Good news, bad news

The good news is, Tink found my pocketknife!

The bad news is, the remote control wasn't in the couch cushions and is still missing.
Cicero • Feb 6, 2008 6:25 pm
Ooooh damn it!!! What you accidently find is never as important as what you are looking for.

The pocketknife is no compensation for wings, I mean, the remote.

Damn that Merc.

So, Cicero, what is your good news, and what is your bad news? Something like this?

The bad news is no wings.

The good news is I get to blame Merc.

Or words to that effect... :)

I go absolutely insane when I can't find either my knife or my remote. Sometimes I think I'd rather lose a body part than either of those.

Bad news: That person isn't me.

Good news: My computer is working now.
Bad news: It hadn't worked for the last 24 hours due to some kind of hard disk corruption.

Good news: My mobile phone finally came. (Used, off ebay.)
Bad news: It appears to never have been cancelled from its last owner.

Bad news: Unless it was stolen........ :(

Further investigative work suggests that it belongs to the account of a company that operates pizza delivery franchises, and has a relatively large number of phones. The incoming & Outgoing call logs on the phone show that it was not used since April 2007. One wonders how it was missing? for so long without being reported. At any rate, if the guy who sold it on ebay doesn't give me my money back, I'll send it to the head of the company with my compliments and an explanation of where I got it. I figure if nothing else, I'll have entertainment value out of the incident.

I think it was Seinfeld who did a bit about needing a remote to find the remote.
BigV • Feb 21, 2008 12:16 pm
The bad news is I'm battling an incipient cold. Sore throat, froggy voice. Ugh.

The good news is that I'm able to comfort the sore throat with one of my favorite "remedies". Juice, cranberry, hot. Ahhhh.
Shawnee123 • Feb 21, 2008 12:36 pm
Never heard of heating up cranberry juice for a sore throat. I will have to try it next time. Mine might be more like :juice, cranberry, vodka, hot. Ahhhh.

:)
BigV • Feb 21, 2008 1:01 pm
That would definitely work too. Not really an on the job option tho.

I like the tartness of the cranberry and the hot just feels soothing. There's a commercial remedy, TheraFlu, that is medicine and powdered lemonade meant to be mixed with hot water to drink. This has all the relief without the medicine for me. Like hot tea. Just not with the vodka.

The good news is I tried my new immersion blender this evening, and it works great.

The bad news is I cut the shit out of my thumb while cleaning it afterwards. It doesn't need stitches, but I debated for awhile.
HungLikeJesus • Feb 25, 2008 3:27 pm
Cf, they probably should have had a warning notice to turn the blender off before cleaning it.
Clodfobble • Feb 25, 2008 3:47 pm
Funny thing is, they had warnings all over the thing to be careful when cleaning it, as the blade is extremely sharp. But I'm rather used to ignoring all those warnings that don't mean anything, y'know?

The good news is I've finished my part of the Arts Council submission this afternoon and can just coast.
The bad news is the Artistic Director hasn't finished her part. She's currently AWOL somewhere in the building. She has less than three hours as I'm working tonight and will not leave here late.

So instead of coasting I am fretting and very aware that I should be chasing her.

OOOH!

Bad news - it doesn't look as if my new bra will arrive until after the Beach Party in the pub on Saturday. Ditto my new flip flops.

Good news - the dress which will arrive tomorrow will look better with my new strapless bra - which has arrived. And I picked up a pair of cerise pumps in the charity shop for £3 which will do me all summer, and I can wear to the party!

Much better outcome than I expected :)
BigV • Jun 27, 2008 12:58 pm
Flip flops?

The good news is flip flops are on sale for $1 per pair at Old Navy this weekend.

The bad news is our daughter might find out.

The bad news is my new dress didn't.

But then it might be waiting for me at home, and it has tomorrow to arrive and I can always wash and wear the one I wore on saturday as no-one at work has seen it yet...

Took the wife, son, and son's friend to Dave Mathews Band concert in Charleston yesterday. It was fantastic. Tim Reynolds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3loMJQJBBE is on tour with him for the first time in 10 years. The other notable event was that the main sax player for the band, LeRoi Moore http://www.antsmarching.org/bios/leroimoore.jpg , was severely injured in an ATV accident 4 days before the concert.

http://www.dmband.com/

Jeff Coffin, http://www.gowiggle.com/phimages3/Jeff-Coffin.jpg the saxophonist for Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, sat in for LeRoi Moore. Guys, with a 4 day notice this guy smoked the tunes like he had been with DMB for years. Absolutely fantastic. One of the final tunes was Slegehammer by Peter Gabriel.

Read a cool review here:

http://www.charleston.net/news/2008/jul/05/make_some_memories46662/

I will put up some pics and a link in a few days. These are from the news paper:

http://www.charleston.net/photos/galleries/2008/jul/04/dave_matthews_concert/4066/

Old Crow Medicine Show http://www.crowmedicine.com/ opened for DMB and they rocked as well.

General admission was the way to go if you ever go to a concert in the future at this venue. People paid $300 or more for premium tickets to sit in the stands and the stage was at the back of the center field up against the wall.

The bad news is to get rid of it you have to backup the volume, minus the offending file, format the volume, and restore the backup. Holy crap!

The bad news is... I got totally cowed by a door-to-door salesman the other day. He was the type who just would not stop unless I shut the door in his face mid-sentence, and I was having a bad day which, sadly, always makes me less confrontational rather than more. I just could not bring myself to yell at him to get off my damn porch, and ended up actually buying some of his shit just to make him go away. After he was gone I was so mad at myself I almost cried.

The good news is... I'm selling that crap on craigslist, and I already have a buyer coming tonight for at least half of it. I considered even trying to make a profit, but instead I just listed it for what I paid.

The good news is I had a very nice time during my vacation.

The bad news is that Human Resources tells me (after I got back, although the boss was supposed to tell me before) that I went 6 days over my allotment.

I'm pretty sure they are wrong, because I single-stepped my calendar along with checking V-days on pay stubs and I am under by 2 days, at least.

I am awaiting a meeting with the HR director on this, but I am likely to get a one-week paycheck on Friday.

wolf • Sep 10, 2008 11:31 pm
Me, mostly. I think. Okay, I don't really know. But I will check my numbers against what HR tells me.

What I do know is that every day I fill out a sheet with my swipe in and swipe out times. At the end of the pay period I hand this over to the boss and make a copy. Unfortunately in this instance, as soon as I get the paycheck, I check my log against the payouts for Regular, OT, Holiday, Vacation, and Other, and if it's correct, I toss my copy of the sheet.

I do not know if the boss saves the originals.

Good news - we had an unexpectedly large turnout at the Board Meeting today (yes, Sunday) and on a day where we weren't able to use the much larger meeting room in our neighbour's office. I set up our teeny-tiny meeting room as I'd only had 4 confirmations. As 8 turned up (8!) I agreed with the Chairman of the Board that I could get on with other work in the office and let the dictaphone handle the minutes. To be honest I've only taken minor notes in previous Board Meetings - the dictaphone has always been the main way of minute taking.

So ho, ho, ho I am sat here doing a bit of work, but also in the Cellar. None of the people in the meeting are of the generation that would consider if they hear me typing I might not be doing work! As a get-out clause for any guilt, I was at the supermarket at 10.45 buying the Board lunch, and I won't finish here until gone 17.00 clearing up. Me sitting in the meeting is neither here nor there, I'm still at work and I'll still have catered to the meeting on a Sunday.

The bad news? I provided what I think Americans would call a kick-ass lunch. And I can smell it from here. And I bet the greedy pigs scoff the lot.

Good News: My nanny is moving back into town! She owns the house next to my parents and will be moving back into that. I've hardly gotten to see her over the past couple of years b/c of her husband's health issues they've had to stay mostly at their coastal house. I'm really happy to have her close again, especially since she has her own health issues. You just never know when its gonna be your last time to see a person, you know?

Bad News: Our neighbors who have rented that house will have to move. They are really sweet mom and daughter and we love 'em like family. They've rented that house for 13 or 14 years now. I've watched the daughter grow from a tiny tyke in kindergarten to a girl who towers over me, a sophomore in high school this year. She even chose her band instrument after my older sis, french horn. We'll miss them being next door, they are family to us like any of our blood relatives.

The good news is that the dentist is still giving me the *good shit*.

The bad news is that he scored a perfect bullseye with the first needle. I felt electrocuted in my jaw, half my tongue and zapped in my neck. I was instantly numb. "Oh" he said, "the nerve comes out of a little hole about 1/8" across and I hit the nerve directly about one time in twenty." Holy crap, give the man a kewpie doll.

The good news is it's still working hours later, and as it slowly fades, there's just ... mouth and teeth and tongue--no pain. Yay!

The bad news is it's not all gone yet and I have an itch on my lip. I can clearly feel the itch, no question. But all my attempts to scratch it are impotent. I can't feel my fingers touching my lips. Or my fingernails. Or a piece of velcro. Or a paper towel. It still itches!! I have resorted to going to the men's room and wetting a handful of paper towels with HOT water and pressing that on my lip. I *think* my lip is getting the message. It's not as good as scratching but there is some distraction value in sensing the warmth. God it itches.
HungLikeJesus • Sep 18, 2008 6:59 pm
Have you tried scratching it with a straight razor?
BigV • Sep 19, 2008 6:54 pm
The bad news was that I tried scratching it with my pocket knife. I tried it in a scraping posture, and in a poking/scratching posture. Neither was effective. I could tell that I'd bloody myself before I'd felt any relief from the itch, so I quit before I'd disfigured myself further.

The good news is I'm ok now. (disfigured as ever, but no more so and itch free).

eta: I don't actually have a straight razor, but I've often thought about having one. I've studied about them and they're beautiful tools. I have a weakness for tools (and beauty) and I would like to try shaving with one someday. Any straightedgers out there (of the shaving kind that is)?

I often tell the inch about the woman who got poison ivy on her brain and the only way she could scratch it was to think about sandpaper.

Another thing to be happy about: I'm not your dad!

I've used a straight razor.

It's not as easy as it looks in the movies.

Buy a quality one plus all the accessories (strop, cup, brush etc), no cheating if you want the full experience.

I'd suggest you tap the oldest barber you can find for advice. The barbers today don't shave like they used to due to health concerns but the older ones still know how. Mine gave me invaluable advice before I carved up my face. The old "shave a balloon" before you try your face is good advice. Wear goggles though, he didn't tell me that part and I had to rinse thoroughly the first time I made a slip.

You feel much smoother after though. A safety razor, no matter how many blades it has, does not do as good a job.

It's okay. I have a shortish-but-deepish gouge/cut on the back of my right middle finger. I was debating going to the ER for stitches, but decided to tough it out. With a moderately tight bandaid, it seems to have re-attached sufficiently. It's not bleeding anymore, and I still have sensation in my fingertip.
You know how your skin goes all hyperwhite and clammy looking under a bandaid? It's even weirder on a dark-skinned person.
ZenGum • Oct 2, 2008 9:25 am
There's a "finger in every pie" gag to be made here, but I can't quite find it.

Seriously Pie, how did you cut the back of your right middle finger?

Even more seriously, a band-aid is no substitute for stitches. Especially on the back of your finger, where the flexing of the knuckles will cause the skin to stretch and thus separate and open the wound. Re-opening really interferes with healing. Infection could lead to permanent loss of mobility.
Without seeing it, and not being a doctor, I vote stitches. Yeah, waiting around for (and getting) them will suck, but an unclosed cut on your hand will suck worse.

If you refuse the stitches, then immobilize the finger with a couple of tongue depressors, one each on front and back, held on with some bandage. Get some betadine or similar antiseptic in there. It stings.

Or just hold it up to a webcam so we can all kiss it better.
glatt • Oct 2, 2008 9:54 am
The deeper the cut, the more likely you need stitches, but if you wait more than half a day, they probably won't give them to you. After 24 hours, forget it. You are on your own. They won't stitch it up. It traps infection inside.

So he made an ad to go with the pics, which reads: 2005 F-150, 38k. One owner. Could use a wax job and it's a bit drafty on windy days. Other than that she's a beauty.
He's asking 5 bucks.

Trucks can be replaced...He was doubly lucky because after he crawled out the passenger side another vehicle hit that patch of ice...he felt the wind as it flew by him into a tree. There were, luckily, no serious injuries.

Is it dumb to cry over what could have happened, because I did after I got off the phone with him last night...he's OK but was scared. I'm very thankful this Thanksgiving.

Arghh! A nephew-in-law just died - died! - in a one-truck rollover. Stranger though I be, I am very happy to hear that the same sort of wreck did not kill another. They believe NIL was trying to avoid hitting a deer. New ramp on the road and many deer seen, some hit, along there lately.
PS: And why are trucks so lethal in rollovers, or is it just that the sort of cluster that leads to one thinking so?
Undertoad • Nov 25, 2008 9:14 am
Lower safety requirements than cars + larger vehicle with higher center of gravity.

I never felt safe driving the truck. I drove it ultra-carefully with a lot of lead time for braking and slow turns.
Treasenuak • Nov 25, 2008 9:15 am
And this is why I stick to my 97 Pontiac Grand Am GT sports coupe. Low center of gravity, great shocks and handling, good brakes (although the lines need replaced soon), generally an all around reliable car. Especially since she's got less than 90K miles on her. :D

Sorry to hear about your nephew's death.

I tell people all the time... "Hit the damn deer! You'd rather fix that damage than the damage resulting from the ditch/other car."

They never listen. Oh, they SAY they hear me but then a deer pops out and there goes another car. The rule among trucks is to hit the accelerator and try to knock off the head for a trophy. Sure a new hood costs $5-10,000 and the rest can easily run into the $50,000 range but it sure beats a totaled truck and lost load in a ditch over a stupid deer. It's not your fault if you hit a deer but it IS your fault if you hit another vehicle or roll it over.

The only way to make certain the bat does not carry rabies is to chop off his head and examine the brain. If it hasn't bitten, drooled, or bled onto anyone then it could be turned loose, but one should only take that risk for oneself, and not others. The 10 day quarantine is a valid procedure only for dogs and cats.

That happened frequently at my kids old school. It was a very old building with lots of places for them to get in at night, go to sleep, and then be scared shitless when the kids came in in the morning. It was also common to see them hanging from the rafters all day in the big meeting room.

sorry, clobble...you're usually on the mark, but that is just reactionary bullshit, just like everything else you hear on tv. might as well go stock up on milk, eggs and bread before that big snowstorm......

.5% chance of getting rabies from a bat

Scientific surveys of wild bats typically report a positive rate of less than 0.5% for most North American bat species. Even where a rabid bat had been found, examinations of the entire colony show no other rabid individuals. In addition, bats are not “carriers” of rabies; when a bat gets the disease it will die. Bats also tend to become paralyzed with the disease, often avoiding the aggressive form of rabies.

......Bats will usually exhibit the paralytic form of rabies, which immobilizes the animal. Although they are not usually aggressive, bats will bite if they are threatened. Also, outbreaks of rabies in bats have never been reported, unlike the skunk, raccoon, and fox. Chances of coming in contact with a rabid bat is very rare. In fact, chances are better to die from getting struck by lightning, a plane crash, falling down a flight of stairs, or being killed by your spouse. Actually, you have a higher chance of winning your state lottery that being bitten by a bat with rabies. Even though coming in contact with a rabid animal may be uncommon, it is wise to know what to do if you are in that situation.

A.) What's the rate among bats who are out during the day when they should be sleeping?

B.) We have over 1.5 million bats. That's 7,500 rabid bats in the city right now. Is one likely to bite me on an average day? Obviously not--but the chances are decent that it's going to bite the one poor schmo out of 600,000 residents who happens to find it dragging itself along the ground during the day and tries to pick it up. If you're seeing the bat during the day, you've already beaten the odds.

Guess it has been 2 years..

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - It is estimated 55,000 people die worldwide from rabies each year. Vaccination of domestic animals has greatly reduced the risk of rabies in the United States, but the Indiana State Department of Health reports it is still a serious concern. In 2006, Indiana had the first human case of rabies in almost 50 years. That individual was bitten by a rabid bat and later died.

What Animals Usually Get Infected With Rabies?

Rabies can affect wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, and bats, as well as household pets such as dogs and cats. Vaccination of pets and livestock is the most effective control measure to prevent the disease in these animals and subsequent human exposure. In fact, in the United States, such programs have largely eliminated canine (dog) rabies. In 1998, wild animals accounted for 93 percent of the 7,962 reported animal rabies cases in the United States and Puerto Rico. Rabies in raccoons accounted for 44 percent of cases, skunk rabies for 28.5 percent, bat rabies for 12.5 percent, and fox rabies for 5.5 percent of the cases. Only rarely, rabies is found in rabbits, squirrels, rats, and opossums.

Health officials are particularly concerned about rabies in raccoons because raccoons are often in close contact with household pets, especially dogs and cats. Increasingly, bats are being shown to be important transmitters of rabies to humans.

Bats can make a house stink. My grandfather's house, which is now my aunt's house, has had an active bat colony in the attic for at least 30 years (that I have personally witnessed. It's probably gone on for longer than that.) At dusk you can watch them coming out of various tiny gaps in the siding up near the peak like sand pouring out of a kid's beach toy sieve. You count them until you give up at around 200 or so. I wonder how much bat shit is up there? I hear it's worth good money if you can find the right buyer.

It used to creep me out at night to be lying there, trying to fall asleep, and hearing them rustle around in the walls and ceiling.

The good news is...I finished my dissertation.....

The bad news is, I finally crashed and burned on a deadline...missed electronic handin by 25 minutes (computer crash. my fault for being last minute) and the physical handin by an an hoour and a half (having to arse about with computer. adain my fault for being on the last minute). Also, having read back through, the stuff I wrote at the very end (like the intro) aren't as grammatically careful as my work usually is. There are a couple of typos and a couple of missed footnotes. Oh, and I made a major error on the bilibography when I forgot to separate the different secondary sources into categories.

Again, my fault for being on the last minute. Trying to do that sort of thing 24 hours into a 36 hour work shift is not very sensible :P

I'll round off with some more good news. Apart from the errors mentioned I like what i wrote. I think it holds up. I like my analysis. I hope my tutors agree. That's more important to me than the final mark, if I'm honest. I just hope the mark isn't low enough to crash my grade average. Anything above a 68 and I should still be on for my 1st. Difficult ask though, given a 5% automatic deduction for the late hand in. *chuckles* ah well. Such is life.

*lets out long breath* that's a year long project off my back.

Good news
A colleague has moved into another position. I expressed an interest in taking on extra hours to cover her work. I work 20 hours a week and so did she. School hours do not equal 40 hours a week, but I knew I would get extra if I was accepted. I was!

I have a different child on the autism spectrum to work with in the afternoons, which can only broaden my experience, challenge me more, allow me to work with another teacher (I've worked with her previously and she is very supportive) and basically make a difference in another child's life. YAY!

Bad news
The school has managed the overlap by cutting out my lunchtime supervision.
I now have 1 hour 15 minutes lunch break.
I've gone from working 09.00 - 13.30
To working 09.00 - 15.15
But only gained 5 hours paid work per week.

In truth, this is a typical working week for a TA. So I can't complain.
I just hadn't thought it through and assumed I would continue my lunchtime duties and therefore be up to 28-29 hours a week.

I'll get past it. I nearly am now.
It was just a shock to get the new contract this morning (it was agreed verbally yesterday afternoon) and realise I was only effectively being given one hour a day extra.
glatt • Jan 5, 2012 1:14 pm
Well, congratulations on the extra hours. Sorry the schedule is less than perfect.
Sundae • Jan 5, 2012 1:19 pm

It is good news, really. I'm just easing into it after my inital excitement.

In fact - good news and more good news - I was also informed my contract with Tiger has been extended until the end of school (July 2012).
It technically expires in February as I was employed on a one year contract.

Given that approx 60% of Mums I talk to want to become TAs, the school is hardly short of applicants. So I guess I'm doing okay :)
DanaC • Jan 5, 2012 1:25 pm
Are you considering maybe doing an early level TA qual? It may even be something you could do through the school (in terms of paying for the course and providing support). If there are specialised autism related courses that'd be a major feather in your cap.

@ DanaC:

I value education very highly. And commitment to it.
But I'm not fussed about vocational qualification for the sake of it.

The TA I work with is now in her 2nd year of earning a HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) qualification. She teaches our class alone every Wednesday. She is kind, capable, organised and extremely competent at teaching. She earns a fair amount more than me, but she has been in the job for a long time. Remember I wandered in off the street two years ago and only worked two days a week. I officially started work last February but only part time.
The only raise she will get by going through this long drawn-out admin exercise is that she will qualify for a higher level of pay - HLTA - when she is in sole control of a class.

Same with the HLTA next door.
She has run packs of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts for years. She has sons in the Forces and daughters outside. She's unflappable and can manage any young person of any age. She qualified last year.

You know me, little ambition, high self doubt.
I'd rather have a secure job I loved and take on an OU course in literature. It would have the same earning capacity (ie none) but at least I'd enjoy the work.
DanaC • Jan 5, 2012 1:46 pm
Nahh. I'm talking about the lower level quals. Level 2 or 3. basically like doing an a-level across a year one evening a week.

Not sure if that's how it works at your end of the sector. But that's what I was doing in the adult ed when i taught literacy.
Sundae • Jan 5, 2012 1:54 pm
I was doing NVQ Level 2 when I got this job.
It bored me.
It was like a time and motion study: observe, record. Monkey do, monkey write.
Don't get me wrong, I have to record much of what I do in school in one way or another. But I can see the relevance.

I'd have carried on and got my qualification if I hadn't got the job.
And the school would have worked around the course if Tiger's scheduled Speech Therapist appointment hadn't been on the day I needed off.

The combination of the three was the clincher.

Or maybe I am bone idle.
Not fishing here, it is something I should consider.

Douglas Fir are shallow-rooted, so a combination of soil-soaking
rains followed by gusting winds can bring them down.
Actually, foresters argue for maintaining the "grove" because
the more isolated firs are, the more vulnerable they become.

We have done a little bit of thinning. But honestly, we do enjoy living among the trees.
Plus our City Fathers actively discourage removing live trees,
so homeowners are sort of caught betwix and between.

Our house is at the base of a hill and I was standing near the base
of the fallen tree; and yes, we do take down the dead trees.

This one and the one that hit our house in 2009 were both live trees.
This one was about 100 ft. It first hit the upper story roof and
broke off the (living) top before landing on the lower roof.

I bought a Carboyat a garage sale many years ago. I used it to keep my spare change with the delusion of taking some grand vacation or or or...
Well, I used it for many years - perhaps a decade even. One day I was moving it and when I grabbed it by the neck and rolled it, the bottom shattered. The change mixed along with the tiny pieces of broken glass spilled all over the carpet.
It was as clean a break as you could imagine. I kept it for awhile thinking I could use it as the largest funnel ever before recycling it.

Hebe got a Junior olympic cut for the 200 freestyle at the "last chance" swim meet today

It's scheduled right between the 400 IM and 200 fly -both of which she stands a chance of getting a State cut for (at Junior olympics). It would be stupid for her to tire herself out in the 200 free.
BigV • Feb 20, 2012 2:09 am
???

That sounds like... good news?

I don't understand. How many/which/order/whatever races will she be competing in ... ok, I guess this is the part I'm confused about. What meet did she swim at that produced the JO cut for 200 free? And she's going to State finals (??) where she'll swim in ... what races?

I'm sorry. I am not dense, really (excellent positive buoyancy, yarp), I just .. why does this sound like "bad" news?
monster • Feb 20, 2012 11:03 pm
It's good that she got the cut, but it's bad that it's position in the schedule means she probably won't swim it at the Junior Olympics (which are not as grand as they sound -they are like the consolation/last chance to get a State cut)

She probabaly wont swim it because it's the same day as the 400 IM and the 200 fly which she has also qualified in, and if she swims those well, she might get state cuts in them. the are already pretty close together in the meet, and the 200 free is slotted in between, right before the fly. She will not get a State cut in the free, so it it probably better for her to get more rest before the fly than it would be for her to swim the 200 free.

My sources say the exact opposite, do NOT do this, it will cause the tick to vomit and thus greatly increase the pathogenic load.

Use tweezers, get a good grip as close to the human's skin as possible, pull the sucker off. Brute force, no chemicals.

If this is on a sensitive place, like a scrotum, it is going to sting.

She can't be there -She's swiming a big meet in Ohio. The coach knew that. But forgot. Hebe was cool with missing the tourney because she never expected to get rostered. She assumed she's be Junior varsity who are only expected to be there to cheer.

It's so cool that that got rostered, but really, it would have been better if the coach had remembered that she was missing this one so she didn't feel like she was missing such a cool thing -there won't be many freshmen on anyon'e roster. She probably wouldn't have played much, but still......

SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT: Best halftime show, best presentation, or best team, bringing spunk to the masses.

THE HUNGER GAINS: Survivor of the deathrace.

bad news--it was raining steadily as I cut it into pieces. I didn't finish until after dark.

good news--didn't hurt myself.

bad news--at 4:19 this morning another large section of the trunk with large branches came down. the yellow post on the far left is a 4x4. #2 is about 10 inches in diameter, and #3 is about 20 inches in diameter.

good news--this piece also missed the house as far as I can tell.

That's perfect wording.

We've had trees come down, and seeing where a broken limb

I'm glad your trees only gave a close shave to the house. Good karma.
It could have been much worse.

right, right. upon reflection, I should have given top billing to the good news that I was not hurt. because I was aaaallll over that area cutting up the first downfall where you now see more trunks. I had no ideal I was walking around in the landing zone. more specifically, I had no idea the tree was that fragile. the night the second part came down, it wasn't windy at all. it was raining heavily, but just straight down. I think it must have become so saturated and so heavy that it leaned and cracked and fell with a crash.

Seriously. I would have been killed.

Good news: strong Google-fu led me to find the specific wine that my grandmother was adamant must be used to yield my great-grandmother's famous Christmas cookies, pastissettes. I have been on the search for this wine for about 8 years, and have never found it in any liquor store. I was starting to think I must have written it down incorrectly, or that my grandmother was somehow wrong. But I found it today online!

Bad news: ...they don't make the wine anymore.

ETA:
Good news: further google-fu reveals that there was a 2011 vintage of this wine! Yes! It DOES exist!

Bad news: ...but bottles run $15-$30. And apparently only exist in Germany, Spain, and Italy. Sigh.

While you are at it, can you get me a bottle of ARIMOLIO olive oil from Italy?

Glatt, I'm no connoisseur but I really liked Stonehouse Olive Oil from California. (Enough so that it's actually on my Christmas wish list this year.) It's award winning stuff, but at $16 a bottle + shipping it may well be cheaper to import some from Europe.
glatt • Dec 7, 2012 9:42 am
Stonehouse, huh? I'll have to try that.

This Arimolio stuff was a gift from a neighbor who went to Italy. I never had any olive oil even close to it before or since. And I've been trying all sort of gourmet expensive oils from Italian stores since then, but nothing approaches it. They all taste pretty much the same to me. But this Arimolio stuff was so delicious, you could drink it.
Chocolatl • Dec 7, 2012 9:49 am
I know what you mean. Stonehouse makes a Meyer lemon olive oil blend. Using French bread as a vehicle, I essentially drank the entire 16 oz bottle within days of our return home from San Francisco.

direct elimination

In tournaments we fence a round robin pool to 5 touches. We then use the results of that to seed the brackets for the direct elimination. So I went three wins and two loses with a +2 point differential in the pool which seeded me 8th of 18 and got me a bye in the first round. I beat number nine in my first de which put me in the round of 8. Then I "fenced" the tournament winner... quite possibly the ugliest thing I've ever done on a strip. I ended up 7 of 18 which was an okay result but that last bout has me perplexed.
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 9, 2012 11:15 pm

Good news: We don't have to travel anywhere for Christmas.

Bad news: This means I am hosting all the Christmas get-togethers for three separate family groups. To wit: I will cook a big meal midday on Christmas Eve for a total of 11 people. About two hours after they leave, I will serve another big dinner meal to a total of 9 people. The next morning, we will have the chaos of present-opening with 4 children, and then at 11:00 AM I will serve a big meal to a total of 12 people.

However, this does not have me freaked out, because I kind of don't give a damn. And it really is a good tradeoff for not having to travel. I'll figure something out.

Heh, we were talking last night about which families we could get away with serving nontraditional food to. The only one who definitely wouldn't put up with it is my dad. I once told him I was thinking about making enchiladas on Christmas Eve and he kind of flipped. Fox News probably told him illegal immigrants were taking over Christmas, and here I'd gone and proved it...

Anyway, the current bones of the plan are this: I'm making a big batch of mashed potatoes for our regular dinner Sunday night. Leftover mashed potatoes will be saved for my dad's meal. I will also make bacon-wrapped dates way ahead of time, tell him to bring green beans, open a can of cranberry sauce, and that's that.

Meanwhile, Mr. Clod is going to call his mom today and ask how she feels about turkey burgers and sweet potato fries for Christmas Eve-afternoon. We think she'll be into it. She will also get the first half of the bacon-wrapped dates, and a couple of other thrown-together sides.

Chistmas Day, I have scored big in that my aunt has offered to bring a ham. Woo! And my mom gave me a giant bag of tamales that her massage therapist gave to her. (He's Hispanic. Tamales on Christmas are a thing.) This branch of the family is the weirdest, and will eat whatever the hell I throw at them. They once had a soup potluck for Christmas. So it'll be ham, tamales... and some other stuff.

Also, today I'm going to the GFCF bakery and getting 24 overpriced cupcakes in seasonal flavors (pumpkin, apple spice, etc.,) to be spread across all three meals. Hooray!
Chocolatl • Dec 22, 2012 9:02 am
Clod, how do you make your potatoes? I tried making ours with chicken broth instead of milk/cream for Thanksgiving and they were just kind of... sad.
orthodoc • Dec 22, 2012 11:38 am
I used to make dairy-free mashed potatoes using water and rice milk ... had to up the garlic and seasoning a bit. I used a vegan margarine at the time. They didn't have that fatty mouth-feel, but they were tasty and went well with sauteed mushrooms etc.

My kids are doing the Christmas menu next week and have decided on ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, devilled eggs, broccoli with cheese sauce, and peppermint cheesecake and creme de menthe bars for dessert. I have a feeling I won't be able to eat any of it, lol ... I have no idea what the Christmas Eve menu will be but can't really care this morning ... thinking about food too much right now is not helping my side effects.

Anyway - I thought it rather funny that they decided a turkey with stuffing was too risky and too much work - after insisting on that for every holiday meal for years! Ditto the duck and goose. However, I do appreciate them choosing something they feel comfortable doing. It'll be interesting to watch them smash up all the required peppermint candy for the cheesecake!

I use Olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, egg yolk if you really need to boost the mouth feel. Obviously, mix it with olive oil first and incorporate it slowly into the taters or it will cook. Maybe beans shouldn't be eating raw eggs, but you get the idea. Carmelized onions minced would certainly add that whole Umame angle, Maillard reaction and all that. Oatmilk is another one that has a velvety texture.

I'll have to try oatmilk sometime, if it gives a richer texture. And the carmelized onions sound great! I'd like it - my family has tended to insist on perfect white whipped potatoes in the past. They're broadening their horizons gradually.

The kids are 20 - 26 but the younger ones have only lately developed much interest in the kitchen. My oldest prefers low-fat mainly vegetarian and my two youngest gravitate to comfort foods when at home, hence the ham and scalloped potatoes. I'd hoped they'd want to try some novel taste combinations, but it's all good. Once they get cooking more they'll branch out.

As for chemo ... I have two or three bad days (like this weekend) right after a treatment, and then things start to resolve. I'm very fortunate that way, my taste returns to normal within a week. A downside: I have to watch my weight! Who'd 'a thunk you could gain weight on chemo? Because of the steroids and current meds regimens, a lot of women do, apparently. What a gyp. :eyebrow:

(Eating well for health actually helps - I've gained a few steroid pounds but not much. Not feeling well enough to exercise consistently is probably the biggest challenge.)

Like ortho and foot said, we use milk subs. Our favorite is almond milk, plus salt and pepper, and also sometimes rosemary and garlic if I'm feeling like making an effort. :)

Update: MIL has politely said that she feels the turkey burgers and sweet potato fries would be too casual. (As a face-saving alternative she offered to bring a cooked turkey with them, but we both know that's silly.) Oh well. I'll figure something out.

What about telling everyone that you'll provide beef stew for sixty and they are responsible to bring the rest - give each one a choice of two dishes to bring and then strike it off your list?

If each family group is expecting the meal you serve them to be 'the Christmas feast', which is the sense I get from your mil's comment, then you have been had. Very unreasonable. If that's not the case I would suggest feeling free to be casual or go pot-luck.

Trilby wrote:

The trick is rejecting the idea of complicated, prep-heavy dishes like casseroles and whatnot.

In-laws are now getting prime rib (2 hours in the oven, no big deal,) leftover mashed potatoes (already did the work,) date relish (one of Mr. Clod's specialities, and thus his problem not mine,) cranberry sauce (can opening duties delegated to the stepkids,) frozen peas (microwaved,) and deviled eggs (the one thing I have to make, besides putting the prime rib on a rack.)

Dad's group is getting duck (again, just toss that crap in the oven,) more leftover mashed potatoes, green beans (telling my dad to bring them,) leftover deviled eggs, a second can of cranberry sauce, and bacon-wrapped dates (the one thing I have to make.)

Mom's group is getting ham (aunt is bringing,) steamed green beans with a red bell pepper thrown in for color (the one thing I have to prep,) leftover bacon-wrapped dates, tamales (already sitting in my freezer,) plus guac/salsa for the tamales.

Ain't no thang!

They're fuckin' awesome, and fuckin' easy.

Get about 30 pitted dates. Cram 2-3 slivered almond pieces into the center of each one. Cut a package of bacon into thirds, wrap a third of a slice around each date. Put in a pan seam-side-down so they don't unwrap, and cook in the oven for 30 minutes at 350. Done and done. They taste amazing.

Good news: Minifob's back on steroids. Sure sure, not sustainable long-term, side effects, yadda yadda yadda... but in this moment, I am happy my kid is in less pain.

Bad news: In addition to his guts feeling great, he is reporting that his chronic leg pain is much better too. This means that it is probably not a side effect of earlier steroid use, as we were previously hoping (because that would mean it would probably go away in time,) but rather a mild form of rheumatoid arthritis. We haven't bothered to get it blood tested yet because 1.) it's low on the scale of his problems, and 2.) he's already on all the same drugs they'd put him on to treat it anyway, so it's not really worth the blood draw.
orthodoc • Feb 14, 2013 6:55 pm
Sorry to hear that, Clod - happy to hear that Minifob's more comfortable, but sorry about what the steroid benefit implies. You might want to get some bloodwork done anyway - there's more than one type of juvenile arthritis out there and it would be helpful to know what you're dealing with. It's not an emergency, so whenever other bloodwork has to be done would be a good chance ... but it might be good to have a little more info.

Very glad he's in less pain. Daily pain sucks, badly. Especially if you're a kid.

good news: spoke with a brewery today and got an invite for a tour, to shadow the brewer for a day, and on my deathbed I'll receive total consciousness.

bad news: son of a friend eavesdropped on Mrs. Foot talking with son of a friend's mom about our imminent split. Being the sensitive and caring friend of our son, he immediately sought out our son to offer his sympathies and condolences. (genuinely; he's a very sweet boy whose parents have also split recently) Luckily, my wife handled it with uncharacteristic grace and aplomb since I was not around. By the time I spoke to him he was pretty chill about it, relieved wen I assured him that he and his sister wouldn't need to re-locate, I'd be here daytimes many days, occasional nights (for now) he knew where I'd be when I wasn't here, and that it had nothing to do with him or his sister and that it was because, get ready for this part, the part he divined on his own, it was because I have trouble sleeping.

Good news:
My oldest daughter and I spent Friday driving 175 miles to rent a
26-ft truck and loading it full up with her household of furniture.
I then spent yesterday driving the truck back to PDX,
where she and I unloaded it into her new (to her) house.
(No accidents or harmed body parts, but nobody needs that much stuff !)

Today, we are both exhausted, but we still have 3 large pieces to come down
from the upstairs of our house where she has been living for the past year,
along with a multitude of boxes of books and papers, and clothes
and computers, and, and, and....

Bad news:

Their web site prices are ridiculously high, but they seem to always give enough "discounts"

to make you feel you got a good deal
More importantly, road service, unlimited mileage, and especially...
no hassles about normal wear and tear damages.
... not like another company with initials something like U-H

Good news: we are eligible for a class action lawsuit against our health insurance company. Their reimbursement rates were found by whatever court to be unacceptably low. Anyone on their plan who saw an out-of-network doctor and had to pay the difference in cost themselves will get an extra 5% of the amount the insurance company paid. So for example, if the doctor charged us $1,000, and the insurance company reimbursed us $200, the court has decided I am owed an extra $10. Woo! It doesn't sound like much, but actually, given our proclivity for out-of-network doctors, a rough estimate leads me to expect at least $400-$600, all told.

Bad news: We have to document the shit out of these eligible claims. First we have to print off the Explanation of Benefits from the insurance company showing what was claimed, and what was paid; then we also must provide proof that we actually paid the difference (and didn't just throw the bills in the trash, I guess.) They want a cancelled check, a credit card bill, or a statement from the doctor showing payment.

So far, I have gone through past tax binders and flagged 75+ EoBs that I have to copy. I have called the three main providers most of these fall under, and fortunately they have each agreed to send us a ledger of our entire account, which will put all charges, and evidence of payment, in a handy 1-2 page list, instead of having to copy the receipt for each appointment (which I do have, just like I have every EoB since 2009, but I really don't want to copy them all.)

It will be worth the work, in the end... but what a huge pain in the ass, just to claim money that is supposedly owed me to begin with.

Good news
I had my new little truck filled with yet another load of yard waste as I left on time to work this morning. I intended to take it to the transfer station on my lunch break.

Bad news
What the fuck is that smell? Answer: coolant. I stopped on the on ramp to the highway and when I did, great plumes of sickly sweet steam billowed out from the grill and hood. F.U.C.K.

Good news
Wasn't on the highway, ... really. So I intended to back up the on ramp to get back on the surface streets.

Bad news.
Remember that full load of yard waste? Zero visibility out the back. Just a little rain covered mirror as I negotiated the uphill, shoulder/fog line/grass/other commuting fuckers trying to hit the right turn on ramp at speed.

Good news
I made it without causing an accident. Because I was backing up and focusing on the mirrors, I could ignore the clouds of steam from the front of the truck.

Bad news
I really am out of coolant now.

Good news
It's only a mile on fairly quiet surface streets to the local auto parts store. Four stoplights and I hit every one red.

Bad news
I get to the store at a couple minutes after 7. The store opens at 730, the same time I'm supposed to be at my desk.

Good news
I use the slack time to remove the offending burst hose, it's a top heater hose, I can see where it's spurting coolant. Everywhere. I can get my hose clamp loose from the firewall connection with my leatherman.

Bad news
But not the waterpump connection, just too close of quarters.

Good news
Store opens and at 731 I buy a length of heater hose to match the hose I cut out of the truck, plus two inches.

Bad news
The first purchase of some long nose locking pliers, they couldn't reach the clamp.

Good news
Returned those pliers and got a pair of long needlenose pliers with a 90 degree bend at the tip. Success. The hose was back on.

Bad news
The radiator and overflow tank are dry.

Good news
They sell coolant too. One gallon of full strength and on the road, another gallon of water when got to the office. My total time in the pits was about 30 minutes and I was back on the road to work.

Bad news
By the time I was back on the road, my coffee was cold.

Good news
That was the worst thing to happen to me all day.

WIN!

Raises an interesting question:

You are going to be murdered. Would you rather be killed by a friend or a stranger?
Griff • Jun 8, 2017 7:33 am
I'll take stranger, unless I really need killin'.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 8, 2017 11:04 am
I'll take the friend. Mutual friends will know who did it, and the killer will know they know, and they will know the killer knows they know.
Then I'll be looking down from heaven :lol2: just kidding, I'll be looking up watching it play out.:corn:

Clodfobble • Jun 8, 2017 11:03 pm
Stranger. Whatever the friend's reason for killing me, it might very well extend to harming my family, too. The stranger just wants money or something, he'll go away after I'm dead.
Gravdigr • Jun 9, 2017 12:22 pm
You're ill and suffering. Euthanasia has just been made legal, but, you can't do it yourself.

Friend, or stranger?
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 9, 2017 12:29 pm
That's like do you take your old pet to the vet to be put down or shoot it yourself. It's a very personal thing depending on your relationship. That's a hell of a burden to put on a friend.
Gravdigr • Jun 10, 2017 2:23 pm

Yes it is, but not as easy as it sounds, nor are the nightmares that follow.

The bad news is I have to replace one of my hearing aids.
The good news is it only cost $50 more than in 2013.
The bad news is Medicare will no longer pay part.

Guess that would be a shit sandwich right there. :haha:
Griff • Jul 9, 2017 12:54 pm
Shouldn't that tech be getting cheaper?
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 9, 2017 1:17 pm
Silly bunny, better tech doesn't make shit cheaper, it makes profits larger, golden parachutes fluffier, and Wall Street happier.
What boggles my mind is when they start throwing around numbers in the $4 and $5 thousand range. 36 years experience has shown 3 to 5 years is the lifespan and very few health Insurance companies will cover them. I suspect there are a lot of poor people saying, "What?". :(
Griff • Jul 9, 2017 1:21 pm
Seems like you could take a vacation in India buy your hearing aide there and come out ahead.
Undertoad • Jul 9, 2017 1:49 pm
Yeah I don't get it; is it not just a microphone and an amplifier and a speaker, along with circuits that try to help make it accurate...?

Ain't we makin' seriously awesome $100 earbuds to begin with? My Sony earbuds have neodymium drivers and whatnot...

It's just because it's a medical device and so people can make mint off it, right?
Clodfobble • Jul 9, 2017 4:14 pm
Basically, yes. But Costco recently got in on it, and overseas sites like Audicus are finally starting to break through as well. Both have them for $500-800 per ear.
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 9, 2017 10:29 pm
My strategy is you dress shabbily which is the easy because that's normal, and stop in without an appointment. This is the first time I've had to come back the next day, and that was Saturday half day and I got the last appointment. We discussed the problem I was having and he checked them both. One was kaput. Not surprised for 4 years old.
Looked in my ear to make sure it wasn't plugged and commented of how much empty space he could see in there. Even though I'd never seen this guy before, I'd like a nickel for every time he's used that joke.
He tells me mine could be repaired but that's expensive, and the new ones are 30% more powerful, yada-yada-yada yawn. Pitch finished, remember I've heard this since 1981.
He pulled out my file, sees I paid a grand last time, and beats it by $50. BUT, if I want a phone switch which used to be free, it's $100 more. Also when I bought a pair 4 years ago Medicare reimbursed me $500. They don't anymore because Obamacare fucked up everything, ruined the whole industry, destroyed the nation and will probably cause a zombie apocalypse, according to this guy... without a breath, too. There's been a lot of shady characters in this business and I guess Obamacare put the squeeze on them.

We fat guys sweat a lot and with sparse vegetation to divert it, tend to short out behind the ear types, so I use an in the ear which means taking a mold and sending it in to be copied... or matched to the closest stock size, damifino.

Yes, a mic, some mini-electronics, speaker and volume control. I asked for one that goes to 11 but nope. The biggest challenge is amplifying what you want to hear but not the ambient noise. Crowded restaurants or noisy places are a bear. They've come up with gimmicks like directional mikes and shit which look good in lab reports but in the real world suck.

I find I've been unknowingly reading lips more and listening for clues someone is addressing me. A year ago I was at a cookout at a friends in the NJ mountains. Nice quiet atmosphere, great. Her brother Bruce, his son Bruce, her neighbor Bruce, the dog Bruce, were also there. After a day of that, I was happy to come back and listen to UT wow the groupies.

Good news
I'm going to visit SonofV this morning, I'm on the ferry now

Bad news
We're meeting at the Emergency Room. Again. He had another seizure at work and the call this morning was the ambulance driver using his phone.

Good news
He had a "soft landing" so no broken nose, no concussion, no broken teeth... this time.

Bad news
Still having seizures. I feel pretty helpless, bordering on hopeless. Watching your loved ones suffer is the worst. I *fucking* hate it.

The bad news: The power went out during a hail storm yesterday evening. I was then awoken at

1.) 11:30 - by Minifobette, who was panicking because she woke up and couldn't tell what time it was and couldn't listen to her music to calm down
2.) 3:30 - by the dog retching in her crate for no apparent reason, though fortunately no vomit
3.) 5:30 - by Minifob, who was also disoriented without a digital clock and just wanted to know the time
4.) 6:30 - by Minifob and Minifobette together, wanting to know why their DS chargers weren't working, and
5.) 7:15 - by the dog, who needed to pee.

The power stayed off all the way until 5:00 PM, which meant no hot water for showers, no food beyond dry pantry goods, and no air conditioning all day.

But! The good news:

We had a fairly busy day which involved lots of excuses to leave the house, and tonight we're going to take the kids to see my uncle's folk band play at their regular gig at an awesome barbecue place, and visit with some out-of-town relatives whose company I genuinely enjoy. And the post-storm weather cooled us back down into normal spring temperatures, which should hopefully last for a few days.

The bad news is, I took a massive chunk out of my finger with a mandolin slicer a week ago. The good news is, my Wound Seal powder worked great (I'm an easy bleeder, and cuts smaller than this have sent me to the ER for coagulating agents because they just wouldn't stop after 7+ hours.) It stung like a right motherfucker, but it stopped the bleeding, and saved me a $100 copay.

I peeled the big artificial scab off this evening, and now it looks like this:

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I guess I'm sorry about ur finger; but, don't get used to it.

I remember telling Tonchi, somewhere in here years ago, about those wound sealing powders not long after they came out on the market. The powder; also, dressings and sponges that contain it, are nice to have around.
Clodfobble • Dec 9, 2018 12:25 am
I remember someone here suggesting finely-ground black pepper as a viable alternative, and I will say, the Wound Seal powder sure looked an awful lot like it. Didn't smell like pepper, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn it was an ingredient.

It's Kaolin for the products used by the military.

Various ingredients are used by other manufacturers.

ETA: Here's a detailed article on using kaolin clay and cayenne pepper as expedient blood clotting agents:

`Seven years and six months!’ Humpty Dumpty repeated thoughtfully. `An uncomfortable sort of age. Now if you’d asked my advice, I’d have said “Leave off at seven” — but it’s too late now.’
`I never ask advice about growing,’ Alice said Indignantly.
`Too proud?’ the other inquired.
Alice felt even more indignant at this suggestion. `I mean,’ she said, `that one can’t help growing older.’
`One can’t, perhaps,’ said Humpty Dumpty, `but two can. With proper assistance, you might have left off at seven.’
