The lack of the Irish

Cloud • May 23, 2008 10:27 am
It occurs to me, in the many English-language forums I have participated in, that there are loads of people from the States, from Australia, from Britain, even Scotland, even from Asia and Europe . . . but almost never from Ireland. In fact, I don't recall any. I wonder why? They speak English there, don't they? Are there any Cellardwellars from Ireland?
xoxoxoBruce • May 23, 2008 10:37 am
Yes, but not vocal.
skysidhe • May 23, 2008 11:02 am
They're busy drinking in the pubs, tending sheep and making love.

oh and I am of Irish decent....and native american. There isn't any of those either. I can't tell you where they're drinking or if they have anything do do with sheep since they built the casino. ( joke)

I am not as dumb as I sound....well maybe a little but in a spry way.
Sundae • May 23, 2008 11:14 am
The Irish can't make it online, because they are too busy talking the hind leg off a donkey somewhere. You can't stop them once they've started.
(Yes, I am from an Irish family, so I am allowed to say that).

Seriously - it has a much smaller population than the UK - approx 4 million vs 60 million - so maybe it's just a numbers thing.
Trilby • May 23, 2008 11:14 am
I'm Irish and I think Sundae is, too.

That is our family's favorite expression. We often describe such people as "donkey surgeons" or refer to the large number of legless donkeys in their wake.

Should also mention I'm about as Irish as the day is long.
Ibby • May 23, 2008 1:01 pm
What about kiwis? We've got a buncha aussies, where're all the new zealanders?
Sundae • May 23, 2008 1:09 pm
Just checked and NZ has approx the same population as Eire.
There you go then, under say 5 million and they slip under the radar (note, not the Radar).

We did have a Kiwi, once.
Urbane Guerrilla • May 23, 2008 1:44 pm
Yeah, did ZenGum move out of Japan or something? Haven't heard anything from him lately.

Kiwi's are cool people. Well so are the Aussie's for that matter.
SteveDallas • May 23, 2008 2:46 pm
That's true enough, but I can't hear the term "kiwi" without thinking of small, green fruits. Sorry.

Irish, Scottish, and French here. Yes this explains a lot.
;)

NINA?
Cloud • May 23, 2008 6:38 pm
not talking about descent, 'tho I was thinking about it when this topic occurred to me (Scots-Irish here). Just--seems odd. I don't think I've ever encountered anyone from Ireland on a forum, but I have from New Zealand.
Trilby • May 24, 2008 10:12 am
Ya know why their aren't any Irish on here? They're at the pubs.
SteveDallas • May 24, 2008 10:26 am
I'm descended from English Quakers, though they lived in Tiperary County before they came to the colonies.
Sundae • May 25, 2008 7:39 am
Another thing I've noticed - and others have certainly mentioned over the years - we are an almost exclusively white forum. Only three exceptions I know of among regular posters and a few more mixed heritage and most of those not in the previous generation.

Why is that? Do we exclusively talk about stuff white people like (breakfast, wine, living by water).

It's odd. A group of white people round the world found the same site, yet no black, Asian or hispanic people did.
Perry Winkle • May 25, 2008 9:52 am
I'm black, yo.
Undertoad • May 25, 2008 10:32 am
Everyone here is black... text, with an off-white (#F1F1ED) background.

How things change:

Me: "I wish we could find a black lead singer."
My guitarist: "Yeah I know... we'd have it made, black guys are utterly cool right now."

I did say I knew there were exceptions and Fresh was one I had in mind (I've just watched him dancing after all!).

I'm not trying to make an issue out of it, I'm just honestly puzzled that Americans, Brits, Aussies, Nederlanders, etc etc have all come together and yet very few of the ethnically diverse elements of these nations seem to have joined us.

They're at work or in the pub. You won't hear from them until they hook up computers with internet access in all the pubs. ;)

UG, do you have me on ignore?
(Yes, I know, asking that question doesn't make sense, but ...) I've been back in Australia for a year now.

We did have a kiwi here for a while, El Bandito I think he was, but we made him go to the doctor when he described recurring symptoms that were very likely a heart attack. I'm a little concerned that he has never been back. I hope he is okay.

I've got plenty of Irish ancestry, and good servings of German, Scottish and English, which is pretty much the classic pre-1950 Australian mix.

The Americans see it differently, bless 'em.
I'm beginning to understand it now. If someone with an American accent tells you they are half Scottish and half Norwegian, just smile and tell them it's interesting. They'll never have been to either country and likely even their grandparents haven't. And if they do, they'll complain about the shower pressure, the size of the cars and the price of the food anyway ;)

(All said with love, you understand)
Trilby • Feb 19, 2009 8:11 am
so...I'm Native American? ;)

Don't let the stereotype get you down, muffin. We're just playin'. Glad you like it here----we're really not so bad. (well, yes we are, but I'm trying to put a good spin on it)

Anyway---what kind of no good student are you? what year? what major?

Huh. Indians (in India) are always really happy to claim me as one of their own. And get a little pissed off at me when I tell them I'm not Indian, I'm an American.

I'm also Irish on both sides, and you may have had a point a few years ago, but in the last 5-6 years the economy in Ireland has taken off. They have a lot of high tech jobs. A lot of call center stuff from America goes there.

They're working, or at the pub for the most part. It used to be that half of Ireland was on the dole and the other half was working to pay for it.

Define "used to be"! The dole is a comparatively recent phenomenon. My Grandad's father moved to England to be where the work is. The choice then was move or starve, hence the mass exodus through the 20th century. The nuns at my school were Irish, and many's the tale I heard about why we were wicked wasteful children to say we didn't like school dinners when Irish children would jump at the chance of them (okay, the nuns were pretty old by then). Hardly living off the fat of the land.

And even when the dole was introduced, it was not a national trait that half the country just couldn't be arsed to work.

My best friend from the age of 13+ was Irish, and her Da moved the family to England to get a better life for them. I had two work colleagues with Irish mums - one who escaped the Troubles at the last second with a mob at her heels because she was pregnant to a Catholic (they reunited in England) and another who was shipped to Manchester by her family at the age of 14 to get a job in a factory.

I know a fair amount of Irish history. Being a typical mongrel, I'm too English to take the Fuck the English stance that you do, but I'm happy enough to stand up for the country some of my ancestors grew up in.
