carjacked
I met a guy today that was buying a new Armada. Let's call him 'Huy'. He had bought one from us in 2005. He had to replace it. An LE...(that means leather, and moonroof, and chrome wheels and stuff). He requested LoJack. Usually, when someone asks for LoJack, they've had a car stolen.
But this guy had been carjacked! I mean..you hear about it on the news...and see it in movies and video games. And you picture it happening in LA or NYC..... This was an Asian guy that lived in Philly. Sunday they had driven out to Hershey Park and had a fun time riding the rides, being together, laughing.......and Monday morning.....pow! A gun in your face.
His 8 year old son is in the back seat......and Huy was pulled out of the car with a shiny silver gun under his chin......"My Son! My Son!"
The carjacker shoved the boy out to him roughly and sped away in Huy's car.
Now my imagination is filling in blanks. ( I have a 9yr old son) and I'm imagining it happening to me. I look down at my son.....he looks at me...I am so relieved that he's safe and unhurt, and that it's over, but......I put myself in his shoes and don't understand why my dad...who had been infallible and invincible didn't stop the bad men from taking our car.....and why they would take our car in the first place?
now deal with the aftermath.....(this is Huy's retelling again).the police come......and his son tells the detective....."I don't want that car back."
When the detective asks why not, he says, "because the Black man is in there", and starts to cry. Huy tells me that his kid is afraid of black men now. He says, " I tell him that it's not the same guy....but he......"
As a Dad, i try to pay attention to little things that might stick with my kids....things that they will hold as core truths as they develop....I try to instill important values.....I teach them about the Good path, and the Bad path....and how they diverge with decisions they make.....
I see a tree structure in my mind. I see the importance of early impression.
Now this guy has to deal with not only the mundane inconvenience of replacing his car, the loss of equity and time at work, but also....he now has to try to convince his 8yr old son that not all black people want to steal his car.
Just a little rub: The car he bought to replace it had NO leather, NO moonroof, and NO chrome wheels. It does have
LoJack with
Early Warning and
equity protection. I gave him the last part for free.
2 minutes of time on a Monday morning, and this dude has to deal with this shit for who knows how long? A month to straighten the mess out with insurance and getting a new car.....but his son? fuck me.
That's exactly the kind of stuff I fear most in life. I call it RBS. Random Bad Shit.
It would have been a lot worse for the kid if the guy had fought and been shot.
what do you mean? are you going to try to turn this into another of your gun control debates?
what do you mean? are you going to try to turn this into another of your gun control debates?
No, I'm trying to turn this into another enough is enough thread.:stickpoke
BTW, I NEVER espoused gun troll. EAD.
Shit like this scares the crap out of me. Does the fact that my kid sits in a toddler carseat with a relatively complicated buckle mean the guy is going to be less likely to bother letting him out?
I have nightmare imaginations of driving off a bridge into water all the time too.
Yea...I can understand this. I live in a smaller town but it's extremely touristy and usually civilized. We do have cholos and gangs as well. My husband and I were parking to go to our anniversary dinner in a premiere high rolling part of town, we got out of the vehicle, and some cholos drove by and threatened to steal our vehicle if we kept it parked there.....Well other people heard them, and were too shocked to say anything, and of course me with the mouth started to approach their vehicle (obviously pissed), and asked them to reiterate about their intentions to steal our car. They drove off and laughed of course- but this kind of crap goes on now in broad daylight with many people around...which is why I live in the country and try not to do too much hanging out in the cities.. Full of RBS.
In 2 incidents, I got robbed as a kid and beaten up as a teenager...in both cases, the attackers were black teens. I think my parents used it as a crutch to dislike blacks in general, but I can honestly say that I never felt that way. After I got robbed (I was 11 at the time), I was afraid of black people for a while, but got past that. After the beatdown, I didn't have any contempt for black people...just the assholes that beat me up.
LJ, I thought at first that you were carjacked, before I started reading!
that's why you should always read first, and react later.
which reminds me of blue's sig line:
remember, if you see a tornado.....point at it and yell, "Tornado!" ...and run like hell!
But it's fun to react first--gets the adrenaline going.
I had a friend who was the victim of an aborted child snatching. She had the presence of mind to fight and yell, and managed to get away. She told it as an interesting long-ago story, but I am pretty sure some of her issues with being touched by strangers (of either sex) must be related to that incident. She also had a terrible fear of men who wore hats for months, and even as an adult felt suspicious of anyone when she couldn't see their eyes.
I wish people who did these sorts of things could realise for just a few seconds what they put their victims though. I don't mean as retribution, just to see if they have any kind of empathy at all...
I think if we gave the death penalty for stealing car stereos, there'd be a lot less of these guys to go around jacking cars and fucking up people's lives. I do take solace in the fact that the same asshole will probably be found dead in the trunk of somebody's burning stolen car someday when a drug deal goes bad, or the guy he tries to fence the next Lexus to decides that he's just gonna take it, too.
Animals like this need to be excised from society like the cancers they are. And no, I don't care that they were neglected abused children, products of a broken home, or suffered other trauma growing up. People make their own decisions. This fuck decided to be, well, a fuck. Anything bad that happens to him after that is par for the course.
I have a family member who claims not to be racist, but insists on using terms like 'nigger' and 'coon' and 'porch monkey' in front of my daughter.
At one point when she was 4 years old, she told me she didn't like brown or dark brown skin color - it was ugly and dirty and she just didn't like it. After a lengthy discussion, followed by me pointing out my dark Native American skin in comparison with her fair, freckled Welsh skin, I told her she must not like me and she must think I'm dirty and ugly because of my skin color. She saw the light and wept.
Granted, my situation does not involve a violent criminal act, but we do have to contend, virtually on a daily basis, with said family member who is very very close to my daughter, and who continually uses slurs in front of her. It was so sad to see her go from describing the little boy she played with in preschool as "the tall boy who shares nicely, the one with the brown skin", to "the black boy".
I can't imagine being in that situation with my son. By myself is one thing. Crap my pants and then try to move on. With my son, I would be scared, pissed, and relieved all at the same time. That much emotion would not be good while talking to the cops.
I wish people who did these sorts of things could realise for just a few seconds what they put their victims though. I don't mean as retribution, just to see if they have any kind of empathy at all...
Yes, a few minutes of their time screws up days, weeks, months or years of your life! At 19, my apartment was broken into and my TV, stereo, albums, etc., were stolen. For a long time, when I came home alone, I had to enter the apartment, and before locking myself in, I had to look all through the place, under my bed, in the closet and shower,.....and even then I wasn't completely comfortable for a while.
I went to see Stardust this weekend. It was alright....pretty good...
Anyway...It was raining and my husband pulled the car around to pick me up after the movie let out. I was standing there and a girl and what looked like her mother were leaving the theater quickly with what looked like the girl's boyfriend trailing after. Apparently some guy had just punched her in the theater and they were telling the boyfriend about it. He hesitated to get in the car after hearing about it, but the mom said, "don't worry she got him back really good". They quickly left (escaping the scene) and I see a guy leave with blood on his face with a green '13' jersey on(also escaping the scene). He leaves. My husband pulls around and just as he does the police show up and enter the theater. I saw the truck Mr. Puncher left in and I'll be careful to avoid that screw up....(it's a small town at times)
What would prompt you to punch a random woman in a movie theater?
My husband was hearing comments in the theater as we were leaving like, "did you see his face"?!?
That could have been anyone. Sounds like she kicked the crap out of him in response. I was glad to hear it. But jesus...can't everyone just have a nice Sunday matinee without the "RBS"?
I'm involved in some major RBS right now. I can (probably) talk about it in mid-October. Till then, I'll have to hold my breath on this thread.

It does have LoJack with Early Warning and equity protection. I gave him the last part for free.

Don't worry, he made it back on the undercoating and the "rusty jones".:D

I have been. for almost 4 years now.
Spexxvet, enough is enough when the bad guy is lying there with a third eye and no brain wave. If you can arrange that. You can't always, but when you can, that chap's troublemaking years have come to a sudden end, and that's what's wanted.
At least by non-hoplophobes -- who seem to be the people with sense on their side in such matters.
Raging against self defense never works.:stickpoke Particularly on those who prefer self-defense to death.

So explain how the jackee's having a handgun, in this situation, would have helped.
If you think there's a chance of this happening to you, which there is, what are you doing to prevent it from happening, or to prepare for it if it does? I don't just mean carjacking, but all manner of assault.
The best defense is to avoid the situation in the first place, be aware of your surroundings, stay out of certain high-risk places, keep your car well maintained and gassed up, avoid being the victim as much as possible. Beyond that, learn to defend yourself, at least a little.
Here's a video called
Carjacking Defense Moves. I don't know if this would have helped in the particular situation being discussed, but at least it gets you thinking about options, instead of being resigned to be the victim.
(Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to imbed the video.)
There are lots of other self-defense videos on that site, but I haven't watched them.
Good advice HLJ....too bad the "high risk places" have turned into everywhere. That's the nature of RBS....it's not random if you know it's likely.

But if you think of it in terms of probability, some places are much more conducive to RBS - you can reduce your odds of being victimized by avoiding certain places.
Other things can increase your risk: if you walk around wearing lots of gold and jewelery; if you tend to get drunk and pass out in alleys; if you drive certain car models (which is why I'm surprised the guy in this story replaced his car with the same model); if you walk down the street unaware of what's happening around you - you'll increase your risk of being a victim.
You can't decrease your risk to zero, but you can substantially reduce it.

There....this is a good response.
Again.
:D
ie: I am agreeing with you.
Always be prepared is my point.
I missed Cloud's post #2 on what "RBS" meant, so I
checked it on urbandictionary.com
This thread is hilarious and y'all didn't know it.

Hey UT, that's funny. Now I'm re-reading this thread, substituting different RBS acronyms. (Kind of like reading fortune cookies and adding "...naked in bed" to the end.)
I'm involved in some major RBS right now. I can (probably) talk about it in mid-October. Till then, I'll have to hold my breath on this thread.

lol!!!
Now, Spexx, there is your severe mental problem, right on display: you're a rager against self defense, and you've been one for I don't know how long. A sane approach -- and I've told you in some detail yours isn't -- is an approach conducive to self defense, even unto killing tools. You always taking the hoplophobic side isn't going to persuade anyone, and it shouldn't have persuaded you. And before you start yelling about "civilized," remember that it is civilized to defeat the aberrant barbarians. That's what my approach is about -- yours is about paying Danegeld and hoping to get rid of the Dane. Ain't gonna happen.
You reduce manmade RBS by reducing perpetrators, by conversion or by ballistics, but above all by reducing perpetrators.

I'd been considering taking a self-defense course for a while. This thread got me motivated to do it. I'm now going to class twice a week. My wife is planning to take the women's self-defense class the next time it's offered (it's a weekend course).
Thanks.
strange what motivates us, isn't it?
here's an interesting progression of events for you:
I read a post by...of all people....fucknutscockpit....that, while bashing me(which he refers to never doing in a long PM he sent me, btw) .......anyway....he says to the crazy chick.....'you have good content'......and it occurs to me, that i think of myself as having good content, but really haven't written any thing for you people other than wise cracks and insults for a good long while......in truth...i USED to have good content......
starting a new paragraph just cuz it makes it easier to read here.....So, I make the thread about being sick of my own shit.....which makes me think....wel....just dont whine about it, put some shit up like you used to do.
so i did. I just let some real life out on the cellar for you. something i came across that made me go ....hmmm.
then there are replies, and you start to see that this shit actually happens, and then....there is a carjacking self defense link.....and now you're going to give some of your money to a person that will give you a skill in exchange.
if you get killed trying to defend yourself against a carjacker......i'll hunt you down in the next life, and lock you in a room with badgerphone for like....15 minutes.
Boo-be-do-be-doo!
Boo-be-do-be-doo!
Ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring...
lumberjim - you're alright, you know? You're alright.
Now I feel bad for nominating you for Mrs. Cellar 2008.
don't feel bad. i can totally take a joke.
at least you're funny. when suxxvet tried the same joke, it fell flat. man...it would suck to be him.
Just so you know - it wasn't me, it was the pod.
rk's on his way over to help me burn it.
Spexx, not to be ad hominem, but on self defense I'm the sane one of us two, and I'm cooler about it as well. We all know what happened to you the last time you tangled with me, rkzen, and xoxoxoBruce. You did not merely lose that argument, you jettisoned it overboard.

Wait, jimmylegs just advocated not defending oneself against a carjacker. Go get him.
No no, he advocated not dying while poorly defending yourself. You've just got to make sure you do it right.
On the subject of self-defense courses, my mother made me take one when I was maybe 12, and a refresher course at least one other time. At the time I thought it was overkill, but later there were scenarios I found myself in where I was grateful to have (though never need) the skills. I will definitely be making my girls take one someday, assuming I ever have any.
Just grab the kid and hold him in front of you in case the carjacker gets one shot off before you can draw.
a'la Dead Zone.
What a scene!
"You won't have any problem finding him, Officer... he's leaving a smoke trail that smells like burning polyester and wearing singed Bermuda shorts that used to be a pair of slacks."
Just grab the kid and hold him in front of you in case the carjacker gets one shot off before you can draw.
Wise beyond your years sir! :notworthy
