KUT, Iraq - American commanders in southern Iraq say Shiite sheiks are showing interest in joining forces with the U.S. military against extremists, in much the same way that Sunni clansmen in the western part of the country have worked with American forces against al-Qaida.

This probably doesn't mean much in overall view of Iraq but it is a positive sign there is some direction and goal in Iraq coming from both the Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq.

Now if only the power-losing Sunnis and the power-gaining Shiites get along.

Neither the Sunnis, nor the Shiites, want the other side getting outside help. I think they have figured out with other outside influences eliminated, the Americans probably won't take sides.

why wouldn't america take side? because they're equally acceptable? srsly?

What the hell do we care how the two, or three, settle it... as long as they settle it and get a government working?
