About a year ago, I was asked to join the board of a new non-profit publishing company (Dzanc books). Our mission is to publish fantastic literary fiction which gets passed up by the big publishers and for-profits because it does not fit neatly into the marketing pigeonholes currently used in the industry.
Today, our first book is launched -"All Over" a collection of short stories by Roy Kesey. I'm off to the reading by the author (flown in from China, where he lives) in a few minutes.
I helped select this story collection -I trawled through the submissions -solicited and unsolicited. I helped choose the cover. I was the non-industry voice, the library-user who'll try anything, but it has to draw me in quickly. I was really only a very little part of the decision-making process, but I still feel like a tiny part of this project is mine. And I'm pleased with the results.
And now I need to see if I can remember how to put make-up on.
