Einstein or Monroe?
Ibby • May 23, 2008 3:50 am
...it mostly just looks like marylin with al's face to me.
bigw00dy • May 23, 2008 8:57 am
dammit... i cant walk 15 feet away from my monitor!!!
footfootfoot • May 23, 2008 10:09 am
There was a similar test were one face looked enraged and the other looked happy. I seem to remember Glatt having something to do with that post...
glatt • May 23, 2008 12:08 pm
I remember that one too. Maybe I posted it.

This one doesn't work for me. My office is around 10 x 10, and the monitor isn't in the corner. If I squint though, it kinda works.
dar512 • May 23, 2008 12:54 pm
I had to walk out into the hall to see it.
HungLikeJesus • May 23, 2008 12:56 pm
I think you mean this one. You only need to get back 12 feet for Mr. Angry.
Sundae • May 23, 2008 1:15 pm
I got up and went for a wee in order to see it.

It sort of worked, but I was too far away to see it clearly!
Marilyn had the grinning mouth of a skull though.
But then she is a little bit dead after all.

That's it! It was you.

That would be way more illusory without the title.

jimhelm • Apr 25, 2011 7:45 pm
ah yes. a hairy marylin
Gravdigr • Apr 26, 2011 6:27 pm
Bunny...meh.

Looks more like an angry gopher.
jimhelm • Jan 23, 2012 4:32 pm
which way is he facing?
monster • Jan 23, 2012 4:43 pm
the t-shirt is positioned incorrectly on the shoulder for that to work properly. he's facing forward.
jimhelm • Jan 23, 2012 5:59 pm
agreed, clearly forward facing... in fact when i first saw it, i was just wondering why they had erased part of him... then i saw a flash of the profile... my [strike]eye[/strike] brain wants to see it face on... I have to work to see him sideways..
Gravdigr • Jan 23, 2012 6:49 pm
He's cut away part of the pic using his profile as a guide.

He's facing the camera.
Spexxvet • Jan 24, 2012 8:41 am
If he's facing left, he's got a really funny Stray Cats haircut
Happy Monkey • Nov 30, 2012 3:12 pm
All straight lines.

Weird. Any explanation?
jimhelm • Jan 22, 2013 10:09 am
I think it's because all of the eyes are in the exact same spot. that and the speed of the changes....it makes your brain lag behind and try to see the face as the same.... so when the face shape is slightly different, it appears to stretch and bulge or squish instead of being seen as a brand new image.

but that's just my guess
Griff • Jan 26, 2013 1:17 pm
Do not see effect. :(
Gravdigr • Jan 26, 2013 2:29 pm
Staring at cross in middle?

I'm about a foot and a half, +/-, from my monitor.

Everyone's face should look warped/wonky in your peripheral vision.
Griff • Jan 26, 2013 4:59 pm
Weird, worked that time. Maybe I was too far away before.

Straight and parallel
glatt • Sep 6, 2017 12:15 pm
That's a good one. I had to open it in an image editor to measure the lines and see that they are level and plumb
Flint • Sep 6, 2017 12:47 pm
god almighty
that one pushes the limits of believability
but you can hold a piece of paper up to the monitor and confirm!

Neil deGrasse Tyson‏Verified account @neiltyson

If we were honest about shortcomings of human physiology then "optical illusions” would instead be labeled “brain failures”.

For the season...
Happy Monkey • Dec 9, 2017 6:09 pm
A new one.
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 9, 2017 10:37 pm
Wow, that's amazing.
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 15, 2017 8:36 am
Not everything is what it looks like to you, be careful judging diamonds... and people.

Happy Monkey • Dec 15, 2017 11:10 am
What is the border between the diamonds?
glatt • Dec 15, 2017 11:50 am
I don't think there is a border. I think each diamond is a gradient of gray shading, lighter at the bottom and darker at the top.
Happy Monkey • Dec 15, 2017 1:22 pm
Ah! That makes sense. Very cool.
Gravdigr • Dec 15, 2017 1:56 pm
I don't see a gradient. I see solid gray.
glatt • Dec 15, 2017 3:26 pm
Take a screen shot and use the eyedrop tool in photoshop to measure each diamond at the top and the bottom. You'll see.

I was waiting for Mr. Hand guy to rotate the diamond to give the trick away and blow our minds, but he never did.
glatt • Dec 15, 2017 3:35 pm
What the hell. I'll do it. I selected the color at the top of each diamond and drew a little box to the side, and then I selected the color at the bottom of each diamond and drew a box at the side.

FAKE NEWS
:rides away on a horse:
Gravdigr • Dec 18, 2017 4:00 pm
If there is a gradient, how does one diamond work in all three rows?

Would the gradient be different for each row?
glatt • Dec 18, 2017 4:10 pm
Every single diamond is identical color wise.
Happy Monkey • Dec 19, 2017 11:40 am
I added a bit more to glatt's:
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 19, 2017 8:26 pm
One diamond, copy flipped, with sample color bar from the top and bottom.
