If you could choose just one sporting event

Cloud • May 6, 2008 3:24 pm
one of the things on my "to do before I die list" is to attend a major sporting event. By major, I mean things like the Olympics or the Superbowl. Or the Kentucky Derby, but I don't know how I feel about that now ('nother thread).

I think I've been to maybe one major league baseball game as a kid, and I've been to college events, but nothing big.

So, what do you think would be the most fun for a non-sporting person like me?

What would your choice be?
classicman • May 6, 2008 3:49 pm
Spend $5000 and go to the superbowl...NOT!
Cloud • May 6, 2008 4:00 pm
well, would that be worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime trip? For that amount of money, maybe the Olympics would be a better bet--you could go to more than one event.
SteveDallas • May 6, 2008 4:10 pm
Hmm. In past years I would probably have said the ACC Basketball Tournament. (I used to take vacation time from work to watch it.) But it's not as much fun since they added mroe schools.

I think I'll go with Wimbledon.

If your goal is to be at an Important Event, then you're looking at the Superbowl. Possibly the World Series. But either of those would be very boring for somebody who's not a fan of the sport. If you're more interested in something exciting to watch, then the Olympics may be it.
Sundae • May 6, 2008 4:17 pm
It's impossible for me to choose on your behalf, as sport varies so much between our two countries. For me it would definitely be the World Cup final. You don't know who will be playing of course, but the atmosphere would be electric.

Or Ascot Ladies' Day. Heels and a hat and just pray it's not windy!

My ultimate holiday destination would have to be the Tour de France - planning my itinerary to cross paths two or three times over the course of a week. Preferably one of the stages that crosses into Italy, as I've never been to that part of France.
Flint • May 6, 2008 4:36 pm
...to drop a bomb on, killing everyone inside, thus improving humanity? Probably the Super Bowl.
glatt • May 6, 2008 4:44 pm
Maybe, Flint, but not the one with Tom Petty. Better to do the one with Timberlake and Jackson.
lookout123 • May 6, 2008 4:46 pm
As a soccer/football fan I'm supposed to say the World Cup final. But international soccer just doesn't compare for quality and excitement with club soccer IMO. Maybe that is because I'm American and our team is about 3 more World Cups away from even coming close to a respectable performance. I'd rather go to an Arsenal vs a major rival game.
W.HI.P • May 6, 2008 11:32 pm
No doubt about this one:
Tennis, a grand slam.
US Open, Wimbeldon or the French open.
The Australian open isn't as good, but you'd get to see Australia!

It'll cost you a fortune, but it is certainly worth it!

Hey, come on now. Jozy, Edu, Adu, etc.? We've got a chance for a repeat of 2002 within the next 2 World Cups. But though I love our national team more than my club team, I do agree that overall quality and excitement are better on the club level because those players play with each other all year. So yeah, my dream scenario actually takes place in a week and a half in Moscow, the Champions League final. Chelsea, my club team love vs. Man U, the team I couldn't possibly hate more. What I would give to be there...
lookout123 • May 12, 2008 12:42 am
Well, if your club team is Chelsea I can understand why you would prefer international matches. 90 minutes of Chelsea's percentage ball and I want to slit my wrists.;)

I go to our USMNT games when they're out west and I enjoy them, but the quality is nowhere near where it should be.

Edu... ok
Adu... could be great if he'd quit believing he was great
Altidore... head to Europe and get some polish. Skill is abundant
Bradley... Oh yeah
Feilhaber... The makings are there
Demerit... How that fucker Onyewu even gets a start ahead of him I'll never understand.

The future is bright but the national think tank is fucked.
Aliantha • May 12, 2008 12:56 am
I'd choose the mens final at Wimbeldon. I like the tennis. A deciding ashes match would be awesome too.
barefoot serpent • May 12, 2008 1:51 pm
NCAA Final Four (especially if KU is playing ;) )

Already got 4 tix to the 1st round regional in KC!!
Dingleschmutz • May 12, 2008 3:51 pm
I can't even think straight about Feilhaber, any time I try to analyze him, I just think of that rocket on the volley in the Gold Cup last year. Instant man crush.

And don't hate on Chelsea, we'll look prettier after we buy Messi for 160 mil or whatever ;)
lookout123 • May 12, 2008 3:55 pm
As much as I like Messi, he wouldn't last half a season in the EPL. His muscles and tendons are made from wet cardboard. Besides that, he wouldn't fit with the Chelsea style of play. For all the talk of "playing sexy", Chelsea is a team based on power in the middle. Adding one flair player wouldn't change that.
Dingleschmutz • May 12, 2008 4:06 pm
I know, it was a joke. That bid scares me a lot, La Liga isn't the same as the EPL, and he can't stay healthy there. But after watching him outplay Ronaldo in their CL matchup, it's sure an interesting gamble. I mean geez, he's only 20.

Should we continue to annoy everyone by completely derailing this thread, talking about a sport only 3 people on this board care about?
Dingleschmutz • May 12, 2008 4:10 pm
What if we opened this up to "if you could've gone to any sporting event from history, what would it be?"

I was two years away from even being born, and hockey's probably my 4th or 5th favorite sport, but I'd choose Eruzione toppling the Russkies in the 1980 Olympics.
lookout123 • May 12, 2008 4:11 pm
3? You. Me. Dana does a good job trying to care. Richie is a pool fan (whereever he went). WHIP likes money and boring football. (Chelsea supporter apparently). That's 5. See - it's the world's game.
Dingleschmutz • May 12, 2008 4:28 pm
A pool fan? C'mon, it's much more fun to call them Liverpudlians or scousers.
lookout123 • May 12, 2008 4:52 pm
i don't remember if he really was a scouser or just supported the team though. whatever. I often don't use the proper name for supporters. I mean when is the last time I referred to you as Chelscum? Lottery Chav?
Sundae • May 12, 2008 6:24 pm
Hello?
Football fan here too thank you.
Although you probably are best keeping it to the designated thread if that's all you're talking about.

Because the Cellar has never been about thread drift (snigger)
lookout123 • May 12, 2008 6:42 pm
My apologies SG. Now I do recall some past discussion about the League Cup. so there you go, we have 6 fans.
Sundae • May 12, 2008 6:45 pm
That's a quorum.
I motion that the discussion can continue.

Ha, fair enough. If my team had the word "arse" in their name, I wouldn't want to go down that road either ;) Really I just like the term Liverpudlian though. To Americans it sounds like an insult.

No league cup discussions, please. Fuckin' Spurs... I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

What about the . . . Ultimate Fighting Championship I think it's called? In Las Vegas? Not something I can get into, but Daughter No. 1 and SIL are all into that.
Aliantha • May 12, 2008 10:44 pm
The first rule of fight club is, never talk about fight club!

Free money, yes ...I like that very much.
My favorite soccer teams, are Lazio and Lyonnais.
In petty England, yes, I support Chelsea..... always have.

But a soccer fan? Not particularly.

These are my favorite sports by rank:
1)Tennis (Watching and playing)
2)American Football
3)Hockey
4)Baseball
5)Basketball (Coaching)

Soccer would rank next to volleyball and snooker.
Knowledge is another thing.

I've made a fortune on Golf and Horse Racing, it does not mean I enjoy them more than my listed favs.
Dingleschmutz • May 13, 2008 9:23 am
Holy crap, I thought W.HI.P was a gambling tip bot! (srsly).

Sorry dude, I'm an idiot.

Hockey is MUCH better to see in person, so I'd suggest a Stanley Cup Final game. At elast that's what I'd do if I had the fundage and time to make it so.
deadbeater • May 23, 2008 7:20 pm
I choose the Belmont Stakes. At $2 for grandstand, TWO!, it's the cheapest ticket. Who knows, you might actually see a Triple Crown winner in your lifetime.

Of course you realize that the horses are the real athletes.
