Bookworm
I found that this is a good way to keep me occupied. Today, I played
Bookworm instead of...other things.
During the course of the day (one game) I got to Level 25 with 601,950 points... after which I just hit scramble repeatedly to kill the game and get some work done. I wanted to see my rank but it doesn't show you those anymore. I looked it up and someone said Lexographer.
Some things I learned: Bookworm doesn't consider
goto,
exe, or
blog a word. But
fuze,
regs,
doomy, and
sith are, somehow, words.
Go figure. . . .So... . . .
Who has a dazzling high Bookworm score? If this game gives my computer problems, I'm coming to Texas and killing you.
I remember mine was pretty damn high--but then I lost the installation (and accompanying high scores) when we had to wipe the machine awhile back, and I haven't felt like reinstalling to play it again yet.
I did alright...59,000 points.
I haven't played it that much, but Mrs. Dallas has scored 5,962,590. But that's still not very impressive compared to Sister Jean-Marie Smith, a retired nun living at St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa, MS. According to a NY Times article of March 30, 2007, she was up to 34,765,180 when she paused the game to talk to the reporter.
I ordered the full version (20$ for 5 registrations) because you can pause and return to your game. Also, I think you can save a copy of the directory "players/classic" and overwrite the existing file to start over from a saved game point...I haven't tried this yet.
Most Important BOOKWORM Tips:
You WILL NOT get a burning tile in a column when you play more than one tile. If you have to move the board with a small word, play at least two tiles from adjacent columns, and you don't have to worry.
Burning tiles are not ALWAYS a bad thing. Don't freak out right away; scan the board all the way down, there may be a play that you have to wait a few turns for. Also, burning tiles can sometimes burn away stupid letters for you.
There is no time limit. Take your time. If you don't see anything good, take a break and look again, later.

As much a wordsmith as I am, I suck at these kinds of games. I don't know why. I love crosswords,
cryptic crosswords (try one), and many other types of word games, but these kind make me a nervous wreck!
Why does a Super Dictionarian have huge tits?
And Flint, does that cartoon representation resemble you in any way?

These "kind" ...? I don't know what that means. Have you played Bookworm?
Why does a Super Dictionarian have huge tits?
Why not?
And Flint, does that cartoon representation resemble you in any way?
I thought it was a picture of you...
but these kind make me a nervous wreck!
You might like Bookworm... you can take as long as you want to answer. No pressure.
Why does a Super Dictionarian have huge tits?
I can't believe you said that. Why, that's just plain old-fashioned tittism. As if women with big tits didn't deserve to be Super Dictionarians too!!
The cartoon also reminds me of the dark ages in school--one of my teachers was known to punish kids by making them hold up a dictionary in each hand.
These "kind" ...? I don't know what that means. Have you played Bookworm?
Yeah, I played it for the first time about 5 years ago. :eyebrow: Have played often. Not dissin' your game dude...what I mean is that the "find words out of rows and columns of letters" games make me turn into some really stupid person.
FUCK YOU FLINT
I HAVE SOMEWHERE TO BE TOMORROW
I HAVE TO ACTUALLY GET UP IN THE MORNING
AND I JUST SPENT A FUCKING HOUR PLAYING YOUR FUCKING GAME
AND NOW ITS ALMOST THREE AM AND IM STILL UP
FUCKER
Maybe you'll like
this one better Ibram.
I'd just like to say a big thankyou for bringing this delightful, if disturbingly addictive, game to my attention! I just bought the full version (along with Bejewelled 2 and Brain Training) as a birthday pressie for Ma. She loves it. She spent about three hours on it last night lol. It's the perfect game for her, she loves these puzzle types.

now THAT looks like you!
:D
Damn you flint...you reawoke my addiction to this game....only my mom and I used to play it for FREE a few years back...now I suppose I'll have to save up so I can get the full version. Stupid flint. Hmph.
Update. You can definitely save a game point with this file:
C:\Program Files\PopCap Games\Bookworm Deluxe\players\your name\classic

I saved the "classic" file to my flash drive, brought it home, and continued this game on a different machine/different install.
Oooh, I would like a Bookworm Supreme, but hold the sour cream, please.
Level 32 complete on both running versions of this game...
...I like this screenshot better because of the 8-letter word.
Oooh, I would like a Bookworm Supreme, but hold the sour cream, please.
:::ahem::: that's Bookworm Supreme,
Level One. btw here's my best word...
10,000+ points!See, that is why I suck at this game. I would not have found that word. I would have taken "deep" or "peed" for a lot less points.
I always scan for things like "ion" or "ing" that can build longer words. And that path travels through some bonus tiles.
Do you try to set yourself up to get the bonus word (keg, in this instance?)
Mrs. Dallas goes to great lengths to line up the bonus words.
Do you try to set yourself up to get the bonus word (keg, in this instance?)
The bonus word can really screw things up. If you tiptoe around the Ks and Gs on the board, afraid to play them because you want to get that bonus word, then what have you got? A board, full of useless Ks and Gs, that's impossible to make any decent moves on. It's best (in my experience) not to focus on the bonus word, unless all the letters present themselves at the same time, and you can shift the board to line it up.

Note: There
is a directory in the program files where you can edit the bonus word dictionary. I haven't done that because I want to know my best score
without cheating.
That may have been one of my problems, too. I always tried to line up that bonus word. How much is it even worth? Better to take the 8 letter word for 6000 points!

Note: There is a directory in the program files where you can edit the bonus word dictionary. I haven't done that because I want to know my best score without cheating.
How is that cheating? You're using everything available to you. All you're doing is accepting an arbitrary set of constraints. IIRC, you've already moved the bar once when you changed from the free version to the paid version. Different constraints, now you can have longer words and saved games. Still arbitrary. Just like choosing to associate terms like "cheating" with the changes you describe.
Good play though!
How is that cheating?
...
I want my score to reflect what I can achieve on an unaltered version of the game. The concept of "cheating" is in the context of comparing my scores to the scores of other players. The assumption is that the other players are playing with an unaltered bonus word dictionary, which may not be the case, but as an unknown factor I err on the side of this assumption.
I have to admit, this game is really easy. I've got over 3,000 points already. And they keep giving me these cool burning tiles.
Bookworm Supreme, Level Three.
Soon I will break 2 million; but what I really want to know is what comes after the supremes.
2 million, but I'm not a Ronette yet.
I just started playing Bookworm a couple of months ago. Haven't broken 100,000 yet. I am amazed at the capacity for weird 3 letter words in this game. And even some weird 4 letter words too.
Oh, I only play on my cell phone, btw.
Level 36 complete. This is becoming a chore. I want a new, exciting rank!
