August 22, 2007: Flesh-eating fish spa

Axlrosen suggests this item from here. No it isn't just a way to get swimsuit models on the IotD. What we have here is a spa in China, where people pay to soak in hot spring water. And in that water...
A newly emerged "fish spa" is becoming fashionable in many hot spring resorts, and has attracted even more customers, all curious about this peculiar treatment.

At such a spa, many Garra Rufa, a type of small tropical fish, also nicknamed Chinchin Yu, nibble fish or simply doctor fish, are put in hot springs. As they can live and swim freely in at least 43-degree-hot waters, they are naturally used for the treatment of skin diseases in such spas.

When placed in the spa, these fish can feed themselves on the dead cells of the human body, since they only consume such cells, leaving the healthy skin of the human body to grow. The whole process is reportedly free of pain. It won't hurt and the bather might feel a pleasant tingling on his or her skin.

Well, I think I would wear the tightest bathing suit possible.

Next door is the spa that has the blow fish and sucker fish in it. It's a much more popular spa.

I prefer the dust mites that live in my sheets and eat my skin.
Nikolai • Aug 22, 2007 9:37 am
So can old people use them, cause you know old people are prety much held togeather by there layers of dead skin.
piercehawkeye45 • Aug 22, 2007 9:42 am
That sounds cool but I would still think my feet and hands would be raw due to all my callouses.

Is the price for this extremely high or something affordable?

TIM: He'll do you up a treat mate!
GALAHAD: Oh, yeah?
ROBIN: You mangy scots git!
TIM: I'm warning you!
ROBIN: What's he do, nibble your bum?
TIM: He's got huge, sharp-- eh-- he can leap about-- look at the bones!

She has way too much dead flesh in the pookie area. Perhaps she's just trying to get a cheap Brazilian?:headshake

Look in the second picture how they're clustered around the feet and knees. I'm not sure I care if my knees glow.
jester • Aug 22, 2007 11:32 am
Eww, that would drive me insane. That's precisely why I don't get into lakes - the thought of a fish nibbling:headshake (other than their just nasty) - barely get into the ocean.

Having been a mermaid in a past life, i don't think the fish would bother me so much...but the thought of flesh eating fish is pretty creepy. ;)
skysidhe • Aug 22, 2007 12:45 pm
I notice they seem to mass around the feet.
Clodfobble • Aug 22, 2007 1:02 pm
You could sit in a vat of maggots and get the same effect, you know.

And they're easier to come by!

It would be fun to throw something dead in there and see what happens.
Clodfobble • Aug 22, 2007 1:19 pm
It's a shame they don't eat bones, you could dispose of some bodies at night when the spa is closed.

Just for laughs, replace a few of the fish with pirrannah (sp.?) and see if it still tingles. :-D

Why aren't they naked?
Razzmatazz13 • Aug 22, 2007 10:31 pm
I've had this "effect" in many a pond/stream in my day when all the goo from the water settles on my hands and minnows come up to nibble it off...but having my whole body in it....wouldn't you accidentally step on/mush a lot of the fishies?
Happy Monkey • Aug 22, 2007 10:40 pm
Think of it as evolution in action.

Actually, I expect the fish are fast enough to avoid a wading human.

Shawnee - I think you are a mermaid in this life.

But, the fish eat the flesh, not the other way around. How could flesh eat fish? Though I did have one housemate whose feet could eat shoes, so maybe...
AndyDan • Aug 23, 2007 9:24 pm
Finally, an IoTD that eats you, not the other way around!
DanaC • Aug 23, 2007 10:20 pm
Hullo Andy! Welcome to the Cellar
kgg • Aug 23, 2007 11:42 pm
I'd go back to the sucking and blowing part. Mm..hmm.
DanaC • Aug 24, 2007 7:06 am
Yeap...we're all about the sucking and the blowing in the Cellar.

So you say. I've seen precious little evidence m'self. (Barring the schoolyard taunts "You suck!", of course. Sticks and stones...) Put up or shut up I say.

Oh, no. I was noticing your algae-bra.
Shawnee123 • Aug 24, 2007 12:56 pm
Leave my bra-nacles out of it.

Groan :headshake

I wish I had time. I must pack-up and head to the airport.
