. So good luck (although maybe you don't need any luck from the sounds of things. lol)
Aliantha • Dec 9, 2008 7:39 pm
I had another scan yesterday. It turns out our boy has a face, so that's a relief. *whew*

Doc said that if he keeps growing at the same rate, he'll be at least 8.5lb's. That's bigger than my other two, and their father was Samoan! Anyway, anything can happen. Maybe he's just been hungry this last couple of months. lol Maybe that explains my weight loss. He's been sucking the life outta me.

Aliantha • Jan 7, 2009 5:22 pm
On Tuesday I had the 'Glucose tollerance test'. They give you a very sweet drink then do a blood test to see how your body is processing sugars.

Unfortunately mine has come back high, which could indicate gestational diabetes so I have to go take the test again but it's a bit more involved second time around.

I know that this sometimes happens to women during pregnancy and it's often/usually nothing that the woman has done wrong. Generally it's just the hormones being out of whack, but it still upsets me to think that my baby could be at risk.

I hope the second test provides a better result. I will never forgive myself if something happens to our baby.

Whoa, whoa--it's never something that the mother has done wrong. Your pancreas is suddenly having to work harder than normal, and it's suffering just like every other part of your body.

I failed the first test, and only barely passed the second--they recommended I watch my diet just to be on the safe side--and I personally know three people who failed both tests. All that happens is you go on a special diet just like a normal diabetic would, and test your blood sugar on a regular basis. The vast majority of the time a controlled diet is all it takes, and even if that's not enough, it just means you have to take insulin until the baby's born. I know it's impossible not to worry about your baby :)--but seriously, it's no big deal.
Pooka • Jan 7, 2009 7:18 pm
I failed the 1 hr and passed the 3 hr glucose test. Its pretty common.
Aliantha • Jan 7, 2009 7:21 pm
Yeah..that's what they keep telling me.

I just can't help worrying...and it sux because I can't get in to do the second test till next Wednesday.

Anyway, I'm sure you're both right and everything will be fine no matter what happens.
Clodfobble • Jan 7, 2009 7:33 pm
If you want to feel like you're doing something in the meantime, you can always follow a rough approximation of the diet now: it's basically just high in protein and low in carbs. Have eggs for breakfast instead of cereal, have more veggies instead of a roll at dinner... super easy.
Aliantha • Jan 7, 2009 7:41 pm
They want me to eat complex carbs and protien which is basically the diet I've been following anyway. Cereals, grains, and meats, and fish along with healthy veges but not too much fruit.

From what I've read, that's more or less what they'll require if it turns out to be positive anyway and I may or may not need medication.

The thing that upsets me is that gestational diabetes is one of the reasons babies can be still born, so that's really freaking me out aside from the health risks for me which don't seem to be rating at all really.
Sundae • Jan 8, 2009 8:14 am
Chick - anecdotal evidence again, but I worked with a colleague and friend who had gestational diabetes in both her pregnancies. She delivered two very healthy, happy babies.

It's no better or worse than any diagnosis. It's just we know more about it these days.

All my thoughts to you - and try to accept that your body and your baby's body will do what they can - evolution is a damned powerful force when it comes to reproduction. Both you and him will fight like tigers to get him born.

I don't think you want me to rephrase that in a religious way (I'm sorry, I couldn't) but you do so if it helps. Either way, the odds are in your favour.

My thoughts and care are with you & all the chaps.

Anyway, it's mainly the bright colours I was going for. Getting him to focus etc...all the pop psych crap they go on with...plus, I never had the opportunity to decorate a room for the other two when they were babies, so it was nice to let my imagination go on this one for a while. :)
classicman • Jan 11, 2009 9:55 pm
You should do something with the fan blades - put the dragonflies on there - that way the baby can see them while in his crib - just a thought.
Aliantha • Jan 11, 2009 9:56 pm
I've got mobiles and stuff to put up on his cot, and I'm going to paint his name on the wall once we decide what it's going to be.

More colour to come!
classicman • Jan 11, 2009 10:03 pm
Oh c'mon - paint the damn blades on his fan! Just alternate red and blue or something - It'll be cool to watch him go cross-eyed watching it.
Aliantha • Jan 11, 2009 10:05 pm
lol...sadist!
classicman • Jan 11, 2009 10:07 pm
Well that or he'll learn red and blue make purple when the fan spins really really fast.
Sundae • Jan 12, 2009 9:12 am
It all looks gorgeous!
Lucky, lucky boy.

Serious question - do you think it will be a positive thing that your three boys will have a different colour skin (to eachother) or do you anticipate problems in the future? Sorry, that was the blunt version, I suppose I should say that can you perceive differences for those of your sons that have an alternate heritage.

Inter-racial adoption is a big issue in the UK at the moment, with a large number of children who need to be adopted being from mixed race backgrounds, and the vast majority of couples wanting to adopt being white middle class. And the official thinking seems to weigh very heavily on the non-Causcasian side of the heritage - mixed race and black/ asian etc parents being the preferred parents. As the biological mother you don't have to jump through these hoops, but you & Daryl would certainly not top the list if your two older boys were not your own.

Personally I think children can't thrive in care - there are official statistics to back this up - so send them to where the love is. Any experience they have of an inter-racial family can only benefit them.

I appreciate this is an incredibly personal question - feel free not to answer.

I love the dragonflies!!

(I don't know how they're regarded down under, but here they are seen as messengers of creation, and also work to dispel illusion. Very sweet!)

I can pretty much guarantee that the little one will end up pretty much indifferent to the mobile, but fascinated by the ceiling fan.

At least that's what happens to the babies that get brought into my office. Despite all grown-ups attempts to engage them, they just love to watch those blades going round and round and round.
classicman • Jan 12, 2009 12:55 pm
See - I was right - wolf eht htiw og
Aliantha • Jan 12, 2009 4:38 pm
lol...ok, I might do something with the fan blades then! Satisfied???

Wolf, there's no particular significance attached to dragonflies here that I know of, but I just had this idea of putting a flock(?)/swarm(?) of them on the wall. It's amazing when you see a dozen or so of them going about their business in real life, so I was just trying to capture that organized dissaray with the wall.

Thanks for your comments. :)

Actually, the main thing I've been worried about is remembering to put sunscreen on him all the time. It's not something I've had to worry about too much with Aden and Mav. lol They still wear it to begin with, but they just go browner and browner rather than burning. In fact, the only time they've really been sunburned is one time when Dazza took them fishing on a really hot day and they stood around in the sun all day long without shirts on (not Dazza, he's lilly white).

Within our family I don't expect there'll be any problems with different skin colours, and as the boys are with me most of the time and I'm clearly white when they're not, we're used to the looks we sometimes get although not as much as you might expect. I know people wonder when they see Dazza and me and the boys together, but I've never bothered to say anything. This new baby will be lucky to come into a family that's got a little bit of it's own diversity, and I'm pretty sure that if any of the other kids give him any grief over the difference in skin colour, they might have to consider dealing with his big brothers. Particularly Aden who can get pretty feisty if someone's giving Mav a hard time. I can only imagine it'll be the same for the new little bloke.

I know it's not PC to say so, but Aden and Mav are pretty good looking kids, so I think this has saved them from a lot of teasing and racial comments they might otherwise have had to suffer. It hasn't completely insulated them from it, but I think it's definitely helped. They're also leaders among their peers, so it's usually coming from one of the kids at the bottom of the pecking order so it makes it easier for them to cope with and they've done very well for themselves imo.

When it all comes down to it, we're all colourblind in our household and we've never had a situation where it's been said or even implied that something has happened because of someone's colour. As parents, we've always spent time talking about the reasons why some people make nasty comments about numerous things with the hope that our boys will always know that it's not them with the problem, but rather the person doing the saying. I expect we'll follow the same path with the new one and any possible future progeny.

Good for you Ali, you sound like a great mom. I think it important to instill that stuff in your kids. Hey, what is your due date?
Aliantha • Jan 15, 2009 4:14 pm
April fools day. ;) A bit over 10 weeks from now. Hopefully it'll be closer to 6 or 8 weeks. lol I'm over this!
Aliantha • Jan 27, 2009 5:13 pm
9 weeks to go now.
Aliantha • Feb 4, 2009 6:48 pm
We have a little under 8 weeks to go now. We've pretty much decided on Max Cooper McPhee for the baby's name and pretty much everything is organized except the car seat which we'll sort out in the next week or so.

I just can't wait for him to arrive now.
Shawnee123 • Feb 4, 2009 6:53 pm
Great name! :)
Aliantha • Feb 4, 2009 6:55 pm
Yep, the translation is, Number One/The Best Barrel Maker McPhee. ;)

Thanks though. We really like it. :)

I should point out that it was case who suggested Max, so if there was a prize for picking the name, it should go to her. :D

? McPhee? Family name?

As a third time Mum I know you know that 8 weeks is practically due date anyway. Keep us up to date!
Aliantha • Feb 6, 2009 6:04 pm
McPhee is Dazza's last name. That'll be the babies surname...and mine one day when I perfect a signature (yes I know it's been almost 3 years), and the older two boys want to add McPhee to the end of their names too, so I might get that all organised this year.

I'm hoping I only have another 4 or 5 weeks to wait to be honest. I'm so ready to have this baby now! lol

what? those last 8 weeks are the longest evah.... third time moms know that the best
Aliantha • Feb 7, 2009 8:25 pm
I get what you're both saying, and in my case it's six of one and half a dozen of the other. We've got so much going on here atm that every week seems to be flying by so time goes quickly, but when I'm in each day it seems interminable because everything is just such an effort now. I was sitting out in the front garden having a cuppa this morning and looking mournfully at my plants. They looked so sad and neglected. I think they're just going to have to get used to fending for themselves for a while. I really can't be arsed with them.
Sundae • Feb 8, 2009 7:24 am
Remember I've met more pregnant Mums that practically anyone apart from a midwife.
I know they are the longest days (and nights!) but I also know babbas are born early due to the odd way that doctors time pregnancies.

Pleased to hear that your boys love Daz enough to take his name. Not that it would be a lack of love if they didn't! (like you :p) I know who to address the card to now.

Can't wait for the first sight of the chap. Oh wait - I've already had that. Can't wait to see him outside your body. And I bet you can't either!
Aliantha • Feb 10, 2009 4:30 pm
7 weeks to go! Time flies when your back's aching and everything seems like so much effort.

Dazza and I are going away this weekend for Valentines Day. I'm really looking forward to it. It'll be nice to have a couple of days to ourselves without any kids (other than the one in my belly) before the bomb's dropped. lol

:( still more important than girls, huh?

not a personal criticism, just saddened that there is still this "excitement" in society over a son that there isn't over a daughter as firstborn....
Aliantha • Feb 10, 2009 11:51 pm
Well, he's a man, and he wanted to teach the child how to fish and thought I'd be upset about him getting a girl all dirty. (we actually both wanted to girl to be honest because we have the two boys already)

I told him he could teach a girl how to fish. My dad did. ;) My dad also taught me how to pluck poultry, slaughter livestock, shoot straight and drive a car, and speaking of cars, he taught me how to do a basic grease and oil change along with setting the timing and tappets and how to change the plugs and leads.

My Dad taught me a lot of stuff. I'm hoping Dazza will do the same for our child.

eta: That being said, I think it's pretty normal for men to want sons and women to want daughters broadly speaking. We bond with the child that's the same sex more than the opposite. Dr Phil (and a whole lot of other psychologists) said.

6 weeks to go today.

I spent last night in hospital. Had a BP of 160/98 yesterday when I went for my checkup. I'd been having some symptoms of high bp over the last couple of weeks, so was expecting it to be higher, but not that much. My normal reading is about 120/65.

They've done blood tests and urine blah blah. They suspect mild pre-eclampsia and have prescribed lots of resting and no more stressing. Visits to the hospital twice weekly from now on and possible induction in a few weeks time.
Aliantha • Feb 19, 2009 7:11 pm

Thanks Sarge. It's really nice of you to take the time to stop into my moaning thread considering all the troubles you have of your own atm. You're a gem.

I don't think there'll be anymore babies after this one. This particular condition is only likely to recur with any future pregnancies and in fact very well could be worse. We already have two wonderful boys. One more makes three, and that's a nice number anyway. :)

Along with these other issues, I've discovered a small lump under my arm. Here's to hoping it's just a blocked gland or something. I'll know more soon.
DucksNuts • Feb 21, 2009 10:35 pm

The lump is probably just hormones or, as you said, a blocked gland.

Chin Up luv!!

I expect a text message when youre in labour, so I can let your extended 'net family know whats going on.

I'll let you know when the big day arrives mate. :) I'm sure I already had you on my list anyway...where ever that's gone to now.

I'll see what the doc's got to say on Tues. Who knows, maybe I'll have a baby by the end of the week. At this stage as far as I'm concerned, that's the best outcome.
monster • Feb 23, 2009 1:43 am
At 35 weeks, try to hang on just a little longer if it isn't endangering your health. Your baby uses those last few weeks to gain a little fat and improve lung function -both important factors in fighting diseases, especially as you are just about to head into winter...
Aliantha • Feb 23, 2009 2:08 am
Yeah...another week or two would be good. We'll see what the ultrasound reveals tomorrow. If the placenta is damaged, he's not going to do too well anyway, but I'm sure it's fine. He's still moving around a fair bit. What is worrying me is the pain in my back which is moving further and further up, and seems to be deeper. Hopefully it's just normal pain and not liver inflamation. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but whatever the professionals tell me I should do is what's likely to happen.
capnhowdy • Feb 23, 2009 8:44 am
I've been following this thread all along. Just not posting. I am so proud of you, Ali.

Thanks capn. :) I don't know if you need to be proud of me though. I'm not the first woman in the world to get preggers. ;) I've just turned this thread into a kind of diary of the event mostly for my own reference, but also for those who're interested in seeing the journey. It's nice that lots of you have had some great input for me, or even just words of support during the times things seem never ending.

Today's the big day. I get to find out if everything's ok. :) Keep your fingers crossed (and your legs if you don't want to end up in my situation lol)

No worries, Mate. I'm too goddam ugly to get anyone with child. 'Sides... I've done that and didn't win any awards.

Waiting for update......
Aliantha • Feb 23, 2009 8:44 pm
Update!

Home now. BP still a bit high, but they're going to let it ride for a bit. Scan revealed the baby is 6 1/2lb and if he goes full term will be around 9lb. Not bad for a mother who has failed to put on any weight worth talking about.

All in all a good result so far.

The wait continues.
Aliantha • Feb 24, 2009 9:29 pm
So today marks 35 weeks for us, which means only 5 weeks or so to go.

I nearly blanked out in the kitchen waiting for my toast to pop up this morning. I think I'll stop driving for the mean time. The risk just doesn't seem worth it.
Clodfobble • Feb 25, 2009 12:41 pm
Ali, with your blood pressure at borderline levels, have they told you to stay on bedrest? I think not driving is a really good idea.
Aliantha • Feb 25, 2009 4:16 pm
Oh yeah, they told me to put my feet up and keep quiet. I guess that means you lot will be seeing more of me than some people would like. ;)

I'm sure it'll all be fine though. Hopefully he'll be popping out in a couple of weeks all by himself anyway. It's just a waiting game now really.

Actually, the obstetrician said I should start my maternity leave now in order to reduce stress and I explained to him that I haven't had a job through this whole pregnancy, and no small children and a very supportive husband, so I'd be fine. He told me it was on the contrary and that if I already had a relaxed lifestyle with those readings I could find myself in trouble if I didn't take him seriously. Anyway, I was taking him seriously. I don't want them sticking me in the hospital to hang around till Max is born. I'd much rather be at home with my family, so I'll be good. :)
DanaC • Feb 25, 2009 4:27 pm
you'd better....we'll be checking up
Clodfobble • Feb 25, 2009 5:56 pm
When you are laying down, make sure to lay on your left side, it's easier on your heart.
Aliantha • Mar 1, 2009 6:29 pm
I have 4 weeks and two days to go now. The baby's head has well and truly dropped, to the point where I can feel it grinding on my pelvis and making it almost impossible to walk at times. I have to pee a teaspoon every half an hour or so, so sleeping is becoming difficult to the point where sometimes my brain wont stop saying, "what's the point of going back to sleep? You're only going to have to wake up again shortly.", which is very annoying, because the thing I feel like doing mostly now is sleeping.

I hope this boy is ready to pop out in the next week or so. I can't wait to hold him.

I do lay on my left side as much as possible Clod, but I find if I stay in one position all night my hip gets really sore...regardless of how many pillows and stuff I try to use. I guess most of us pregnant women know all about that stuff though. Not long now though. I'm sick of eating chalk all night long.
capnhowdy • Mar 1, 2009 6:51 pm
I've heard women say that excessive heartburn = Boy.
Aliantha • Mar 1, 2009 6:53 pm

There's also one that says that heartburn means your baby will have lots of hair.
Aliantha • Mar 2, 2009 4:37 pm
I had to take Aden to the doc yesterday for a tetanus booster, so while i was there i asked him to do my BP. It was 130/90. Boy was I glad it wasn't at the hospital clinic or I'd have spent another night in hospital.

Too bad I have to go to the hospital clinic today though. It'll be lower this morning. It always seems to be in the mornings.
Aliantha • Mar 2, 2009 9:55 pm
They were going to stick me in hospital again for 'observation', but I managed to talk my way out of it. I have to go back again in a couple of days for another CTG on the baby and BP test for me.
classicman • Mar 2, 2009 11:43 pm
Be careful Ali - Geez a few days or weeks versus a lifetime - stop messin around girl!
Aliantha • Mar 2, 2009 11:47 pm
I'm not messing around. I can tell if my BP is high. I don't need them them to blow my arm up to know.

I'll just keep my feet up and take it easy. The worst that can happen is that I'll go into labour, and from my perspective, that's the best thing.

If the baby stops moving around or I feel seriously ill, I'll get myself to the hospital. In the mean time, I'm sure there are people who need the bed more than I do.

I'm only pregnant. Not dying. ;)
classicman • Mar 2, 2009 11:56 pm

Aliantha • Mar 3, 2009 12:00 am
Aliantha • Mar 8, 2009 5:41 pm
Had a visit to the hospital again on Friday and totally lost it when they made me go through the whole process of blood tests, urine tests, CTG and a list of questions a mile long. They suggested I could see a counsellor which I declined.

Now I have to go again today and probably go through the same process.

3 weeks and a couple of days to go. I hope it's not too much longer. I'm turning into a basket case. :(

I'm sure we'll both feel differently in a few days though. :)

Oh and yes, it does seem to have drawn out SG. In some ways it seems to fast, but I've basically been pregnant the whole time we've been in our new house. I'll be glad to give my poor garden some attention after Max is here actually. It's looking a bit neglected.
Aliantha • Mar 12, 2009 7:43 pm
Only 4 more sleeps and I'll get to hold our baby for the first time. I'm very excited about the prospect now and really just can't wait for Tuesday...if I make it that far. I've planned out a few things to do over the weekend to take up the time, and keeping busy will only help get my body ready for delivery anyway. We're going to give the house a good clean up so that no one has to worry too much about housework for a couple of weeks or so. We've also got to make one final visit to the hospital on the weekend for a BP check and CTG just to make sure all is well. Hopefully Dazza will get to do the races again on Sat arvo. Last weekend he pulled up with over $1k profit. So that was a bonus. He usually finishes up in the black, but normally only a few hundred. Then I'll watch funniest home videos saturday night. Maybe the laughing will help! Monday I'm going to rest as much as possible and prepare for the 5.30am start on Tuesday. Hopefully by lunchtime I'll have a baby.
