Sometimes something will catch my attention: Rome, The Long Way 'Round. Starting last night at 9, I'm actually watching an hour of TV per week now. The Long Way Down started, and I'll probably watch it. The good thing is that BBC 2 doesn't really have commercials.
If I had to pay anything to see this stuff, I wouldn't.

I am a parliamentary junkie. I like to know what's going on in Westminster, so all the QuestionTime type programmes, news and analysis, behind the scenes stuff and the Parliament channel if there's nothing else on :P
I don't watch TV...occasionally we will watch a DVD movie, but no cable. And we can't get any local stations here. Doesn't bother me, at all. Too many other things I want to do.
I watch TV all the time. Usually with the sound turned off and the caption on; and with the stereo on and a book in my hand.
I think kids' tv time should be strictly limited, however. I've already got the "book habit"--they do not.

We don't have cable and can't get reception on any local stations, either, so we haven't watched tv in years.

As a TV addict, I am highly envious of Dar. I'm trying my hardest to cut back, but I'm having a tough time breaking the habit of switching the TV on for background noise.
Thankfully, the program lineup kind of sucks right now, so it hasn't proven as difficult as in the past.
At the end of the day, after we get the kids in bed, I'm so damn tired. I just have to plop down on the couch. And the remote it right there.
My average work week is 50 to 110 hours a week, every week. I will have a period of 3 or 4 days off in a row everyother month and one 2 week period a year where I am off from my regular job, but often I just work somewhere else.
Bet none of you fuckers do 24 and 48 hours for a regular work schedule, followed by 8 to 10 in another job. I put in 80 to 110 hours a week in a regular work week.

Yea, like a fireman, sort of. Plus it's by the hour. And when I finish at 7 am on Wed I leave this one and go to another one for 8 or 9 hours, go home, eat with the family and come back on Thurs am for another 48 hours. What a joy. But hey, I am off Sat! then back for another 24 on Sunday.

Because they don't have commercials and the government controls the airwaves.
Something like that. It's a licence to use not to own, but they are effectively the same. You only need one per household, though, regardless of how many TVs you have. The TV licence also pays for BBC Radio, which is also commericial free and excellent. You do not need a licence to listen to that. As for government control, well, yes and no. US TV is way more censored and channels have much more politicial bias.....
End result, no commercials on BBC, higher quality programming all round. There is commercial TV, but because it must compete with the govt funded commericial-free TV, not only are the programs good, the commercials are too.
Moving here is the reason I stopped watching TV. I took up the internet instead. But I only visit commercial-free sites. ;)

Thanks Monster. I never fully understood it even though we have visited the UK a few times and have friends who visit us here. Our TV must actually torture them. I love the BBC radio. I try to grab it off an internet stream when I think about it.
You're welcome. There are additional TV options, but that's the origin. I have heard that the quality of TV has deteriorated since I left (6.5 years ago), because of reduced funding, satellite TV competition and general lowering of standards, but now I'm out of the habit of watching,I don't really care any more. the good documentaries etc can be obtained on DVD or over the internet, the good discussion is here, we live near Detroit so not all radio is country.... :lol:

I used to be a hard core TV addict. Then one day I quit cold turkey. That was in 97.
Since then I've learned that it's not the TV that is addictive, it's the internet, digital cameras, and ipod devices. :blush:
When there is a TV around with cable I'm hyptnotized by the Discovery channel. So many interesting programs there now.
Then there's Fox news though their site is better IMO.
