April 27, 2008: Planet of the Apes

The Daily Mail, via Neatorama.
The extraordinary image, a world exclusive, was taken in Borneo on the island of Kaja, where apes are rehabilitated into the wild after being rescued from zoos, private homes or even butchers' shops.

This individual had seen locals fishing with spears on the Gohong River.

Although the method required too much skill for him to master, he was later able to improvise by using the pole to catch fish already trapped in the locals' fishing lines.

The image is part of a series taken for a new book, The Thinkers Of The Jungle, which also includes the first photograph of an orangutan swimming.

They lived in captivity... and they're pissed!

do you think his being endangered effects his day to day routine? I mean, like....well,[o-tang] I think i'll eat this new berry i found today.....hope it's not poisonous......oh wait a minute....I'm endangered...better not risk it.[/o-tang]

it may; I'm not sure. The brief review I did on them does not mention fish as a food-- perhaps they have had to be more creative in food gathering as a result of habitat pressures. I do believe it is important to acknowledge the status of endangered animals when we discuss them, though.

He has no habitat pressures, he's on an island that is a protected reserve.
Having watched humans fish, he's trying his hand at it.

so, it's an interesting anomaly; not much help to his species in the long run, though, unless he and his brothers and sisters are given the time and space to expand the behavior

If you look closely, you'll see he's already caught a brown backed banana. It's on his line, just above his head.

This shot just before the 14 foot crocodile showed up and the orangutan went missing.

It might affect his ability to get dates on a Saturday night.

in five seconds, when he's realized he is being photographed, he'll throw down and spear and begin throwing his poop. they can't let us know how smart they really are.

Ah, I see. So, you're saying, "Monkey see, monkey do," is that correct?

;)

So if he learns by watching...and they're endangered... then set them up with some internet porn and we should be swimming in 'tangs.

Why? They'd probably be better than a lot of Chicago drivers.
