I've just looked down and noticed that our newest member's user name is hardcorebondageslut. I have to admit, it made me chuckle. I wonder what she'll be talking about.

Do you ever see the new user names and wonder what they'll contribute, if at all? Do you ever think to yourself, this one is never going to last?
bigw00dy • Dec 10, 2007 6:51 am
When i see that username...I think of a spammer, or a desperate attention whore who has daddy issues!!
Sun_Sparkz • Dec 10, 2007 7:01 am
Its so hard to think of usernames sometimes though. i always stick with the generic sun, sparkie, sunspark.

just once - it may be fun to create a takes4bigcocksatatime or a likes2lick_grandpa

maybe THEN someone will listen to my liberal views on welfare.
Aliantha • Dec 10, 2007 4:43 pm

I always take liberal points of view most seriously when they are espoused by hot babes with nasty online handles. Makes sense somehow.
Spectacle • Dec 10, 2007 10:40 pm
I'd say, does it matter what her/his name is?
Can we look beyond the controversial name and try to get a feel for the posts? That way we can get to know the poster behind the name.

Hard to tell if he/she never posts (which in most cases will happen) but let's not take the poster at face value.
Aliantha • Dec 11, 2007 1:03 am
I see your point Spectacle, but if a username is a persons online face, I know what hardcorebonageslut tells me. ;)

Third-world spammers continue to be a problem for us. The practice of not allowing new accounts to start threads has completely vexed them, but they continue to open and (usually) validate new accounts to TRY to post new threads. And they continue to do this at the same pace as they did when they were successful at it.

It's like somebody gave them a script to follow...

Every two-three months I clean out all the accounts that registered and never validated, and all the accounts that registered and haven't logged in months. Hundreds of accounts get deleted, half of them with gobbledygook names, the other half with names like xxviagraxx that give their game away.
ZenGum • Dec 11, 2007 10:43 am
UT, I just wanna say, thanks for all your work keeping out the spammers. When I see that little message "This post has been deleted by Undertoad. Reason: spam" I smile. Ha, you low-down spammer, smitten by the mighty hand (webbed foot?) of Undertoad!
Thanks!
xoxoxoBruce • Dec 11, 2007 11:37 am
Every time you see the "deleted by" message, it represents hundreds of spammers that didn't get that far.

This made me chuckle. I mean, seriously, this was a name chosen...it's not like it's the poster's birth name or something.

If I were in the bookstore, and picked up a book entitled "The Erotic Adventures of Two Horny Sluts Who Love To F***" I would not expect it to be about a boy and his new pony living on the prairie.

You cannot judge a book by its cover, no, but sometimes if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, and looks like a duck...it's probably a duck.

LJ • Dec 11, 2007 12:24 pm
that reminds me of a dvd i saw once:

Well, you were quick with the citations ... but I maintain that the original sources are mistaken. Do you really reckon the Principle of the Proliferation of Pornography is the 34th law of the internet? Much too high IMHO.
Can you really think of 33 laws that would have come before it?
1. If you can sell it, they will spam it.
2. If a site yells "FREE!" very loudly .. they are trying to sell you something.
...
...
34. If you can think it, there is porn of it.

Nah, too high.

EDIT: Reconsidering in the light of overwhelming evidence.

It's rule 34 because of some guy writing up a list that everyone thought was hilarious 70 bazillion years ago on the interwebz.

The list shifts around a bit whenever I find it, but the porn rule is ALWAYS rule 34.

I reckon this is temporary too, but perhaps longer lasting that previous strategies to block their access. I wonder if we'll ever get to the stage that for full fledged read write edit thread access to the cellar we'll require a peer reviewed application. Essay format. Ten sample posts. XoB is a proactive moderator. This keeps us from wasting time on new users who registered to develop a rapport with us for the purpose of eventually trying to sell us something; or, to otherwise string us along for their own self gratification. IMHO, good forum moderators will spend additional time researching new registrations that raise a red flag with them indicating potential unsuitability.

It seems that sales people and self centered users are among the various categories of people who often use the same (or similar) nickname at many of the places they register. Perhaps this is because they register at so many websites that a different username at each one becomes too inconvenient. A Google search by username will show their other affiliations. Their profiles elsewhere sometimes reveal more than their profile here and their posts elsewhere almost always reveal things that wouldn't be revealed here for some time to come.

Any member can, indirectly, participate in the process. I've done it when I noticed that a new user's posts sounded rehearsed (like a salesman's pitch). I did the research and incorporated enough of my findings to raise a red flag in one of that users threads. I submit [thread=15035]that thread[/thread] for your entertainment (it's funny). The user's fate can be found [thread=15050]here[/thread].

The Cellar has an annual moderator election sometime around the first of the year [if UT doesn't change the system]. Anyone who doesn't like having a proactive moderator not only gets to vote on the matter, they get to articulate their rationale and possibly sway others' opinions (including the moderators').

It's getting scary-bad. Here's a screen shot of a Cellar admin page: it's a search for the newest user registrations. I've whited out user info from the three that may -- MAY -- be legit. Notice that all of these are today. There are another twenty from today below that.

It's basically a tsunami of people in third-world countries, attempting to spam.

Image
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 1, 2008 12:30 am
From this forum....
Gmail is an odd one. I block thousands of domains from free email providers in Eastern Europe and other spam-prone countries, but still permit registration from Gmail. A large percentage of the manual spammers that get through use Gmail, but overall a small percentage of users that register with a Gmail address are spammers. Same thing with Yahoo, too, if not more so.

These are the most common domains found in the users I banned. Again, consider that I've already got thousands of domains in the blocklist, so you won't see mail.ru, gawab.com and the usual in this list.

banned / legit (% banned)

163.com: 6 / 14 (30% banned)
aol.com: 9 / 152 (6% banned)
comcast.*: 5 / 80 (6% banned)
gmail.com and variants: 103 / 842 (11% banned)
hotmail.*: 56 / 589 (9% banned)
yahoo.*: 115 / 610 (16% banned)
rediff.com: 3 / 0 (100% banned; since added to the blocklist)
mail.com: 3 / 4 (43% banned)
lycos.*: 3 / 13 (19% banned)
linuxmail.org: 3 / 0 (100% banned; since added to the blocklist)
fastmail.fm 3 / 5 (38% banned)

Gmail, however, is the preferred address of Indian SEO forum spammers, the current plague of my site.
SteveDallas • Mar 1, 2008 11:34 am
This may change.... apparently the "captcha" (the little graphic with barely readable text that you have to type in to prove you're not a computer program) that Google uses has been cracked, so there may be an uptick in automated gmail spam. At least until they change to a different captcha generator.
DanaC • Mar 1, 2008 1:27 pm
Some of those seem obvious spammers. But how do you know all of them are? The last three for instance.

I understand that some of them are obviously third world...but does that mean they are automatically spam? Also, if their username is potentially not tht of a spammer but their email seems to be of a trader, that could mean they use the same email for trading as they use for personal. Just a thought.
xoxoxoBruce • Mar 1, 2008 3:10 pm
You don't, Dana. That's why it takes so much time to look up their IP to find where they are from, then look up other forums where they have used the same user name or email. Keep in mind, a spammer can't make a living by just breaking into the Cellar. They have to score a bunch of sites and usually work in that manner, meaning they approach a group of sites using the same info.
See if they have registered in a slew of forums in one or two days.
See if they are lying about their location when they registered.
See if they have posted a homepage in their registration and if so what is it? Is it a link to a porn site or are they selling something?
It's often a judgment call, and I try to err in their favor.

Of course if they are a dog, they are automatically in. ;)

Well it's not strictly necessary to do much with these people unless they post or otherwise attempt to spam in some way -- putting the URL into the username is a dead giveaway. About half of them actually manage to confirm their accounts, but if they never post I will eventually cull them during a user "purge" which I do every other month or whenever I remember.
elSicomoro • Mar 3, 2008 2:02 am
I had been thinking about closing the Bosque forum for a while, but the final straw was some fucknut using a symbol that the board didn't recognize in his username. I couldn't delete the account the easy way, and the bastard spammed the board. I'm not all that savvy with SQL, and didn't want to go through the trouble of spam-proofing the board with an add-on. So I killed the forum, and just have the blog version now.

So here I was thinking it was one of those "be compressed into a fake diamond after you die" type deals and was going to be all smartarsed about Flint becoming a stone... but then I googled it and now I just feel ...ew. They make mini urns and things on necklaces so you can carry some of the ashes of your loved one around with you. Would anyone really want to do that? I guess it's a tradition in some cultures to keep some remains, but.... no, no thanks. not for me.
Clodfobble • Jun 30, 2010 10:30 pm
Yeah, my good friend did it with her dad's "cremains." (That's really what they call them. The name alone makes me shudder.) Except she was very adamant about not wanting to handle or even see the ashes go into the jewelry before it was sautered closed. Seems especially strange to want to carry something like that around if you're not even certain he's in there.

He may be a spammer, but I don't think it's nasty and disgusting for a guy to gently douche a woman during her period. I mean he seems to see it as a loving and caring act, rather than something he is repulsed by.

Like Sheldon with his specialist shower attachment for cleansing prior to anal sex.

I'm not disgusted by a man who doesn't want the aftermath of sex to look like Vietnam.

[always a yes - I can always escape out of a toilet window]
"I'd love to douche you when you're menstruating"

I just didn't think the actual content of the post was disgusting or equivalent to sucking a dead man's cock. Which I've found to be a dinner party stopper too.
infinite monkey • May 25, 2011 2:57 pm
OK, I'll grant you my comparison was poorly thought out.

But yeah, I was really put off with that as 1st or 2nd post. We've likened the Cellar to a bar, and as much as I like to have fun, if someone I didn't know came up and said that to me right off I'd knock 'em right upside the skull. No question.

DanaC • May 25, 2011 3:17 pm
In fairness though, whilst an early contribution it was entirely in keeping with the nature of that particular thread. It's clearly the kind of thing we are happy to talk about in here.

Bear in mind, quite often when people sign up and post, they've often spent a little time reading existing threads and may feel they know us more than we know them.

I think we have to be careful that we don't let experiences like PP and Emma make us overly cynical with newcomers who may have inadvertently got the wrong impression about our unspoken assumptions and unwritten rules.
infinite monkey • May 25, 2011 3:26 pm
I get what you're saying, I really do...but for ME? No.

Nope nope nope.

That isn't fit conversation for just meeting people. I'll get more prude stickers I'm sure, but as open book as I am there are some things I think are meant for more intimate relationships. If "whoever" had been here a bit longer, even, I might reconsider.

But nope.

So I'll shuddup and all, but I maintain that for ME, I was doing the online version of knocking someone upside the head for assuming that they can say absolutely anything they want to me out of the blue.

I call it respect. That's just ME. IMHO.

;)
Sundae • May 25, 2011 3:29 pm
I've just spent the last 15 minutes or so checking out my first posts.
Okay they weren't 100% me in relaxed mode, but I am reasonably proud of them as an introduction.

I loved this place from the get-go and the best I could hope for was that some of these shining people might reply to me. Wolf, Bri, Dana & BigV did. But it took a long time before I stopped feeling hurt if I didn't get a response.
DanaC • May 25, 2011 3:32 pm
Yeah...but this is a bar with a snug at the back filled with filthy movies and pics and a big box of handkerchiefs, and a weekly relationship counselling session held upstairs, just a door along the corridor from the sex addicts' meeting group.

If s/he'd started a thread about it, I'd agree with you. But that was the right thread for that contribution. Don't want to read about other people's sexual habits? Don't read a thread specifically about dwellar sexual habits.
infinite monkey • May 25, 2011 3:36 pm
Yeah, I thought it was the ladles clone.

Meh. Fuck it. Really.

I hope this one does all the wonderful things for the Cellar that the last 4 or 5 who started out the same way did.

eta: Another instance where a dwellar is told to not read something they don't like, but it still never happens in the politics threads.

I know you're all so sexually liberated and all, but to me progressive isn't using that as your only pony.

Try another trick or two first. Like a bright smile and warm greeting.

Meh.
DanaC • May 25, 2011 3:40 pm
Wtf are you talking about? lol

I am not all that sexually liberated. In fact i am a bit of a prude. Notice i didn't answer the question in that thread. I just think that if the thread and context exists then it's unfair to pick on a newb for joining in with that. For all we know that might be what drew them here in the first place.

Shawnee (from shawŭn, 'south'; shawŭnogi, 'southerners.' W. J.). ...

Algonquian languages have words similar to the archaic shawano (now: shaawanwa) meaning "south". However, the stem shaawa- does not mean "south" in Shawnee, but "moderate, warm (of weather)". In one Shawnee tale, Shaawaki is the deity of the south.

Universities block triple-X domain names

Universities have gotten into an unlikely business: buying .xxx website addresses.
New .xxx addresses became available to the public last week,
but some schools didn't wait that long to secure important addresses,
as a way to prevent adult content providers from profitting off them.

As with universities, other trademark holders such as companies
took advantage of the "defensive registrations," Lawley says.
"A lot of famous brands did that."

How is this different from any other kind of domain name camping?
Clodfobble • Mar 26, 2012 6:56 pm
Because domain name camping is done by someone who has nothing to do with the brand, holding it in the hopes that someone who does have something to do with the brand will want the name.

The universities already own the brand; they are preventing domain name camping before it can happen.
classicman • Mar 26, 2012 8:49 pm
So its more like domain-packing before domain camping?
Clodfobble • Mar 27, 2012 5:56 pm
Or maybe like pepper-spraying any campers who come near your domain. Stand Your Ground!
BigV • Mar 27, 2012 7:16 pm
so, clodfobble.com and clodfobble.xxx are the same thing? They don't say the same thing to me, and presumably, the ones ending with .xxx won't be used. That's camping. I'm just gonna get this, but not use it.

I understand your point. What are they gonna do with them? Redirect to the .edu domain? Cause that might be weird...

Yup. Here in WA, some gigantic douchebags gobbled up all the domain names for pot growers/companies that applied for licenses. Now they're charging the growers $1500 to buy their own fucking business domain names.
