July 23, 2008: Ajolote

xoxoxoBruce • Jul 23, 2008 1:24 am
From Neatorama.
I wonder if that border fence with Mexico, will go down in the ground enough to stop these ugly Ajolotes?

Mexican reptile of the genus Bipes. It and several other tropical burrowing species are placed in the Amphisbaenia, a group separate from lizards and snakes among the Squamata. Unlike the others, however, which have no legs, it has a pair of short but well-developed front legs. In line with its burrowing habits, the skull is very solid, the eyes small, and external ears absent.

The scales are arranged in rings, giving the body a wormlike appearance.

Anyone here got the recipe for chipotle ajalote? I remember it has a good flavor, but it's kind of bony.

I don't know why, but this really give me the judders.
Odd, because I like reptiles. Perhaps because it looks like a giant worm (I save them when I see them on the pavement, but I still don't like them much) or perhaps because of the word burrowing. Creepy.

I was certain this was going to turn out to be from the April (Fools) issue of Discover magazine, but apparently it's real - and from the expression on its face, it looks like it thinks that we are not. :eyebrow:
