I've loved watching the other Cellar house tours, so I thought I'd add my own to the pile. Kinda goofy, but it works.

Very nice place! Did you clean? It looks clean.

Choco you have such a cute place! Thank you for doing a tour.
Chocolatl • Jan 3, 2008 5:56 pm
Yeah, I cheated - I've spent most of the week tidying up to get the place video worthy. I even made the bed. Kind of.
Undertoad • Jan 3, 2008 6:24 pm
Well done. It's great to see where people live!
monster • Jan 3, 2008 7:03 pm
Love the view. I never knew people had pet hedgehogs. They're the Brit equavalent of armadillos I guess -exotic to us but roadkill to Florideans...
Aliantha • Jan 3, 2008 8:06 pm
I could live in your house Choco. Very nice. Looks cosy. Thanks for sharing!
DanaC • Jan 4, 2008 4:41 am
I've known people with pet hedgehogs, though usually a much darker colour than that one.

Choco your home is lovely. I love the layout, it has such a spacious, airy feel to it.
BrianR • Jan 4, 2008 8:46 am
I'd post one because I'm proud of our house but then there's the possibility of giving a guided tour to thieves as well...

Or am I too paranoid?
glatt • Jan 4, 2008 9:09 am
Most thieves want what they can stuff into one of your pillowcases in just a minute or two before they get caught. Just don't show where you hide cash, guns, or jewelry, and you will be fine.

I have nothing of any real value in my house, although it would cost a lot to replace the crap I have. I'm going to try to post one of these videos too.
monster • Jan 4, 2008 10:48 am
there is absolutely no danger of thieves finding anything in my house. When we were burgled in the UK, the police were horrified by the mess. more so when they found out the theives didn't make it.
jester • Jan 4, 2008 11:24 am
It's a great looking place, well done.
Chocolatl • Jan 4, 2008 6:28 pm
Thanks, everyone!

As for the thieves, I don't think there's much they could get out of the video that they wouldn't find on plain sight. I would maybe stay away from things like "here's our broken window that can be opened from the outside" etc. Originally there was an entire section where I was standing outside and introducing myself, but I felt like it was showing everyone exactly where we lived (apartment number and so on), so I went back and cut it out.
BrianR • Jan 4, 2008 11:07 pm
good point. Maybe I'll post a video of our place next time I get home.
Especially the pit bull you will meet upon entry.
DucksNuts • Jan 5, 2008 6:56 am
I soooo want a Hedgehog!!!!

Are they friendly Chocolatl??

Lovely house, its great seeing the different styles etc. :)
Chocolatl • Jan 5, 2008 8:48 am
Some hedgehogs are very friendly and affectionate. Our Bailey is more of a loner -- he prefers to be on his own than to play with people. He's very timid around strangers, and he sleeps all day. If I were to have picked him up in the video, he would've made angry noises with a very groggy face. I'll try to post more of him over in the "Post Your Pet" thread, soon. :)
DanaC • Jan 5, 2008 3:40 pm
Oh he's too bloody cute by half. I just saw the pics and vid of him in Post Your Pet....wonderful. Are the hedgehogs you get over there usually so pale?

He looks a great pet. Seems very inquisitive.
Chocolatl • Jan 5, 2008 5:13 pm
Yeah, I'd say they're all about that color. They vary greatly, though -- some are very, very dark, while others are completely white. They also seem to be smaller than their Brit cousins. If you make fists with both hands and hold them together... Bailey is a little bit smaller than that when he is curled up.
glatt • Jan 13, 2008 11:47 am
My wife and kids were out for the morning, so I took the time to do a quick tour of the glatt house. Please come in and make yourself at home. The only thing I did to clean was put a suitcase away.

Enjoy.

Clodfobble • Jan 13, 2008 12:48 pm
That bathroom cabinet is awesome. How long did it take you to get it to the point it's at now? I need a cabinet installed in my downstairs bathroom, if you're ever coming to Texas...
classicman • Jan 13, 2008 12:48 pm
Awesome place Glatt. Thanks for the tour.
DanaC • Jan 13, 2008 12:52 pm
That was great! I love seeing these video tours. I really have to get around to borrowing our kid's vidcam
glatt • Jan 13, 2008 12:55 pm
Thanks!

The cabinet took a long time, but only because I'm slow at doing projects sometimes. It should take about oh, 30 hours to do. I think it took me 30 hours over the course of a year.

After I finish tiling the downstairs bathroom in the next month or two, I'm going to finish the upstairs cabinet. Just have to make a face frame and some doors and drawer covers, and then paint it.

You and Choco need to get together and take guitar lessons.

It's like Cellar Cribs!
Chocolatl • Jan 13, 2008 5:34 pm
Glatt, I love the colors in your place -- especially the purple. While I lived with my parents, my mother would never let us paint the walls because according to her it made the house harder to sell. (Nevermind the fact that we planned to continue living in that house for the better part of a decade.)
What a warm looking home. Thanks for sharing!

That was awesome glatt. I loved your commentary. I wish my husband could build stuff around our house like you do around yours. He's mechanically inept though, and that's a self proclaimed title. All I can say is, lucky he's smart.

Anyway, I loved the tour. Very cool.
Razzmatazz13 • Jan 13, 2008 11:53 pm
Choco! You sound so cute! Great Tour!

Our microwave kills our satellite TV when we use it, go figure.

Glatt! Awesome house! I'm jealous, when you moved into your workshop, my jaw literally dropped. My workshop is near the middle of a very, very long list of projects for my dad, so I'm quite envious of yours.
Sundae • Jan 14, 2008 10:22 am
Wow this is GREAT!
Made my day.

I've gone back and checked them all out as I am at a PC with earphones today. Thanks to everyone who has posted. You all made me laugh at some point, which makes me sound quite mad in the library. I also found myself inter-acting with YouTube which is quite worrying, I forget you can't see out of the other side to see me waving you goodbye.

I loved to see your fridges and cupboards! Now I feel I need to go back and do mine again to include the current themes ;) I'll leave it another 6 months and see what else people show...!

I'm surprised that American freezers are so small, at least in comparison to your fridges. We have an under-counter fridge and an undercounter freezer, so we have the same capacity for both (and it's still too small). My parents have a full size fridge in the kitchen and TWO chest freezers in the shed...

Lovely houses people. More please.
BTW UT, for a non-dog person I have to say I was completely bowled over by Pearl.
kerosene • Jan 14, 2008 11:48 am
Very nice, Glatt. We have the same toybox thingy (the one in the living room) and the same little plastic primary color kids drawer thingy. Your house looks like a fun place to hang out.

Fantastic glatt. Beautiful doors and hardware, and your floors look great (how do you restrain yourself from pulling up the rest of the carpet?). I love the pumpkin dining room too. Great tour - thank you!
glatt • Jan 16, 2008 1:20 pm
Thanks!

We pulled up small areas of carpet in other parts of the house, but the floors aren't as nice in those areas, so we left the carpet. It's a shame, since the floor in the living room is so nice.

The previous owners messed up the floors by gluing parquet style flooring all over it, and then later carpet over that. I keep having to remind myself that the only reason we could afford a house in this neighborhood was because the previous owners messed it up with stuff like that. Dropped the price down into our range.
melidasaur • Jan 25, 2008 10:52 am
Glatt, we have the same TV stand... IKEA, right?
glatt • Jan 25, 2008 11:02 am
Yep! We bought it when the kids started to be big enough to crawl around and get into everything. Didn't want them blowing out the speakers on the stereo by messing with the knobs. I like the lockable glass doors. They let the remote signal through, but not the curious little hands.
TheMercenary • Jan 26, 2008 8:49 am

(less they read your tidbits here on the cellar)
Elspode • Feb 9, 2008 2:21 am
Well, shit. Now, *that's* the nicest thing anyone has said to me.

I've mentioned before that I have written professionally exactly twice in my life, both times in very limited formats and for limited audiences. I did very well as an editor/arts reviewer/editorialist for the UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City) UNews. My work was well received by readers, and most importantly to me at the time, lauded by the professorial sponsor of the newspaper. He repeatedly cited my work as the best of all the staff, and when he was critical, it was unerringly constructive and totally valid. Odd...I never met the man, but I will carry his praise and critiques with me to the grave. He was absolutely dead on.

My only other "publish for pay" instance was a sidebar thing that I wrote for the KC edition of The Pitch. It was a horrid experience. I was writing about a fairly serious event that was in the "elaboration on upcoming events" section, a weekend seminar given by a highly qualified and well known Reiki master from Australia. I wrote and rerwrote this trifling piece five times (and we're talking a five paragraph article, here), only to have it repeatedly rejected by the twenty-something section editor, who wanted it to be "edgier, more flippant, trendier..."

My biggest limitation in writing is that I really only do well when describing reality. I rarely succeed in fabricating quality work out of nothing. Even the few songs I've written over the years are always based on reality.

But I do very much appreciate the support I always get from my Cellar family. In truth, it is this sort of positive strokes that matter to me. The rest is bullshit.

The octagonal turrety bit looks cool. I want a non-rectangular room/turret. What is your view from those windows? Something cool or the rest of the neighborhood? (Which could, of course, be cool...)

Congrats Choco and Kits!!!
Can't wait to see it all.
Chocolatl • Jun 22, 2010 12:01 pm
Thanks, guys!

The octo-turret is in fact now a wonderfuly weird septagon. Originally, the room extended back to be a formal living room & dining area. Since we are buying new construction, we had the option of putting in a wall and closing it off so that now the septagon is going to be Kitsune's office. We are moving into the suburbs, so the view is not too exciting -- just the rest of the neighborhood.

Yes, they did...

In the 1900's, lumber here in OR was "full dimension" here so a 2x4 measured 2 full inches by 4 full inches. With prior approval of the insurance company, our repairs were done with full dimension lumber sawed in a small custom mill up in the (bear infested ? ) woods.

I remember a house guest swearing our last house was haunted - he was totally convinced of it because the house was more than 10 minutes old and he 'felt something'. Nutjob.
ZenGum • Jun 25, 2010 10:21 pm
Casa del Lumberjinx looks like it could be haunted, I must admit, and all those "In case of spousal insanity break glass" boxes are a tip off too.
jinx • Jun 25, 2010 10:28 pm
No not this house, our last one, about 100 years younger than this one.

I could totally see this one being haunted. It's old (almost 200), it was a doctor's home/office so people might have died here, I let people sprinkle a dead guy's ashes in the yard because he lived here as a kid, and most creepy; we found a bone under the floor in the attic of the human variety.
But it's not.

Oh, maybe that was when MTV Cribs came round.

Anyway, here is mine in the hope other people will reciprocate.
It's not quite as personal as a house tour, but we'll get to hear your voice and see your food after all. Oh and you can always fridge'clean beforehand. I didn't, but I blame everything on the 'rents anyway.

Oops, just realised I identified Boursin as soft cream. It's not, it's cream cheese (with garlic and herbs). Probably why I tried to say garlic for the gherkin relish.

Also, I missed the salad drawer underneath.
And we don't keep fruit in the fridge (apart from berries).
So we're not as unhealthy as we look!

In other news, my wife and I are closing on our first "together" home. It's quite small and we rent the lot it sits on, but it'll be ours, no mortgage. The plan is to spend no more than five years in it before upgrading to a much bigger model on our own land. On the bad side, there's no cable service so we're dependent on the Dish for TV and possibly internet if the local DSL isn't good enough. On the bright side, it's quite shady and the neighbors are said to be friendly. I'll post pics after we get the pink slip and keys (and do some sprucing up).

Congrats BrianR - Aside from that how are things?

Hey cool, I just got a letter from the historic commission saying we're getting a plaque for the front of the house.
"You are the owner of one of the 24 most historic buildings in our town, built between 1740 and 1860." So we get a plaque. For free even. Cool.

classicman • Aug 19, 2010 3:39 pm
Thats awesome ... How does that impact the roadway situation, if at all?
xoxoxoBruce • Aug 19, 2010 7:05 pm
They'll move the road closer so people can read the plaque. :haha:
jinx • Aug 19, 2010 8:40 pm
Wouldn't surprise me, the jerkholes.
No further words on roadage or lightage. Must be in committee...
kerosene • Aug 19, 2010 9:27 pm
I don't think we have buildings that old in Colorado. I lived in one from the 1860s once...and the one I live in now was built in 1903...but we are pretty far West. I always wanted to live in one of those historic sites, though. Pretty cool, jinxy

And congrats to you, Brian!

Cool. Did George Washington ever sleep there? :D

Hey, wait, what?
Why hasn't anyone else posted the contents of their fridge?!

C'mon people.
Historical plaques happen everywhere, only special people have fridges.

Yea, but does that mean you have to get their permission to paint or make any changes to the outside. We have tons of historic homes around here and you can't touch them without approval even though you own them.
fargon • Aug 23, 2010 5:25 pm
Here are pic's of the new place.

xoxoxoBruce • Aug 23, 2010 7:19 pm

fargon • Aug 23, 2010 7:32 pm

xoxoxoBruce • Aug 23, 2010 7:36 pm

Oh, and the plastic bag on the bicycle seat is because you've be riding around the neighborhood naked again, isn't it. :yesnod:

Congrats on the new place fargon/keryx, it looks so nice. The back yard is brilliant.

Nope. They're not that organized here.
xoxoxoBruce • Aug 24, 2010 12:15 am
Yet! If they form a local historical commission/committee, be sure to get on it.

I can see you spending a lot of time gazing out over that river, fargon.. I'm really glad to see you in such a bucolic locale. You deserve it. I hope it brings inner peace and quietude along with it.

It won't, it's a completely separate policy... and getting to be an expensive one. My premium jumped 500% this year.

So. Fucking. Jealous. Right. Now.:mad2:

Some of you may remember when I posted pics of the huge limb of a Douglas fir fell on our house.
It was one limb of a "candelabra" that grew out at the top after a storm.

Well, 2 evenings ago I was standing in the driveway, and heard a "crack".
Then another "crack".
The a much louder "CRACK CRACK"

I didn't even look up, but started running to get to the protection of the porch.
Just as I reached the first step, slipped and fell, the sister to the first limb hit the ground.
I knew I wasn't hurt, but scared beyond anything in my life before.

It's taken a couple of days to clean up and cut off the sections so far.
The butt end of the limb on the ground is about 3 ft in diameter,
and the sawed end now is at 16 inches.

As the situation is now, I think it could not have landed in a better place,
and with what is remaining at the top of the tree will probably go
on to reach new heights.

Hope,
Hope,
Hope...
Griff • Jul 13, 2013 2:58 pm
Yikes!
orthodoc • Jul 13, 2013 7:10 pm

There are times when the best course is to stand and confront the danger; there are times when the best course is to :bolt: ; the trick is getting the right response to each type. GOOD CALL!

Holy guacamole, Lamp.
Bucking the trend of Dwellar bad luck in 2013. Survival instincts, you got them.
footfootfoot • Jul 14, 2013 10:36 am
Not sure why you left the tree standing after the first incident.

Glad your hearing is still good!

What feetz said ,
Dont leave an accident waiting to happen
Gravdigr • Jul 15, 2013 7:22 pm
They don't call 'em 'widowmakers' fer nothing.
BigV • Jul 18, 2013 2:13 pm
Didn't you say you were moving to a different place LL?

That tree will be someone else's problem then.

I'm glad you're OK. The butt end of the LIMB is three feet across, holy crabcakes.

Today a tree service company removed the "widow-makers" left on the trunk.
We now have a new living sculpture on the property.
The family consensus is that this Douglas Fir shall hereafter be:

"Dougie, the Startled Dragon"

So you've given Tyhee Saghalie a huge war club with which he might smite you at his leisure. Good luck, white man.

What I see here is death by strangulation; and the murderer is English Motherfucking Ivy. Look how high up those vines climbed on the trunk. They could only do that if they were well rooted at the base, and well rooted ivy strangles the roots of its host.

RIP Douglas Fir.
Lamplighter • Aug 13, 2013 5:09 pm
The ivy vines you see on the trunk have been dead for 20+years
But, point taken.

Eventually this 200 yr-old tree, like all firs, will have to come down,
but for now it's another example of "not on my watch" cowardice.

That's based on a belief that the killing efficiency of ivy
is no where near that of the chain saw.

" Long live Dougie ! "
Gravdigr • Aug 14, 2013 5:50 pm
If he lives very long with no head, you may have to change Dougie's name to Mike.
