Color

Color! Surely, someone has some fall foliage photographs to share for the year? I'd love to see 'em, since we don't get fall in Florida.

Right now my laptop (with all pics on it) is with a grad student at SFN, but I've taken some new commute shots to show the change in seasons. Will post as soon as I can :)

Good point Kitsune!.....

Tonight I will be sure to photograph our fall leaves during the sunset, it lights the world up (and the leaves) in a soft pink... this is awesome.....will do Kitsune! I should be doing it anyway.
glatt • Nov 6, 2007 4:45 pm
The drought is giving us a pretty brown fall this year in the mid-Atlantic region. No decent color to speak of.
Bullitt • Nov 6, 2007 6:05 pm
Well I'll throw some out here for you all. Went hiking con mi padre this past weekend in Mihocan State Park. Enjoy.

Howzat? First 4 are from the local rec center. Not the best day weather-wise, but the trees were at the peak of their color, I just had to stop and snap a few. most thought I was nuts -it's not in the most picturesque of locations.

Last 4 are on daughter's field trip at Waterloo Bog, a half hour further west of here.

Monster -- what types of trees are those in the first set of pictures?

Pie -- love the sunset.

Looks like maple to me.
Chocolatl • Nov 6, 2007 11:21 pm
I thought they were maples, but I wasn't sure. I'm pretty awful with tree names. The first time I remember seeing a maple tree was during a trip to Georgia, two or three years ago, so I'm still easily confused. :o

Thanks, monster. Love your maple -- I had one like that outside my bedroom while I was growing up.

Kitsune, you punk. You stole my idea. Just for that I'm gonna flood your thread with *my* color. Ha!

Fall color in the Pacific Northwest. Washington is rightly called the Evergreen State, but it is not called the Onlygreen state. I call this one Speeding Trees.

Enjoy!

Doh -- "great minds..." and all that. We need a b&w thread, I think, at some point. I just need to go shoot stuff to fill it with.

I love the blue/green/yellow in your Speeding Trees shot! Wonderful motion blur, too.

These are all great! Jinx, your first one makes me want to paint. Bullitt, you are so cute. V, as always, your pictures speak volumes about your appreciation for aesthetic beauty. Thanks for sharing these, everyone.

Just visited your little painting website, you've got some awesome stuff there! I love "10th Street", I would seriously consider buying that if I saw it in person.

Colorado doesn't really have fall colors, just fall color.

I'm including two types of fall color shots.
ZenGum • Nov 9, 2007 12:03 pm
I love the fractal nature of HLJ's first pic.
It's so perfect it almost looks computer generated.
HungLikeJesus • Nov 9, 2007 12:09 pm
I just checked the EXIF data on the second picture; it was taken the first day of winter (Dec. 21). But we had more snow than that last year the week before Halloween.
TheMercenary • Nov 9, 2007 12:11 pm
Great shots guys.
BigV • Nov 9, 2007 12:24 pm
My word, HLJ...

The top shot is incredible! I have ... a couple dozen of that same shot. I think you and I walk through the woods the same way... But none of mine are that lovely. Thank you for the beautiful pictures.

You all are so talented. I wish I could give photography a shot (pun not intended.) I have no idea if I would be any good. Isn't there so much to learn?

It's a snap.

Seriously, if you have a digital camera you've got free trial and error learning.
Your local public library will have a few how-to books.
Shawnee123 • Nov 9, 2007 1:11 pm
I've thought about saving for a camera. I would love to learn to use a "real" camera, but for starting with a digital what are things one looks for? I would want to get one I could learn on, but not one complicated to start. If I find I suck at it I don't want too much invested. When I've looked at them I have no idea what the basics are.
glatt • Nov 9, 2007 1:31 pm
Even the "real" digital cameras have an automatic mode that does all the thinking for you. The fun comes when you learn how a camera works and you override its little chip brain to get exactly the image you were looking for.
Shawnee123 • Nov 9, 2007 1:36 pm
I know there is a thread somewhere about some of the Cellarite cameras. Maybe I should look for that.

Though automatic would be a place to start I'm interested in learning what you said, glatt, about getting the image you want and not what the camera thinks you want.

Like I said, I guess there is a lot to learn. Of course (and duh to me) I could look into the equipment requirements for photography classes here at the college and save up to get one so I could take the class (tuition would be waived.)

:)
HungLikeJesus • Nov 9, 2007 1:41 pm
I agree with the previous statements about digital cameras being good for learning - at least those that allow you to adjust shutter speed and aperture settings. It's instructive to take several pictures of the same subject, while, for example, changing the aperture to see what effect it has on depth of field/depth of focus. I think this was discussed a little bit in a previous thread, perhaps by Bullitt.
Bullitt • Nov 9, 2007 1:46 pm
You don't have to start big either Shawnee. If it's film you're interested in, there are plenty of low cost options out there. In high school, I used my mom's old Canon slr from her days in college back in the 70's with a prime (non zoom) lens and it taught me a ton about learning the fundamentals of photography. Composure, etc.

Most college photo classes I am aware of require a film slr. If you just want to experiment shooting around, there are many cheap but quality Canon digital point and shoots available. Canon is pretty good at giving you great images in Auto Mode, but also allowing you a good deal of exposure control when you want it. Sometimes the little cameras are somewhat limited in their abilities however, your mileage will vary.

Happy Monkey, you take some nice pictures. I like the third one the best. It reminds me of the little girl's red coat in Schindler's List, but with a far less gruesome ending of course. Beautiful pictures. Thank you!

No leaves (I'll get onto that soon) but plenty of color.

If you fold 1,000 paper cranes and hang them at a shrine, you get to make a wish. I guess wishing that you never see another bloody crane might be quite common.

Bravo HM! I love them both.

By the way, the second picture is a textbook candidate for the HDR treatment. You should try it. I actually don't have any software that does it, but I know what you're talking about. You should be able to handle it easily, especially in light of your experience with stereoscopic images.
Happy Monkey • Nov 28, 2007 8:10 pm
Thanks!

My camera doesn't provide an easy way (as far as I can tell) to take the multiple exposures needed for HDR. I'd like to get a snazzier one some time, but have no immediate plans.
BigV • Nov 28, 2007 10:59 pm
srsly, two clicks from the same spot will do for the mechanics of the picture taking. The camera's "trick" would have to be to let you explicitly control the exposure. Expose the first picture so the lightest part of the frame is properly exposed, leaving the dark part really dark and then another snap from the same spot with the lightest part properly exposed and the bright parts blown out. Then ... overlay them... ok.. that's where the software comes in handy, but the idea's the same.

Now *I* want to try it... I'll be keeping my eyes open for a likely subject.
Happy Monkey • Nov 29, 2007 12:47 am
I actually just discovered that my camera DOES have the automatic exposure bracketing. I may have to track down some of that software.

You put a nickel in the HDR slot; here's a dollar's worth. I've been bitten. I don't have the AEB, but I did find the manual exposure button. More to come later. Gonna have to locate the tripod too.
