.45 suggestions.

rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 6:46 pm
Probably going to be getting my new .45 soon (antis please stay out of this, it is OT) and want some suggestions/advice.
Renewing my carry lic, I have never had a "civilian" lic before, I had a commercial lic. I'm sure it is very different.
I know I can't carry where they sell open alcohol, state/govt property and some other places. That will be different, but not much.

I am looking at the Glock Slimline .45 or this one. If I remember correctly it is the Glock 6.
I really hate the weapons with the thick handles.

What is the difference between the APC round and the straight .45, which is what I always carried?

I liked that I could get my target ammo at Wal-Mart.
lumberjim • Oct 16, 2007 7:09 pm
I was thinking of getting my cock shortened. Any suggestions? It's just so big, and ungainly. I'd like to get it under 24 inches at least......but 18 might be ok too.....
rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 7:14 pm
I know the apc was developed for the Thompson, but don't know the details.
Does not look like I'll ever own a US gun... all my previous weapons are from Germany, the Springfield is a company they purchased from Croatia and they just import it.

rk -

I'm sorry I can't give you any advice, as mine is an old M1911. I haven't looked at any of the newer ones.

Some of my Hapkido instructors are also handgun instructors. I'll ask if they have any recommendations. Are you determined to go with a .45 for concealed carry? Or are you open to other options? How will you carry it?
rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 9:02 pm
I have a few options for carry, as I have the chair... but yes, only a .45. I miss my old officer's model, but it was really heavy and am wanting to go with the newer, lighter, type.

Were you planning on doing anything about the girth? I really hate weapons with thick handles.
Aliantha • Oct 16, 2007 9:12 pm
Sometimes I'd like to give rkz 45 suggestions. :alien:

well, they might not ALL be constructive from your perspective. ;)
monster • Oct 16, 2007 9:28 pm
he only wants .45, though.

Something like...

Given the conditions you mention, I would suggest that you might like to try a
rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 9:28 pm
And not in here... as I stated in the original post... I asked for no OT posts... silly in here I guess.
Aliantha • Oct 16, 2007 9:29 pm
Suggestiong number 1. Yes it is silly to think people would stay on topic in this place.
rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 9:32 pm
I already stated it was a pipe-dream.
You already went over your .45... thanks for the suggestion.
Aliantha • Oct 16, 2007 9:33 pm
I wasn't counting the decimal point. :) I still have 44 to go.
rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 9:34 pm
Noooooo, thread title is clear.
Aliantha • Oct 16, 2007 9:40 pm
Sorry, I'm decimal deficient. It's still 44 to go. :)
rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 9:43 pm
Will someone please post about my new gun!?
TheMercenary • Oct 16, 2007 9:48 pm
rk, I have Sig P245, I like it. It is very accurate out of the box and needs no "tunning" or upgrades like most of the Colt look-a-likes. My only complaint is the weight, I wish it were a bit lighter.
http://www.remtek.com/arms/sig/model/245/245.htm

The only exception to that IMO would be Kimber Ultra Compact ll. Kimbers are a bit pricey.
http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/ultracarry/ultracarry.php

I have an HK USP which is more of a combat hand gun similar in size to an officers model. I really do love the HK's.
http://www.hecklerkoch-usa.com/usp_general.html

I would like to get the HK compact in .40 but it is hard to justify with owning the Sig.
http://www.hkpro.com/uspc.htm

I am a hard core .45 guy but I would take a good look at .40 cal hand guns. Many federal agents and LEO's now carry the .40 in a number of different manufactures and makes. All of the studies have proven the effectiveness of the stopping power of the .40 in real life situations. My wife has and sometimes carries a Sig 229 in .40.

I would take a good look at the Subcompacts Glock G30 (.45) or the G27 (.40). I found the 27 hand grip to short for my big assed paws.
http://www.glock.com/english/index_pistols.htm

The 30 just barely fit, but it was lightweight and I could imagine it would be comfortable to carry.
http://www.glock.com/english/index_pistols.htm

The larger handgrip models the G23 would be a great gun but it is also in .40.
http://www.glock.com/english/index_pistols.htm

Bottom line is how much you want to spend. That will dictate all of your options.
Aliantha • Oct 16, 2007 9:52 pm
You should get one like this rkz. It looks pretty cool.

TheMercenary • Oct 16, 2007 9:53 pm
The .45 APC (automatic colt pistol) is the modern style .45 that 95% of all .45's use. The other is the .45 Colt which is rimmed and is found only in revlover western style handguns now a days. Then the variations go up from the standard .45 that we know to the expanded hunting rounds that would still be considered .45, but that is another subject.

That HK looks a lot like my old weapon. I really am lookin' at that. How is the weight/balance on it?
Yeah, Kimbers are out of my league, but sweet. Like that 1911.

Weight and balance are perfect. In fact I think they are a bit better than my Sig. They have a double slide spring that reduces recoil. I only have the full size model but I really want to check out the compact.
rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 10:28 pm
I will be looking at the compact. I have two really sweet concealed spots on the chair. Plus I am cold all the time, so I wear a jacket a lot.
I also wear khakis with large side pockets often. Lots of spots.
On the chair I will permanently mount the holster for it. Much easier.

Those hats are great. I have about 6 of them and wear them on a regular basis.
rkzenrage • Oct 16, 2007 10:49 pm
I really am thinking about getting my old sniper rifle back from the ranch from time to time and starting a club/classes. Could be fun.
We have the room, they would pour access for me and we have all the citrons in the groves we could ever use to simulate head-shots.
I would love to get up to 2000m constantly.
But, that would be SO long term... starting next year and if my pain gets way under control by then. Kinda' a pipe dream... but something that could be a lot of fun.

Urbane Guerrilla • Oct 17, 2007 12:58 am
Are we talking .45 ACP or .45 AGP -- the Automatic Glock Pistol cartridge is something new from them, essentially .45-ACP ballistics in a cartridge the length of a .40, giving you a more compact concealed carry pistol. Some police departments have adopted this new chambering, finding it remarkably ergonomic: the cops are scoring better on their twice-a-year marksmanship qualifications.
rkzenrage • Oct 17, 2007 1:00 am
Cool... I was looking at the XP, which is just an ACP. But will check yours out because I am still thinking of getting a SlimLine.
Thanks!

I'm a Sig or H&K person myself, but Springfield makes some fine weapons. I know the owners and have family sprinkled throughout the production line.
rkzenrage • Oct 17, 2007 1:28 am
Very cool!
Though the XP line is from Croatia, at least from what I have read.
lookout123 • Oct 17, 2007 1:30 am
they had some quality problems with the early production runs and I haven't kept up on it in a couple of years. I prefer a ported .40 myself anyway.
