Re the top clip - is it funnier if you know who the little camp guy is?
Because otherwise I don't really get it.
It seems they're screaming with laughter because straight men are getting up close & personal with a gay man... WTF?
Shawnee123 • Apr 16, 2008 12:27 pm
But but, it's Richard Simmons, of Sweating to the Oldies fame! I think it's a law you have to laugh at him: he loves it!

Yes. It is funnier if you know about Richard Simmons!!!

I wish I could find another part of that episode, the show ending (that was often hacked off in syndication) where Barney explains to Andy how easy it is to remember dates.

Something like this:

"Take 1776, for example. The first number, one, is easy to remember 'cause it's the first number in the alphabet. Then you got lucky number 7. Then you got 7 again, which is easy because you just remembered 7. Last, there's 6. 7 minus 1 is 6. 1776!"

Andy replies "wouldn't it be easier to just remember 1776?"

Barney gets snappy "well if you want to do everything the easy way you'll never learn anything!"

Have I Got News For You - Christmas Special
Long clip but quite quickfire wit.
Not the funniest it's ever been (it can make me cry) but a decent introdution.
Of course the really amusing thing is that the guest host - Boris Johnson - could potentially become our Mayor on May 1st. I am not voting for him, give me Red Ken any day.

For the record, the short fat, balding, smug man on the far left is Ian Hislop - editor of Private Eye (satirical UK magazine) and pretty much my ideal man. And yes, I would.

All good fun.
British Comedy Awards 2008.

Get a load of people involved in comedy (performers, producers, writers) etc in one room and with free booze. They stopped it going out live on the BBC years ago thanks to a colourful joke Julian Clary made about fisting. ITV didn't learn.

Olivia Lee presents the best new British TV comedy award for The InBetweeners. Never watched it I'm afraid. It was on E4 (satellite) at a time I didn't even have terrestrial.

Iain Morris takes the mike, and the abuse from Keven Bishop. He (Bishop) has already shouted rude words during a a previous recorded acceptance speech by Ricky Gervais.

In the section shown, Bishop is up for an award for which the InBetweeners wins. He is therefore peeved. The bottle is POM - a pomegranete drink. Left handed! What a star!

I was thinking about Teri Garr today, what a great comedic actress she is, and how Letterman would have her on the show even when she wasn't plugging anything. So, wonderful internet it is, I found Tootsie in its entirety on youtube. Luckily, this part starts right before the scene with Sandy (Garr) where Michael breaks up with her. Sandy enters about 1:22. The preceding part with Bill Murray is great, too. What a cast!

I love that img, and Billy Mays was amazing to parody.

Oh, and he's not dead. His wife had found a mixture of Oxi Clean and Orange Glo in his car. Apparently she revived him with it and left a fake body, made of course fully out of mighty putty because it's easy with the green to white technology, laying on the ground to fake his death. He now resorts happily on an island in the pacific, where he snacks on mini burgers and wears a Snuggie all day long.

For my contribution to this thread, I always found this movie exceptionally hilarious:

A friend of mine recently introduced me to a couple of web based comedy series (3-6 minute webisodes). First one I got into was 'The Guild' - a comedy series based around an online gaming guild, very funny. Then I watched 'The Legend of Neil' - Neil plays Legend of Zelda and ends up being transported into that world as an elf, again very funny.

But what i want to share with anyone who hasn't come across it yet is 'Chad Vader: Dayshift manager' - the story of Darth's younger and less successful brother. I just sat and watched the entire first series in one chunk. The first episode is ok. Quite funny. But I wondered if maybe it was a one joke deal and wouldn't sustain across a whole series (of 5 minute webisodes). Actually it got funnier as it went on. I am now totally addicted. I will watch season two tomorrow night :P

Here is the first webisode. Enjoy! :

It was '98 when she was on Bill Maher talking about dabbling in it when she was younger.
She was born in '69. So she was 29 - Just sayin.

Here it is...

what are her specific plans? Does she have any?

No moreso than the rest of them. The plan is to get as much money and power while in the spotlight. She's got rent to pay after all.
Shawnee123 • Oct 8, 2010 12:55 pm
29, 30. What's the diff, biff?

Way far different than the 20 years ago she keeps saying, and the innocent new budding adult she was, she keeps insinuating. SNORT. I don't give a fuck about the witch thing. Really I don't. I bet she didn't inhale either. ;)

No, sorry, won't go for that one: she can't even pretend to HAVE any kind of plan. NO PLAN. Nothing except: we Merkins are sooooooo upset and sooooo tired of it all.

Bah. You're not really going to poke me on THIS one, are you? Your complaints and your defenses of politicians are just as non-committal and nonspecific as O'Donnell's plans for the FUTURE (because, you know, she repeatedly says her campaign isn't about the past, it's about the future.)

I don't care if she promises flying cars, and could actually produce them. She's a showpiece, empty and shallow and devoid of any kind of political knowledge or even charisma.

Yeah, you lump them all in together: I contend that even some pasty fat drunk republicans have had an idea or two.

A little stand-up from Henning Wehn, Germany's 'comedy ambassador' to Britain.

Found it very difficult to find clips that show him; most of his exposure here is via Radio 4. I adore him, he is so dry. On the radio panel shows he can always be relied upon to bring a strange but funny slant to stuff.

Just a word of explanation: the compere for this show is Al Murray: Pub Landlord. He is played as a comic persona of a particular brand of nasty , Daily Mail reading, misogynistic, British patriotism.

Bear in mind, the new Family Feud is billed as a daytime "family" show on ABC, one of the more conservative networks. An American host on primetime television (that is, with a wider audience appeal, and in the evening when someone other than retirees and young mothers are home from work) would have taken a joint reference completely in stride, not even worth a second comment most likely.

extraordinary!

this is *not* her perfoming, only her music and lyrics. But this kind of mashup is called an AMV, Anime Music Video, and this particular one has taken very specific samples from the series Death Note, and set them to this music. Misa, a character in the anime series, is ... clingy and determined and somewhat unstable. The song is a priceless expression of her character. Note how precisely the clips display the text of the lyrics. I love it! Anime geek note, there's a scene "nipping at your heels" where the dog is not from Death Note, but from Cowboy Bebop, my (one of my top) favorite anime series. Enjoy!

the lyrics:

Christine Lavin wrote:
(spoken)

'This song is called "Regretting What I Said to You When You
Called Me 11:00 On a Friday Morning to Tell Me that at 1:00
Friday Afternoon You're Gonna Leave Your Office, Go Downstairs,
Hail a Cab to Go Out to the Airport to Catch a Plane to Go Skiing
in the Alps for Two Weeks, Not that I Wanted to Go With You, I
Wasn't Able to Leave Town, I'm Not a Very Good Skier, I Couldn't
Expect You to Pay My Way, But After Going Out With You for Three
Years I DON'T Like Surprises!!"

'And it's subtitled "A Musical Apology"

'In this song I attempt to take back everything I said while
standing in a phone booth on the corner of 49th and 3rd.'

I didn't mean it when I said, 'I hope
The cable in the elevator snaps
When you step on board.'
And I was joking when I said,
'I hope you crack your head
And get mangled by the downstairs revolving doors.'

And I was kidding when I said, 'I hope the
#103 bus
Hits and makes a pancake out of you.'

I'm sorry...
I'm sorry...
Isn't it amazing what a woman in love will do?

And I really don't want to see your taxi on the 59th Steet Bridge
Flip over
And crash through the rail.
And I'd feel bad if at the airport you were
Mistaken for a local sex offender,
Arrested, beaten up, and thrown in jail.

And I really don't want to see you getting radiation poisoning
From the metal detector that all passengers on
Foreign and domestic flights must walk through.

I'm sorry...
Forgive me...
For all the mean things I said to you.

You thought I didn't have a temper.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, surprise!
But I really don't want to see you
Dismembered by the marijuana sniffing dogs
When a simple little nipping would suffice,
Would suffice.

And I'm sorry that I said 'I hope
The plane explodes in mid-air
As it carries you away from me.'
And I'm sorry that I said,
'I hope you break both legs
On the mountain while you ski.'

And I'm sorry for all the nasty things
I said about your mother
Even though we both know they're true.

I'm sorry...
Forgive me...
I'm swallowing my pride,
I'd feel so guilty if you died!
Oh, I'm sorry,
But I'm still mad at you.

I've been getting back into Never Mind the Buzzcocks just lately. For those that haven't heard of it, NMtB is a British, music based, panel quiz. It's been going for about 17 years. It used to have a regular host and two regular team captains, but the past couple of years they've been using the 'Guest Host' format. I much prefer the guest hosts to regular hosts, because the show has a different feel each week, depending on the host, whilst still feeling like the same show.

So, here's a clip of one of my favourite recent shows, hosted by David Walliams (of Little Britain). The two team captains Noel Fielding and Phil Jupitas (they sit at the centre of each team) are the only two regulars.

To explain Walliams a little: he is a straight guy who is quite effeminate and an occasional transvestite, whose comedy partner (Matt Lucas) is gay. The press have had an unhealthy obsession with Walliams' sexuality for most of the time he's been famous. Fuelled by the fact he'll flirt with anyone, male or female. On the one hand he has been linked to a stream of famously beautiful It-Girls, whilst also appearing to be 'gayer than Christmas' as one reviwer put it. He was always cagey about answering those questions saying that it shouldn't matter. He's recently married a top Swedish model.
footfootfoot • May 8, 2011 12:48 pm
he's very funny.
DanaC • May 8, 2011 12:49 pm
I've been on a bit of a Walliams kick just lately. That's what got me back into watching the Buzzcocks.

He's written a few children's books. One of them, The Boy in the Dress, has been nominated for all sorts of awards. The interviews he did around it are really interesting.

I was thinking about the old days working at the bar. We had the Cyclone pinball machine, the greatest pinball game OF ALL TIME. The pinball machine always stayed on, to keep high scores. So every now and then as we were setting up in the mornings, for lunch, the pinball machine would make some of its noises.

It'd be dead quiet and you'd hear "HEY YOU, WITH THE FACE!"

And when we'd go other places with the owner he'd say out of nowhere "Hey YOU with the face!"

So I googled it and here's the game. No hey you with the face but it sure brings back memories.

Your post reminds me of a line from Being Human. One of the nurses seeks clarification from George about a note on someone's medical card, showing what time they're to have their next meds, because she can't read the other nurse's handwriting. George tells her to ask her colleague, but as the nurse tells him, she's gone for a drink with his mate. 'What mate?' he asks her, 'Oh, y'know,' she says, 'Him with the face'.

In the 'Good Music on YouTube' thread, I've mentioned the group Blackberry Smoke. One of their songs (Good One Coming On) contains the verse:

"...throw in Ray Wylie Hubbard,
sing along to "Redneck Mother",
any blues I had before are gone..."

Well, I didn't know who he was, and had never heard of the song, which is actually "Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother". So...To the YouTube!!!

While looking for Ray and the redneck song, I came across this vid of Ray Wylie Hubbard explaining what went on to cause this song to be written. The story is told at Jerry Jeff Walker's Birthday Bash a few years ago (I think).

It gets funnier every time I watch it.

Every great story should start: "One time we was at this hootenanny..."

Yah:) They were on good form this week.

One slight note about that show: normally, the two regulars (Ian Hislop and Paul Merton) are very courteous to the guests. Particularly, I think if the guest in question is the only woman on the show, or the only non-performer/comedian. Going for the jugular like that is most unusual. I certainly haven't seen them react with such genuine anger for a very long time.

The comments say it was 1 month ago. But it looked more like what I
would have expected back at the time of the tsunami from Japan.

In any case, losing a Canon camera is something of a tragedy.

P.S. Those "roller" logs in the Oreogn surf are killers... 1-3 people each year
... stay away, far away from them !

Clodfobble • Jan 14, 2012 8:06 am
Are more logs falling in the surf each year, or is it the same logs, too big to catch before they roll back out to sea, and someday a gnarly old seafarer is going to take the local sherif and a scientist out to catch them, only to realize too late that they're gonna need a bigger boat?

I certainly don't want to make light of someone's phobia. I realize people are irrationally scared of many things (for me, as most of you know it's spiders.)

But this woman is afraid of snowmen and they open the curtain and there is the creepiest freaking snowman just standing there, smiling. And what is up with the horse?

I've been trying to find recent clips of '10 O'Clock Live' because it's been on good form the last few weeks. Trouble is there mostly Channel 4 so won't play outside UK.

I did manage to find a clip or two from last year.

here's one of the Listen to David Mitchell segments:

I admire all of them.

I had a huge crush on Lauren Laverne when she was in Kenickie - she was interviewed and I thought, hang on, she's a smart girl. She'd be great not only to go down the pub with, but also to go to a pub quiz with. Unlike say, Geri Halliwell or Kerry Katona [RIP].
I was gutted that she was straight, it made me less interesting.

But I adore Charle Brooker. Mostly because the man can be a cunt. And because I don't always agree with him.

This is different to the way I adore Rory McGrath, who I think pretends to be but might actually be a misogynist.
Or Ian Hislop who is elitist.
Or Frank Skinner who is a man-slut even though he is Catholic.

Hmmmm. Even my fantasies are all bad choices...

Thank You Hater!

Well hello Friend.
Mr. Insightful.
Thank you for your comments on my little YouTube clip.

Most people say

But you're right; how do I sleep at night? I am a massive prig.

They call you hater,

But I say Thank You,

I love the way

You know we'd be too dazzled by your cinematic vision.

But you're there,

where you teach us just like Jesus but while wanking like a gibbon.

I'm really sure
that if I met you,
you probably wouldn't rape me like you probably thought you would.

We are like that.
I really get you.
You're right about that laughing kid, he is a total "cnut".

Here are some other people you've given your brilliant insights to.

Hiya! You said because I only play black characters I'm being "racist toward black people." So, thanks for that!

You said, "dawn porter u make me ashamed too be a woman." Thanks!

You said, "his mother must be so prowd she can have a bottle or 2 shuved up her for bringing such a TWAT into the world." WOW!

You said I was a "steeming pile of shit" Thank you!

You said I'm "NOT funny and u never will be" !!!

You said "does helen lederer remind u of miss piggy?" Oohooh, thank you.

You said "get a grip u spastaztic mong. u realy are a TWAT have a word with urself." Thanks!

You said "this cunt should be raped in the eyes" I can't wait!

You said "u black basterd ur films are shit and if i ever see u on the street i'm gonna cave ur head in" Thanks man, I look forward to that.

Hi! Me again.

You wished me "cancar",
and misspelled cancer.
But I know that it's a metaphor you hoped that I would grow.

Just like the tumor
you hoped would kill me,
inside the tits on which you said you'd also like a go.

You said that "girls
shouldnt do funny."
But you'd fuck me double hard and let your mates go after you.

Oh, what a line.
You lovely honey.
Are you ahny harmony? Oh join the queue.

Some might say you're a...
Sexually aggressive, racist homophobe,
misogynistic, cowardly, illiterate

But if it wasn't for you,
my darling,
I would never have written this tune.

Some might say
you're so vain,
but this song is all about you.

That's only because you don't read Merc's threads, in which [strike]Fair&Balanced[/strike] Redux acted as the "Obama apologist" ala the TDS bit.

Partisanship: it makes smart people less informed!
DanaC • Jun 22, 2012 10:06 am
In fairness, I don't read very many politics and current affairs threads. I occasionally dip in, but that's all. And that cuts across the board. Specific issues interest me, or specific thread titles draw me in, but I am as likely to ignore a thread from someone like Lamplighter as I am from someone like Merc, unless it relates to an area of particular interest to me. I am also just as likely to read a Merc thread as I am a Lamplighter thread on the same grounds.

Some of the longer running theads (Obamanation for example) I dip in and out of but don' read all of the back and forth.

But ya know. You've got a great stereotype there, so I'd just run with it.

[eta] Having followed your link, I now recall why I didn't read it. I assumed by the title that it was to do with the Fast and Furious movie series. Had it been entitled 'US sells arms to Mexican Drug Dealers in a botched operation and then one of the guns is used to shoot a US Border Agent, and now Obama is using his Executive Privelege for the first time to crush any investigation into the affair' I'd have clicked....but it's a tad unwieldy as titles go :p

What I like about the Daily Show is this: most of the news that comes from the US seems divided into two camps, one which is wholly critical of the left and one which is wholly apologetic for it.

Jon Stewart is unashamedly partisan in his views. He is left leaning liberal. But that doesn't stop him from tearing into the left politicians, or the left leaning news.

I don't trust the criticisms that come from Fox News. Too many of them have been shown to be wilful misunderstanding, or outright fabrications. Likewise I don't trust the analysis of the left leaning news. They seem to take it as their role to balance out the right leaning news, and so are reluctant to stick the boot in when Obama does something shitty.

Dan, this is a very astute observation on your part. I find it helpful to also keep in mind the motivations, especially the financial motivations, (as much as I can understand them) of the sources of such criticisms, reporting, analyses, etc.

Deep Throat wrote:

DanaC • Jun 22, 2012 8:05 pm
Speaking of following the money...

Youse guys over there probably aren't aware of the great big legal tax avoidance scandal that erupted this week and ended up centring around none other than our loveable scamp of an entertainer, Jimmy Carr.

In a nutshell: investigative journalism blows open the existence of several high value tax avoidance schemes, in which people end up paying around 1% tax on massive incomes. All completely legal, and very shady. Of several figures named initially, Jimmy Carr's was the headline news.

His initial response to a heckler who surprised him about it at a gig was that he pays what he has to and not a penny more. Not an unreasonable stance given that this is the basis on which the British tax system in fact works.

Next thing is a bunch of politicians decide to weigh in on the issue, and the Prime Minister ends up on TV lambasting Carr for being immoral. Not illegal you understand, but immoral. Next day when Gary Barlow (a supporter of the Conservative party) was also named and various folk began suggesting that he be stripped of his newly awarded honour (OBE) the PM declined to be drawn on individual cases.
His suggestion that this all makes Carr a hypocrite because he once made a joke in a political satire show about large banks avoiding tax...is well and good, until you take account of the massive fortune Cameron's own father made managing off shore tax haven schemes:p Some might say this is a rather silly can of worms for the PM to open, given how many of his close allies, friends, party colleagues and relatives are likely to be involved in the same schemes. Watch this space to see where this one goes.

Anyway, Carr having thought about it (and his future career no doubt) decided to take it on the chin. he apologised. Explained without justifying (his financial advisor asked him if he wanted to pay less tax he knew a way that was completely legal, did he want to do it?) and described his decision to do so as a 'terrible error of judgement' pulled out of the (entirely legal) scheme and promised to conduct his financial affairs more responsibly in future.

So....why am I talking about this in the funny vids thread? Because this week's 8 Out of 10 Cats, hosted by Carr was fucking hysterical. His colleagues on the show obviously made the most of it. Carr handled it well. This is no half-baked mea culpa that throws the emphasis of the blame elsewhere. He has been dishing it out for years. It's nice to know he can take it too.

However, I *did* hear this story and I applaud his decision to do what I consider the right thing. The laws that permit such behavior. We have laws like that here, and they're broken here too. Being able to take part in a society without paying for what it takes to run such a society is wrong; Mr Carr is doing the right thing.

What I like is that, he could quite reasonably have put all the blame on his accountant's advice. he could quite easily have defended himself on the grounds that others are doing the same thing and yet he has been picked on for naming and shaming (like the MPs all did when they got caught with their noses so deep in the trough it'd be months before they saw sunlight again).

Instead he went the other way. His accountant didn't advise him to do this, rather he offered it as a way of legally minimizing tax and Jimmy took it. A decision he characterises as a 'really poor judgement call'.

I've seen other stars go through similar. Often comedians funnily enough. People who get caught out on tax evasion and then have to ride out the storm, or people like Angus Deayton getting caught with coke and prossies. There's usually a mix of contrition and poor me about the response.

I dont think I've ever seen anyone do such a good job of damage limitation in a situation like this. It's a fucking master class in how to do it.

He has now come out fighting a bit with regards to Cameron sticking his oar in. I think the public response has made it clear that it is perceived as unfair and a pot calling the kettle black. Worse because Carr has no part in setting the tax rules and has never held himself up to be moral or even particularly political. If it'd have been Brigstocke this would be a very different affair.

So, yeah. he had a bit of a pop at Cameron during his Stockport gig this week, whilst still absolutely not shifting the blame anywhere but himself. Clever.

I don't even remember what it was that sent me off looking at The New Statesman clips on the toob, but anyways, whilst I was doing so I came across this little gem. Seems strangely relevant today given it is from the 1980s.

Alan B'stard MP (the New Statesman of the title) has gone to give a speech at his old school. For reasons I cannot recall he is high as a kite at this point. I think having accidentally smoked something vicious. And so the speech is not only inappropriate for a school audience, but also uncharacteristically honest:

glatt • Nov 20, 2012 8:22 am
That's amusing. I like how he does that little cock of the head each time at the exact same point.

I saw this the other day, and now, on seeing it again, I'm really curious about the story behind this video. Somebody took a lot of time to make this video. Somebody with access to all these clips. It could be someone who DVRs the news at home, but that would be a lot of work. I have a suspicion that it's someone from the TV station. Maybe it's simple boredom and a desire by one of the video editors to make a funny little movie, or maybe someone had a grudge with old Gustavo there and is trying to make him look dumb.

Reminds me of some famous anchor woman who was having a temper tantrum on camera before a broadcast, and somebody put that temper tantrum to music.

you flatter me, man.

i am in a good mood tonight, this contributes to that mood, but not phamacologically.

i thought I'd post the original near the parody so they can be compared more easily. i think the parody is *first class*, they put in a great deal of effort to match it to the original. though the subject material is different, this strikes me like the high fidelity parodies from Weird Al Yankovic. Bullseye musicianship, razor sharp lyrics, and a sense of humor that should be registered as a lethal weapon.

I'd love to hear your impressions of West Wing as you watch it some. I loved it back in the day, but I wonder if it holds up. Seems to me like it would get kind of dated. I remember everything in the world got so much more serious after 9/11 and thought West Wing had a hard time staying relevant after that. But it was still real good.
infinite monkey • Feb 19, 2013 2:06 pm
It's been my impression so far that it does seem dated. Like it paved the way for so many types of shows like it and those shows get grittier and grittier.

But I like it so far. Just watched a few episodes. I love Allison Janney as an actress and I'll take any Sheen or Estevez you got. I did notice a Renee Estevez in the credits and it is Martin's daughter and Charlie and Emilio and Ramon's sister.

And Rob Lowe had drinks at the Country Club in my town and I could've met him but I was too shy and he also was seen at The Spot in Sidney with his grandpa. Grandpa passed away some years ago, but Rob spent a lot of time with him.

Do all the characters change at some point?

We watched it, very funny. The pacing was frequently weird, but just when we'd start to think things were really getting too slow, some unexpected joke would make us cackle out loud. It was kind of like a series of sketch comedies where each scene just happened to be related to the previous one.

For the uninitiates, Buzzcocks is a long running music based panel game. The only regulars are the two team captains: Phil Jupitus and Noel Fielding (both very funny), their team mates and the show host are different every week.

This episode was a particularly funny one. Richard Ayoade as guest host. I love him, he's brilliant.

One of our favorites is the Meerkats. We had no idea that it was riffing on the apprentice or who lord sugar was. In looking for a clip and googling lord sugar I discovered the reference. Still funny, though.

The kids walk around saying "Andrew, with regret, you're tired."

In memory of John Fortune, who died this week. With his passing we lose not just his satirical mind, but the amazing double act of John Bird and John Fortune. And, too, with Rory Bremner, the brilliant Bremner, Bird and Fortune, a weekly satirical show that shone a light onto the darker side of politics from the late 90s til 2010, and which many people had hoped would make a return one day.

The Long Johns, were a series of parody interviews, in which one of the Johns (Bird or Fortune) would take on the role of the interviewee, who was always called George Parr - though George Parr was a different person each time. Sometimes a military general, other times a politician, or a banking executive - and on one occasion an African Dictator. The other John would interview as himself. Mostly Fortune would be the interviewer and Bird would would play George Parr. But they did swap roles sometimes.

From time to time they'd play with the format and have the two men as friends talking in a pub.

Here's a Long Johns skit from the run up to the Iraq War - exploring the utter unpreparedness of the British Army for a desert conflict.

On changes to the criminal justice system:

And probably their best known skit, originally part of the 'Silly Money' special edition of Bremner, Bird and Fortune, and performed here on The South Bank Show:

Ooooooooh. I love collies.

[eta] that was brilliant lol. I've sent a link to Ma. Her Nelle is an unknown cross, but we reckon border collie and white German Shepherd. She totally does the collie herding walk.

Bearded collies do something a little different but closely related. They don't slink down to the ground quite like that. They're used sometimes for sheep, but they were originally cattle droving dogs. Much more barking with a beardie :P

The way they communicated with each other there was fucking amazing.
Carruthers • Jan 11, 2014 10:23 am
They're great dogs, aren't they? A friend who works on a local farm has her third Collie and it's such an enthusiastic and intelligent dog.
It will spot sheep half a mile away and take no notice of whatever other treats or diversions may be closer.
DanaC • Jan 11, 2014 10:33 am
Ha!

The cleverest dogs in the pack, are border collies.

Bearded collies (I have a beardie :)) aren't quite as intense as borders. Working beardies are probably closer in intelligence and focus, but the ratio of working:show is much more weighted towards show lines.

But even a show line bearded collie, is the cleverest dog I've ever owned. All the collie breeds are clever.

Has this show been mentioned?

Based on the award-winning and wildly popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of inebriated storytellers and top actors and comedians, travels across the country to reenact the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

it steals the script from Fox News, but in a calmer, more intelligent tone and accent. that's pretty cool. I like listening to the little girl, she's not out of control, she's upset with dad, and listening to her chastise? him, accuse him, her tone is unmistakable even if her pronunciation is a bit difficult to follow. she appeals to mom with a completely different tone, she's careful to track her two complaints about dad, the taking of the pop and the taking of the pictures. it's not a tantrum, she's making herself heard, and trying to make herself understood.

I love seeing them grow up. she's really using all her tools here. it makes me wonder what kind of scenes she's seen modeled for her to come across this way in this kind of situation. pretty cool video.

That was hilarious. Pilau used to like playing with balloons. He'd jump about as I batted it for him. Then he'd chase it along with his nose and try to bite it. It always ended the same way. It would explode in his face and he'd jump back startled, and stand there for about 15 seconds blinking furiously.

Love Song...

Take your girlie to the movies,
If you can’t make love at home;
There’s no little brother there who always squeals;
You can say an awful lot in seven reels;

Take your lessons at the movies,
And have love scenes of your own,
When the picture’s over and it’s time to leave,
Don’t forget to brush the powder off your sleeve;

Take your girlie to the movies,
If you can’t make love at home.

I was torn between putting this in here, or in documentaries - because it is a documentary-ish about a comedy partnership.

I'm in the middle of watching it now, but I paused to post :P

So, if you like Stephen Fry and you like Hugh Laurie, this is fun. To Brits they are known mainly as comedy partners - for Merkins not familiar with pre-House Hugh Laurie, my find this illuminating.

This is not uproarious, though there are some LoL moments - it's a gentle but endearing look at two very talented men, they're place within British comedy and a friendship of 30 years.

This was made a few years ago when Laurie was still Dr House.

It was shown across several nights I think and of course it had ad breaks, so there's a bit of recapping every so often:

I like when they are sitting talking together, they have such a clear bond. The clips of various comedy sketches are funny, and the way comedy was in the process of changing is groovy to watch.

I'd caught bits of this on the news, so I was aware of it, but I hadn't listened to it in any depth.

Wow. I mean - fucking hell. This does not inspire a great deal of confidence. But it is very funny, in a comedy car-crash kind of a way. It's like a scene from a British sit-com where the primary goal is to make you cringe back into your seat in embarrassment for the protagonist, even as you are laughing at his incompetent antics (the original Office for instance, or In the Thick of It)

I just can not like John Oliver. I just want to slap him. If he said to me "Hey Grav, ol' chap, have a hundred dollars, 'ere ya go.", I'd still want to slap him. Not even an angry "You motherfucker!"-type slap. Just a not-quite-casual-"You wanker!"-kinda-way.

That is an excellent line.

I also love this scene. This is from the movie In the Loop - a satire on the lead up to the Iraq war - in this case an unnamed middle east country. It had a pretty reasonable US cinema release for an independent British film - so for a lot of the audience this was their first introduction to Malcolm Tucker - this is from the first scene in the film

*note - in the movie Chris Addison plays a different, but very similar, character to the one he plays in the series. This is also his first meeting with Tucker

I'm ever so slightly addicted to this channel. It's called Lost in the Pond and is a series of vlogs and question/answer vids by a guy from the north of England who lives in the US with his American wife of 10 years.

He also has a website I believe - and given he's been doing this for some time, this posting may be old news to others - but I have only recently discovered his youtube channel.

He's really funny.

Just don't refer to the women's bike in the basement without the cross bar, because you'll be corrected on how bikes don't have genders.

I went to the absolutely massive rally in DC on Saturday, and the kids running the thing are more impressive than most adults I know. This generation coming up is going to be just fine. More than just fine. They are going to fix the shit our generations are leaving for them.

Sure,

When J's kid went to college, there was a course offered on protest. You could get part of your credit for the course by attending one. It's part of the university tradition, now.

this post is offered without bias; i got college credit for bowling, once, because a powerful phys ed department needed to justify itself
glatt • Mar 26, 2018 10:14 am
she got course credit last semester for writing a letter to a paper that gets published. She wrote a letter about air pollution levels next to RT 66 in Arlington, and this was at a time that the highway was being opened up to single driver cars willing to pay a toll instead of just carpoolers. So the paper was looking for letters related to the highway. It was perfect timing. she had taken a high school class the year before where they went out and measured air quality by the highway and at other locations, so she had real data to cite.

That's when I noticed that many of the letters written to the local paper were by college students. Presumably also looking for course credit.

Unfortunately, for reasons I can't really fathom, there are great swathes of film and TV that have just passed me by, so I shall have to make an attempt to catch up.

I think that there's a box set of all three of the above films so I might make a contribution to Amazon's profits in the near future.
