it's like when you stare at a lightbulb then close your eyes

lumberjim • Apr 10, 2008 1:49 am
I see this afterimage with my left eye. 2 days now....and it seems like my vision is somewhat distorted right there too. kind of ...bulge ish.

its a blue disc with a dark center about the size of my retina, but slightly lower than center, so it 'runs away' when i try to focus on it.....like a floater. When i close my eyes, it's bright blue/green or yellow. if i try to see it with eyes open, it's purple or maroon.

hope it goes away....it's a little bit annoying.
Sundae • Apr 10, 2008 6:29 am
Give it another day then go to your doctor or an optician.
I only get vision occlusion when I am having or about to have a migraine - having it for more than a day could be a symptom of something more concerning.

From here
The reason why you are advised not to ignore symptoms of sudden increase in the number of floaters or flashes of light especially if accompanied by subjective reduction in vision (cloud or curtain in vision) is that these symptoms signify an acute posterior vitreous detachment. There could be an associated retinal tear which can lead to a retinal detachment. Therefore you should have an immediate eye examination to rule out any retinal involvement. A dilated fundus examination is required. Another examination will be performed after 4 to 6 weeks if the first examination is normal.

Although it made me smile because "floater" means something different to me :)

Does it seem to be fixed in the same place? In other word when you move your eye left, does it move left too? If so it sounds very much like the retinal hemorrhage I had a few years back. Either way I'd see an ophthalmologist ASAP.
glatt • Apr 10, 2008 10:22 am
Check it out today. If it's a detached retina, you need it taken care of right away.
LabRat • Apr 10, 2008 10:42 am
Yeah, and then add more fiber to your diet.
Clodfobble • Apr 10, 2008 12:26 pm
What glatt said. See an eyedoctor today, before the weekend. Detached retinas can go to full blindness in that eye very, very quickly. My eyedoctor has told me before to call him at home in the middle of the night if I started having visual symptoms like the one you're describing.
Flint • Apr 10, 2008 12:35 pm
Don't be a douchebag, call the doctor today. . . . ...and...then add more fiber to your diet.

Humor has its place and all that, but have you made a real appointment yet? This is serious.
Trilby • Apr 11, 2008 10:01 am

it's like when you stare at a lightbulb then close your eyes

There's a name for that, as you might expect. It's called a phosphene. Have you been stimulating your visual cortex or retina in some way? You might want to stop it.

Good luck at the doctor.
Razzmatazz13 • Apr 11, 2008 11:27 am
Yeah....I'd have problems with my visual cortex being overstimulated if I lived with jinx too.

Reowr ;)
lumberjim • Apr 11, 2008 11:08 pm
so....i'm going to live at least until tuesday. i have a follow up test with a specialist. it's a localized retinal edema. the pics of my eye show a shadow opposite where i see the shape. the dr said it's most likely some fluid under the retina.
could be blood or just fluid. sigh. oh, and i COULD see better with some light prescription glasses if I wanted to.

I think spexx is an optometrist anyway (sorry if I'm wrong) which means he works with fitting glasses & related issues, not actual diseases of the eye.

Glad you made it to the dr. It sucks that there is something there, but at least it wasn't something where they had to whisk you off into surgery right away.
LabRat • Apr 14, 2008 10:47 am
hey LJ, you need to sheck out that glasses site that glatt used and post some pics for us :D

I wrote about an online glasses place in your thread about shopping online. You can submit a photo of yourself to model the frames on.

That would be funny as shit if lumberjim towered over his customers, glaring at them with those $$$$ contacts.

central serous chorioretinopathy (cscr)
glatt • Apr 15, 2008 4:44 pm
Most patients recover normal vision without treatment in three or four months.

Excellent!
lumberjim • Apr 15, 2008 5:03 pm
yeah....the Dr was all 'yeah, seen it a million times, no biggie' about it.

and you can see thru my head right now:

lumberjim • Apr 19, 2008 1:48 pm
more defined, and shaped a little different lately.
Cloud • Apr 19, 2008 2:20 pm
I'm sure that's annoying as hell.
lumberjim • Apr 19, 2008 2:38 pm
i wouldn't say annoying as yet..... usually i see right past it and don't even notice it. If I close my right eye, it's plainly visible, and there is a mild distortion of detailed, high contrast shapes (like these words I'm typing right now) but with both eyes open, I don't notice it unless I'm actively looking for it. I'm hoping that the change in shape is indicative of the area healing and getting smaller.
Sundae • Apr 19, 2008 7:12 pm
ummmmm - you might just be adapting to it
Either way, if it affects you less it's all good news
monster • Apr 19, 2008 8:55 pm
OMG I get those occasionally. they never last very long, though, a couple of hours tops and are usually when i'm very tired. perhaps i'll take it more seriously next time.
SteveDallas • Apr 19, 2008 10:46 pm
I don't think it's the same thing if it only lasts a couple hours... I had a similar pattern (mine was a retinal hemorrhage) and it was there for days and days before it started to clear.

Mega-obvious disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. Duh.
xoxoxoBruce • Apr 20, 2008 1:21 pm
But did you play doctor in your youth?
