We Demand a Better Chat Program

lumberjim • Oct 24, 2007 12:25 am
cuz gabbly sucks donkey dongs.

cmon tony. spend some of that hard begged for money and upgrade this motherfu**er. We NEED integrated, reliable chat functionality. there is chat almost every night at this point, and often during the day. gabbly was a nice start.....and flint deserves an attaboy.....but i think we're outgrowing it.

respectfully,

the masses

Do you really think Gabbly is that bad?

I kinda like the quirkiness. It's kind of like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get. ;)

What's wrong with you Jimbo? You on the rag again?
Aliantha • Oct 24, 2007 12:30 am
Have a pork chop
lumberjim • Oct 24, 2007 12:39 am

Aliantha • Oct 24, 2007 12:46 am

lumberjim • Oct 24, 2007 12:53 am
ok, ok.......pipe down, you.
Aliantha • Oct 24, 2007 12:56 am
pipe...did someone say pipe???

It is imperative that there be different software for no one to use!
Cloud • Oct 24, 2007 1:43 am
is there a good chat software available? All the ones I've experienced (which admittedly is very few) seem to suck as bad.

But I do have to say--I can't get there from here. I have to go way back in the chat thread and click on a link there. For some reason, that's the only way it'll work for me. Which is why I don't chat often.

Lucky you guys.

A chat room on a message board. Sorry, but I don't get it.

I think it's posters like me (and even possibly because of me) that we have a chat site here.

Jimbo doesn't like how I carry on conversations in threads, so to shut him up, UT put in a chat room. :)

Try cleaning out all your cache files Cloud. do a defrag and it should work. Sometimes I can't get in and I know it's time to tidy up my comp.

The Gabbly chat link, at the bottom of the page, doesn't work for you?
Undertoad • Oct 24, 2007 8:24 am
Yes, in my experience there is no "better" thing available. Well maybe it's coming around now that AJAX is getting so popular, but Java-based chat is always going to suck. If somebody finds something better I'd be happy to put it up.

Could you please explain this statement? Why will no-one use it? There are usually half a dozen regular posters in there when I visit, and no, not the same half dozen. Or are you (perhaps jokingly) trying to suggest that the people who use it are nobodies?
Cloud • Oct 24, 2007 9:49 am
no, the chat link doesn't work for me. And my computer doesn't need defragging (sniff).
dar512 • Oct 24, 2007 9:53 am
Do you have a popup blocker or perhaps javascript is turned off?
SteveDallas • Oct 24, 2007 10:07 am
I was thinking about this.

OK, sorry, that was mean.

Anyway. I've been kicking around the idea of setting up a semi-permanent room on one of the public IRC servers. These are already up and running, and would therefore require no effort on UT's part. The technology is, for the most part, well-established and stable. It's overwhelmingly text-oriented, which in my view is a plus. And these days, many (most?) of them have web browser clients that mean you can click right in, with no software installation required. (On the other hand, experienced folks who prefer particular clients can still use them.) Most of them allow people to set up semi-autonomous rooms with a minimum of hoop-jumping.

One potential downside (there may be others I haven't thought of) is that some corporate networks reflexively ban IRC traffic on grounds that some spyware botnets use IRC to control zombiefied computers.

At any rate, I want to pick one out and run some tests. If it seems good, I may run it up a flagpole and see who salutes.

Besides, a chat room on a message board is kinda overkill, IMO. :p
