March 11, 2008: China's Cat Cleaning

From the Daily Mail...

Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around.

Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city.

The cull comes in the wake of a government campaign warning of the diseases cats carry and ordering residents to help clear the streets of them.

Cat owners, terrified by the disease warning, are dumping their pets in the streets to be picked up by special collection teams.

Paranoia is so intense that six stray cats -including two pregnant females - were beaten to death with sticks by teachers at a Beijing kindergarten, who feared they might pass illnesses to the children.

China's leaders are convinced that animals pose a serious urban health risk and may have contributed to the outbreak of SARS - a deadly respiratory virus - in 2003.

Well, they do have to feed all those athletes and tourists.

Wonders never cease in CN.

Remember they had a big dog round up last year. They just showed up and demanded everyone's dogs. Then they came back late at night and made loud noises so they could zero in on any dog that barked. Killed'em all.

I see now the other shoe has dropped.
auzmericans • Mar 11, 2008 7:42 am
That is crazy, just looking at that picture makes me sad.

I mean, i'm not really a cat lover, but thats just cruel. I do have a cat, that I didn't ask for, was just kinda, thrust upon me, but now I love her and it just makes me feel bad inside looking at those poor cats in the picture.
val5150 • Mar 11, 2008 8:59 am
So much needless pain could be saved, if only people would spay and neuter. These domestic animals all live to serve us one way or another, why must we be irrisponsible about serving them in return?
Trilby • Mar 11, 2008 9:34 am
Hi, auzmericans and val5150.

welcome to the cellar.

I hate the way the Chinese treat animals...but, then, look at the way they treat people... :(
spudcon • Mar 11, 2008 9:38 am
Those that don't learn from history are bound to repeat it. Back during the "Cultural Revolution," cats were proclaimed part of the "decadent western culture." They slaughtered lots of them before the mice and rats started out populating the people, so they stopped. It's gonna be interesting to watch the rat races as a new olympic sport.
Shawnee123 • Mar 11, 2008 9:40 am
Maybe they could take their Olympic profits and use them toward public education, spaying and neutering, and the development of more humane ways to rid themselves of their feral cat population. Nah, they'll just invest in more lead paint. Let's send more money their way! :mad2:
LabRat • Mar 11, 2008 9:53 am
Interesting indeed, spudcon.
Sheldonrs • Mar 11, 2008 10:00 am
Gosh, but China is KNOWN for their forward-thinking advancement of the rights of all living things.
Cloud • Mar 11, 2008 10:05 am
this, after they killed all the dogs for fear of rabies!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5233704.stm

They really don't like pets there!

absolutely abominable cruelty. Don't they realize people would rather see stray cats around than contemplate this abhorrent slaughter?

The quoted text of the article says the opposite, that the people want this to happen. They are putting their own beloved pet cats out on the street to be picked up by these guys because they are afraid the cats will make them sick and kill them.

Unless by "people" you mean Westerners watching from abroad.

Paranoia is ... intense

Suppose we should start associating "Yellow Fever" as a disease only carried by the Chinese, shackle them in little cages and kill them at the edges of our cities? Almost as logical as what they're doing..

Fucking disgusting.
Cloud • Mar 11, 2008 12:48 pm
well, yeah, I meant the visitors to the Olympics.

But there's an inconsistency. First the article says they are trying to clean up the streets for the Olympics. Then it says people are paranoid about disease?

the Chinese propaganda machine is obviously efficient. People spread far more disease than cats.

Ack! this just pisses me off. Stupid Olympics should be boycotted for China's violation of human and animal rights.

And they're the next superpower?

Yeah, I'm scared of Da Fever. Round up time. ;)
janet • Mar 11, 2008 3:08 pm
There is supposedly a move away from lab animal testing in the US because of cruelty concerns. Is it being stopped? No, it's being outsourced - to China.

And the Chinese are hardly alone in the world with their attitudes about animals, unfortunately.
Shawnee123 • Mar 11, 2008 3:32 pm
Yes, but for a country that is considered so progressive they were awarded the opportunity to host the freaking Olympics, this story about cruelty to animals has LONG been overshadowed by stories about cruelty to people. I'm not saying there aren't other countries who treat animals and humans as badly, but they aren't hosting the Olympics in Cuba, Iran, or Zimbabwe, either. Good time for a boycott.
HungLikeJesus • Mar 11, 2008 3:35 pm
Alright, I won't go. Who else?

Edit:
It turns out this whole article is false. That picture is the local meals-on-wheels delivery service.
Shawnee123 • Mar 11, 2008 3:37 pm
Good. I have plans for you here, anyway.

Bwahaaahaaa.

Such a clever mini-god you are.

Shawnee123 • Mar 11, 2008 4:18 pm
Eh, bite me, cic. ;)

THere are a lot of threads I keep hoping you won't see. Get your ass back in chat where you don't cause any problems.

Ummm...have you not noticed the bad press that crackers and rednecks get shawnee? ;)
Shawnee123 • Mar 11, 2008 6:40 pm
wtf is that supposed to mean?

I know you didn't just call me a cracker or a redneck, because you would be sorely mistaken.

Damn, I hate it when a thread turns into a shawnee fuckaroo rodeo. Cracker ass cracker. ;)
Aliantha • Mar 11, 2008 6:44 pm
No I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about the members of your society who you all like to crack jokes about too because of some of their weird ideas.

My point was that the world doesn't judge America on those people's way of thinking, but every country has a demographic which is either a bit crazy or weird or perhaps even supersticious. That's all.
Shawnee123 • Mar 11, 2008 6:57 pm
Forgive me that you missed my asshole sense of humor; I tend to take the most extreme and point it out, like many commodians, I mean comedians, do.

But let me ask you this: If your government told your entire country that their pets were killing you and you would be better off if you would let the government round them up how many of your friends and neighbors do you think would start throwing their cats to the slaughter? Sure, a few of the demographic who is "crazy or weird" but whole scale? I think not.

And America is judged as well. I'm a proud American but I am not blind to the atrocities right here at home and I certainly am not blind to the fact that we live up to some stereotypes (that's how they're born, btw.)

Me having an opinion about THEIR GOVERNMENT scaring the people into throwing their cats to the wolves is no different than me having an opinion that OUR GOVERNMENT doesn't give much of a rat's rump what we say or think.

I don't think it's the common folk who are vying for superpower; don't you usually have to be a power before you can try for superpower? You are missing that fine difference.
Aliantha • Mar 11, 2008 7:03 pm
I think you're missing my point Shawnee, but don't worry about it. It really doesn't matter anyway.
Cicero • Mar 11, 2008 7:33 pm
They've been exterminating their people too... I can't imagine that their cats are any better off....:(
I'll bring it up again but I'll just call it the MDV....I just do this because I am horrified by it....extremely horrified.

Because it's China, I wonder how many are really afraid of their cats, vs how many are afraid of their neighbors reaction if they don't give them up?

Of course it's deplorable. But, come on now, who is really surprised by this? It's China. They treat their own people like shit, why wouldn't they treat their animals like this?:headshake

All together now...

Meanwhile, you can't breathe the air there, which will be some fun for high performance athletes, visitors and residents alike.

Why don't they make everyone take out their air and kill it?
