These are just after returning from the 911 ride through NYC, DC and Somerset.

Yeah, VW engine, but what is it in? Custom one-off or adaption of another application?
beauregaardhooligan • Oct 24, 2007 8:33 am
Muahahaha! I *thought* that'd throw you.
BigV and xoB, you're partially right.
Those are vdub heads on a beemer motor, and trany (note the shaft drive) in an Indian frame. At least that's what I was told, I'm not a biker. The way I drive I need four wheels under me.
Apparently this guy is a beemer man, threw this all together, and has been riding it for years! I was told he's put over 300,000 miles on it.
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 24, 2007 5:52 pm
I don't think so. That's no Beemer motorcycle engine. Did BMW make a flat 4, air-cooled, car engine?
beauregaardhooligan • Oct 24, 2007 8:55 pm
I surely don't know, that's just what I was told.
I don't know much about 2-wheelers.
Now that you mention it, that pulley/distributor configuration *does* look like the back of a bug. Maybe he mated it to the trany.

beauregaardhooligan • Mar 20, 2008 9:44 pm
Why?
They put sirens on firetrucks so you can hear them as well as see them.
I'm not saying they should all lose their mufflers, but you'd certainly notice them more and that'd help keep them from getting run over.
HungLikeJesus • Mar 21, 2008 12:04 pm
Mufflers generally point backward, so, by the time you hear the motorcycle, it's already going past.

As a motorcycle rider, I don't like loud pipes because it gives non-riders a bad image of riders, and more reason to make rules against them.

Some neighborhoods, condo associations and other municipalities have banned motorcycles, primarily due to noise issues.

I did a search and here are some of the hits that came up:
http://www.canyonlakemotorcycleclub.com/

Here is a quote from the first link:

WHY ARE MOTORCYCLES PROHIBITED IN OUR COMMUNITY?
The three reasons for the ban is noise, noise, and noise.

...The irritating noise that most residents associate with motorcycles being loud occurs when an illegal after-market exhaust pipe that exceeds state law has been installed. Harley-Davidson motorcycles with legal exhaust pipes are not loud. Patrol officers used them within Canyon Lake to enforce school bus violations and there were no complaints about their noise (only their presence). The noise issue would also be easy to enforce--cycles that exceed state standards would not be able to operate within the community.

A noise study showed that a single loud motorcycle traveling through Paris in the middle of the night would be heard by 200,000 people. That's a lot of people to irritate just so you can have loud pipes.

That whistle thingy is illegal here.

How is it not illegal there?
beauregaardhooligan • Mar 21, 2008 8:57 pm
I think the topic isn't about trying to showing off, rather it's about being safe.
You can certainly hear any bike with straight pipes well before it comes into view, unless you just happen to be looking that way.
BrianR's statement that "all they do is cause noise ordinances." ignores this fact.
Noise for the sake of noise is surely dumb, but noise for the sake of safety is a proven fact.
One of my pet peeves is bikers that sit at the light and constantly goose the throttle, as if their motor was going to stall. But that doesn't change the fact that loud pipes will let you know there is a bike around, and that *can* save a life.

Not if every potentially dangerous item on the road made a loud noise. people would either go deaf or wear ear defenders. No added safety. also, loud bikes (and other vehicles) can prevent blind pedetrians hearing the pedestrain crossing signals.

Perhaps, though, we could kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, by forcing people with dangerous driving points on their licenses to have these noisemakers attached/mufflers removed. So (a) we can hear the idiots coming, and (b) the noise might lose it's fashion appeal for those who are actually good drivers. I certainly find that operating under the assumption that if i can hear a car a mile away, it is likely to be being badly driven works for me.
lumberjim • Mar 21, 2008 9:46 pm

WHAT HE SAID.

Loud pipes may be good for attracting attention from the car next to you if you are driving at an identical speed, but they have to be really loud and then that invokes the "just pisses people off and makes them hate bikes more principle", so it sort of negates the effect.
spudcon • Mar 24, 2008 10:05 pm
