People with Secret Talents

So I've been working with another contractor for several months now, whose main job has been running the voice recording sessions, which I then edit at home. He had mentioned at one point that his primary experience was with recording his own music, so I assumed he was a struggling alt. rock guitar player like half the other people in this town.

Today was his last day, and he sent me his email address so we can keep in touch. The email address read more like a company name, so I thought maybe he had a website and went searching out of curiosity.

Turns out he's not a rocker, he's a fucking fantastic flute player.

At least it looks fucking fantastic to me. That's an original, improvised piece; there's another video of a composed piece that looks quite a bit harder but is less melodic so I liked this one better. Steve, does this look like professional concert skill to you?

Sheesh. How am I supposed to stereotype people, if I can't even trust that "musician" means talentless wannabe rocker living on his mom's couch?

Edit: be sure to listen to at least 1:30 in, when the style changes dramatically.

That's why I love playing charity gigs at the hospital.
My co-workers wander in, and see me in drummer mode.

You're right, Clod, he is a fantastic flute player, or seems like it to me. I'm not a musician, tho.

My ex would never really even talk about being a piano player, so when someone showed up somewhere he was playing they'd be floored. I, of course, tried to brag him up all the time but he was quiet about it...until he started playing, and the music spoke for him.

Sigh, I wish my secret talent was something other than "able to eat an entire bag of cheezy poofs in one sitting."

Thanks clod. He's got talent. I like the whole Jethro Tull into hip-hop thing.

Can you point us to his web site?

I think we should hold off judgment on his flute playing skills until Sheldon weighs in...
rim, ahem, shot

He's great-- a nice, solid, clear tone.

Well, here's his MySpace page, wherein I just learned that he only started playing at age 17 (WTF?) And here's the page of the local band he plays with sometimes, The Brew.

Holy Mackerel. He's amazing, That change at 1:30 is crazy, if I hadn't seen him playing it I wouldn't have known what it was.

Your assuming he was a wannabe rocker living on his mom's couch made me picture him doing a "Fun To"
style pachelbel's canon on flute...

I used to play the flute when I was younger. Didn't keep it up long enough to get good at it. But learned enough to know it's a bloody difficult instrument to master. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him play.

I'm afraid I don't know how to do the embedding Youtube video's in a post thing, but here's Greg Patillo - the "original" beatboxing floutist - on the Super Mario Brothers theme:

Here he is on an Inspector Gadget Remix:

Was Ian Anderson the original beatboxing flautist?
TheMercenary • Jun 8, 2008 11:34 am
The Greg Patillo is FANTASTIC, sounds just like Ian Anderson. Certainly not a new thing for all of us Jethro Tull fans (I have seen them 4 or 5 times), but outstanding never the less.

Ian Anderson is a borg. No human being could possibly stand on one foot and play the shit he plays, without going into a coma. Nope, definitely a borg. ;)
