September 24, 2007: Meteorite hole

It's the Monday Neatorama collaboration image!

Image

Last week a meteor crashed in remote Peru, and it made the news because about 200 people who ran over to figure out what happened, became slightly ill.

Now we have an image of the crater, via the Mail, and it doesn't look all that menacing. In fact they now think the sickness wasn't due to anything from the rock from space, carrying some sort of Andromeda Strain virus or something. They think it was just the gases and dust unearthed from the impact.

Image

They need a redneck games belly flop competition. They now have the perfect diving pit for it.

Of course, when it comes to meteor impacts, nothing matches the massive crater in Arizona, which is nearly a mile wide.

Be sure to visit our friends at Neatorama for more neato items all the time!

I see they've got the lawyer tape up... hate to see God get sued again.
Elspode • Sep 24, 2007 7:56 am
Still, anything falling from the sky and making a 66' diameter hole is pretty damn impressive.

Luckily, the meteors usually know to pick the remote spots to land on.

I feel sorry for the kid who lost his volleyball. (1st picture)

True enough.

Of all my creations, lawyers are the only breed that I've serious regretted.

Oh well, they'll never find my secret account in the Cayman islands anyway.

He didn't lose the soccer ball. The Peruvian player was actually doing a slide-kick for the game winning goal when God, who is a Brazilian fan, struck him with a meteor to stop him.

Soccer fans can be so cruel.

I thought about soccer ball...but 1) the stripes looked more like a volleyball to me and 2) I hate soccer and 3) I never really thought it was a ball at all ;)

Apparently it may have been arsenic in the groundwater.
spudcon • Sep 24, 2007 12:29 pm
It was probably not a meteorite at all, but someone's septic tank exploding.

Does anyone have an idea of how big the rock was?

No, but soccer/volleyball size would be my guess...

IIRC the Winslow meteor was theorized to be about 50-100 ft in diameter

Now that is some funny shit, the Russians can be idiots at times:

American spy satellite downed in Peru as US nuclear attack on Iran thwarted

...where the first 'truce' between Americas War Leaders and its Military Forces was 'negotiated' by billionaire Warren Buffett as intermediary between the rival power blocs.

So, good ol WB is now a intermediary between opposing forces within the government. Huh, who'd a thunk it.

...as the United States Military have 'clearly signaled' that it will not allow nuclear weapons to be used, even to the extent of denying to their War Leaders one of their most prized spy satellites used to guide their nuclear cruise missiles to their intended Iranian targets.

Well, it is a good thing our military doesn't answer to anyone else in the government.

[/sarcasm]
