LJ • Jan 11, 2008 12:29 am

i resolved to get down to 250 by valentines day.....so expect a post from me on the 15th copping to my failure.

revel in your failure, abuse is encouraged.

I haven't fucked up mine yet. My resolution is to be caught up (or at least out of the woods) on my bills by Valentine's Day. So, expect a celebration post from me on 2/14/08.

LJ, I assume you didn't say which valentines day.

Man, this was totally the year I was going to quit killing hobos. Oh well, there's always next year.

And he also didn't say 250 of what.

Kilograms? Cigarettes per day? Beers per week? Dead raccoons under the porch? This shouldn't be too hard.

Now I have that Cake song ..."The land of race car ya-yas..." in my head.

I'm not sure whether to sue SM or Starbuck's. On the one hand SM made me laugh, on the other Starbuck's doesn't disclose on their cup that coffee will burn the nostrils.
SteveDallas • Jan 11, 2008 12:20 pm
I resolved not to make any resolutions.

:smack:
DanaC • Jan 11, 2008 12:58 pm
Well...I was stopping smoking on Jan 1...it took until Jan 7th (I think) before I managed a day completely cig free.

The other resolution was to 'get organised' with my council stuff and uni work, once I have got my semester one exams out the way. I'll let you know how far I get with that one, once the exams are over ;P
Cicero • Jan 11, 2008 1:00 pm
I just made wishes. I do this every year...Less disappointment that way. This is my recipe for new years wishes:

1 Woodburning fireplace, or gas, or firepit. (wherever you burn stuff and stay warm)
1 Piece of Paper
1 Pen
6 Pack of beer or mixed Vodka drink.

First you light your new years fireplace being careful to have enough wood. You pour yourself a nice drinky and begin your evening. When you feel inspiration coming on, you write down a wish on your paper very tiny, cut the wish from the paper, and throw it into the fireplace and watch your wish burn into smoke. From there it is obviously whisked up into the air! (this is my preferred method of making a wish everyone is different) And repeat.

No commitment. Just wishes. Easier to follow up on if you feel your life already has too many demands.
:)

do the words "self-defeating" mean anything to you, LJ?

positive attitudes and realistic goals make a difference

and . .. very nice wish procedure, Cicero!
Drax • Jan 11, 2008 4:27 pm
The only resolution I have, will ever have, or will ever need is 1204x768. :p
kerosene • Jan 11, 2008 4:41 pm
I prefer 1600 X 1200...but only with a 19" or larger monitor.
Drax • Jan 11, 2008 5:43 pm
Hey, whatever floats yer boat.

does the word sarcasm mean anything to you, cloud? irony, perhaps?

people are motivated in all sorts of ways. some respond to praise, others to fear of loss, some to vanity, some to competition. this was a whimsy thread. i think my getting to 250 by feb 14th is prety lofty....but maybe i'll get to 255? or who knows? aim high. i've upped my standards....now up yours!
Aliantha • Jan 11, 2008 11:56 pm
well the only resolution I wanted to make failed before it'd even begun.

I think the problem was, I made the resolution at a time of weakness, so it's not surprising it failed.

Oh well, never mind. :) It wont affect the outcome of my life anyway.
Cloud • Jan 11, 2008 11:59 pm
no, LJ, I just don't like it when people set themselves up to fail. god knows I've done it to myself plenty of times.

I'd be the first to applaud you for any effort you make toward your health, or other goals.

and as for the up yours part . . . is that bad? :)
monster • Jan 12, 2008 1:22 am
omfg. anyone who takes this whole new year's resolution thing seriously should be nailed up. If you want to change something in your life, just damn well change it. at the moment you realise you really want to change it. ignore the date, only write it down on paper or say it aloud if that helps you, and for fucks sake resolve to lighten up a little. Nothing is more amusing about new year's resolutions that the breaking them stories.....

Actually I've decided to make a pretty big change in my life. I can't wait for New Year's to roll around again so I can make that change.

Recipe for weight loss:
Breakfast -- 1 serving of All-Bran with as little milk as possible
Lunch -- Tuna sandwich: 1 can tuna in water, 2 slices of bread, 1 slice of american cheese, and a thin coating of Miracle Whip
Dinner -- Tuna sandwich again. You can have two if you absolutely must.

Eat like that on top of a decent exercise program. Make sure to take a multi-vitamin, at the very least.

You will be hungry. You will lose weight. Quickly.
classicman • Jan 14, 2008 8:50 am
You will starve, your teeth will fall out and you will smell like fish 24/7.:eyebrow:
Undertoad • Jan 14, 2008 9:33 am
You'll regain all the weight and more because it's a bad diet that will fail, instead of a consistent lifestyle change.
lookout123 • Jan 14, 2008 9:43 am
i am telling you that if you are honestly interested in long term weight loss check out the Men's Health Abs Diet. It is basically just a recipe book. I'm not trying to lose weight but I use the thing because they come up with good recipes. Their motto is that "if you ever find yourself hungry, you aren't following the abs diet". I have found that to be absolutely true. I actually have to cut down some of the quantities because it is a lot of food. They even plan in your "cheat" day.

It's not that bad. I did it for about 6 months (less strictly as time went on). Lots of vitamin supplements and a cheat day once per week or so.

Um. Some people will, sure. But I've kept that weight off and more for about 5 years now.

That said, I would never do it again. However, if you are trying to lose a certain amount in a certain time, it'll do it healthier than that cabbage soup diet.
LabRat • Jan 14, 2008 9:54 am
I don't really make 'resolutions' for New Years, I just use it as a point to get back on track. The holidays kind of throw me off, work, health and mentalwise.

One of the things that inevitably happens is I find myself coming in later and later to work...as a result of usually staying up too late in the evenings becasue if holiday prep in it's various forms, post holiday clean-up or whatever.

Haven't made it in before 8:30 yet damn it, and I want to (should) be here by 8:00. 8:40 this morning.

Grrrrrr.

Today in group we did Goal Setting. Unfortunately, as a member had already taken up a large amount of time giving us detailed information about something irrelevant (ie only tenuously connected with his own family and not at all connected with drinking) the counsellor didn't go through SMART very clearly.

For those who are unfamiliar
S - specific, significant
M - Measureable, meaningful
A - Attainable, achieveable, action-oriented
R - Realistic, reasonable, relevant
T - Timely, tangible

I've done it before so was able to handle setting goals which fit each of the criteria. But then I had to sit and listen to six other people just ramble through vague, unmeasureable goals which they hadn't set actions or timeframes for. Sheesh.

Anyway it confirmed what mine are so I'm alright Jack.

Complete current therapy (a bit of a cheat as I have no intention of NOT completing it)
Job by end of March (preferably sooner)
Financial stability - even if paying off debts - by end April
Healthy BMI by my birthday (July 1)
Start saving for trip to America by end of year

Didn't add current plan to find a partner by the end of the year. I only share things like that with anyone with access to the Cellar ;)

BTW Monster, I have always found that a specific date for starting a change in my life is a very useful focus for my ambition/ motivation. Sometimes it has been an abitrary date, sometimes after a specific event (a birthday, payday, holiday etc) and sometimes a traditional date like New Year. HM was full of scoffage for my New Year return to the gym, claiming I was just putting it off and was making it harder for myself. I've hit my weekly targets for the last two weeks while he is still keeping to the same "holiday" schedule he developed over Christmas...

yeah, that tuna sandwich diet is scurvylicious!

What's wrong with at least having tuna in a salad without a whole heap of oily dressing? The salad would have far less calories than two slices of bread, and it'd be a shitload better for you.
LJ • Jan 14, 2008 6:28 pm
yeah, our gym has been totally crowded.....it's my first year attending, so i wonder how long it takes for it to thin out again after the new year swell.
kerosene • Jan 14, 2008 6:32 pm
I know exactly what you mean, LJ. 2 weeks ago, we were the only ones coming into the dojang. Now, its packed. People, fall off the wagon, already.

The gym I go to was unusually empty today. I wonder if somebody warned them?

In my experience gyms start to return to normal by mid-Late February.

It takes about a month and a half then they start dropping like flies. Every year it's the same thing. Good for those trying to make the change but what a PITA at the gym when you can't get into spin class because some overeating, overdrinking, oversmoking blob decided to make a change while drunk on new year's eve
jinx • Jan 16, 2008 1:32 pm
I've avoided the gym on Mondays for a while now because of the same thing on a smaller scale. Every day is Monday right now.... except for Friday. I had the warm pool to myself last Friday.

My resolution is summed up by the phrase "carpe diem".
Living well and engaging in the humanities.
Sundae • Jan 18, 2008 10:01 am
I was disaccommodated by the Resolution Wannabes last weekend. Grrrrrrr.
The gym has a disproportionately small warm up/ cool down/ floor exercise area - it can be a real bottleneck even though there are enough machines in the CV and weights areas. Grrrrrrr. Roll on mid-Feb when it begins to quieten down again.
Flint • Jan 18, 2008 10:06 am
Yeah, hello? There's like 150 exercycles, but only room for maybe five people on the yoga mat. What, nobody stretches? That's at the big chain gym, the gym at my work is even worse. There isn't anywhere to stretch, you have to stake out a spot on the floor, and people have to step around you.
