August 8, 2007: Giant lego man (is crushing your head)

Axlrosen points this item out from the Chicago Tribune, where the full story is nothing but a caption:
A huge Lego man is seen at the beach of Zandvoort in the Netherlands, where the owners of a beach pub discovered it on Aug. 07, 2007. Nobody seemed to know where it came from.

Remember when newspaper people knew how to write? Googling around for more info, it turns out that this giant didn't show up all... erect, and stuff, he actually just washed ashore on Tuesday. No explanation.

It had to be on purpose, don't you think?

Giant Lego man washed up on Dutch beachPosted Wed Aug 8, 2007 6:03am AEST

Washed up: Children play around the giant Lego man (Reuters: Paul Vreeker)
A giant, smiling Lego man has been fished out of the sea in the Dutch resort of Zandvoort.

Workers at a drinks stall rescued the 2.5-metre tall model, which had a yellow head and blue torso.

"We saw something bobbing about in the sea and we decided to take it out of the water," said a stall worker. "It was a life-sized Lego toy."

A woman nearby added: "I saw the Lego toy floating towards the beach from the direction of England."

The toy was later placed in front of the drinks stall.

Floating from England, eh?

Floating from England, eh?

When something washes up on the beach, how do you tell it came from the direction of England? It's probably like a Trojan horse, but is filled with angry elm tree seeds, looking to get even for Dutch Elm disease.

Hah. So that's where Ego went.....yeah....we all had a big fuckin party last week...the whole country, and Ego figured he'd buzz the Dutch for a laff.
xoxoxoBruce • Aug 8, 2007 6:14 pm
I guess we can't eat this one.
I was wondering if it was part of a set... where are #s 1 through 8?
Elspode • Aug 8, 2007 7:43 pm
Isn't anyone going to ask why someone has graphically inserted "No real than you are" on the picture of the front of this thing?
DanaC • Aug 8, 2007 7:55 pm
Ohhhh, so glad you can see that too!.....didn't want to say y'know...

it not inserted, look here, it just looks that way because its so in focus while everything else isn't, because its not actually lego, because its a jpeg and because it's missing the word 'more'.
DanaC • Aug 8, 2007 8:14 pm
Why is it missing the word 'more'?
claynjen • Aug 8, 2007 8:27 pm
did anyone notice that the girl on the left in the 2nd pic was actually copping a feel?
BeltNah • Aug 8, 2007 9:18 pm
I found this yesterday also and wanted to give a link for the page and pictures so that it could be used for an image of the day but couldn't find out how to enter it.. If I find something interesting who do I tell?

Meanwhile, somewhere in England, there is a giant lego house with a giant lego woman wondering where her husband has got to.

Seems like it is an actual thing:
http://www.egoleonard.com/

And just on the off-chance your Dutch isn't quite fluent just yet, here's a bit of what it says...

"My name is Ego Leonard and I greet you from the virtual world. A world which for me stands for luck, solidarity, everything green and blooming, and without rules and restrictions. Recently, my world has been flooded with luck-seekers and those who want power. Many new meetings in my virtual world have left me very curious as to your surroundings. I am here because I thought of your world and wanted to discover and understand it. Show me all of those beautiful things which your world has to offer. Be my friend, and tell me tales, take me on your travels to beautiful landscapes, show me your words and gestures."

:yelsick:

So what was Dance Valley?
Chickenings • Aug 9, 2007 9:24 am
It's a music festival in Amsterdam:

Ego Leonard was an art installation there this year. Still doesn't explain how he randomly washed up on the beach somewhere else though. Maybe it was his one shot at freedom.

<said a stall worker. "It was a life-sized Lego toy.">

Everyday Lego toys are life-sized. This one is larger-than-life. Just wanted to clear that up.
DanaC • Aug 9, 2007 12:32 pm
That's an excellent point frank.
Coign • Aug 9, 2007 12:41 pm
Ego Leonard looks pissed and this scares me ... a lot.
Shawnee123 • Aug 9, 2007 12:44 pm

That's interesting. So LegoMan is a wetback. They should put up a wall. That would keep the rest of those LegoMen out.
xoxoxoBruce • Aug 12, 2007 4:23 pm
It's not enough of a problem to warrant a wall, yet. Just shoot them on sight.
Cloud • Aug 12, 2007 7:08 pm
the title of this thread makes me laugh! especially the crushing your head part, LOL! (squish)

I think that it's very significant that so many years afterwards, so many of us here get that.
DanaC • Aug 13, 2007 1:20 pm
*nods* I loved that show. I loved that character. I can still hear his intonation clear as day.

Another one of these giant lego dudes washed up. This time, on a beach in Florida.

The comments in Boing Boing say that a new Lego park is opening up about two hours north of this beach. So must be some sort of viral marketing. So that's one in Holland, one in England, and one in Florida.

The second phase of the invasion is beginning.

First, the Legobots inflitrated agents into every household on the planet. Then the leader are beamed down to "wash up" on beaches. Soon they will send the signal to the sleeper agents to begin their self assembly.

We are doomed.

8-foot-tall Lego Man washes up on Florida beach, held in custody
The 8-foot-tall, 100-pound fiberglass statue that resembles the little plastic guys that come in a Lego set was discovered bobbing gently in ankle-deep surf at the Siesta Key Beach in Florida, just before dawn on Tuesday.

The front of his shirt was emblazoned with a grammatically incorrect message: "NO REAL THAN YOU ARE." The name "Ego Leonard" was written on the back of his shirt.

Initially, some wondered if the Lego Man was a publicity stunt put on by Legoland, which recently opened a new theme park in Orlando.

But a spokeswoman for the company said that Legoland takes no credit for the stunt and is not behind it. "I wish we could say we did it, it was a brilliant guerrilla PR stunt," said Julie Estrada, the spokeswoman. A more likely explanation is that it's all part of an anonymous Dutch artist's experiment.

Google "Ego Leonard," and you'll find he has his own website, written in Dutch with some English translation.

"I am here to discover and learn about your world and thoughts," he writes. "Show me all the beautiful things that are there to admire and experience in your world. Let’s become friends, share your story with me, take me with you on a journey through beautiful meadows, words, sounds and gestures."

The first one was #9. Bruce wondered what happened to 1-8..... Anyone catch this ones number?
