sub sandwich

Jeboduuza • Aug 7, 2007 12:37 pm
Subway or Quiznos?
Or some other sub making sandwich place?
Perry Winkle • Aug 7, 2007 12:56 pm
I don't eat anywhere with more than three locations worldwide.

Make your own sandwiches. They taste better and are cheaper.

Of those two? Quiznos, hands down. I love me some Black Angus on rosemary parmesan bread with the hot sauce.

When I lived in Jacksonville, Firehouse Subs was da bomb, for a chain-like sub shop.

When I lived in Gainesville, there was a hole-in-the-wall joint called Hogan's Heroes. It was a sub/sandwhich shop and bar all in one. Grill behind part of the bar so you could watch them make your spicy meatball with hot and sweet peppers... some table seating, and a half-assed attempt at a sports bar. I don't know what it was about that place, but they had the best.subs.EVER.

Locally, we have a mom-n-pop place with 2 or 3 locations around town called Russo's. Old man Russo has to be 147 years old by now and that old bastard still gets up at 4:00 a.m. to bake the fresh bread for the subs every day.
glatt • Aug 7, 2007 1:54 pm
In Hartford, Anthony's makes a good grinder.
wolf • Aug 7, 2007 2:38 pm
Subs ain't hoagies, and what they serve in Quiznos and Subway ain't actually food.
lumberjim • Aug 7, 2007 2:57 pm
yeah. quiznos is to hoagies as taco bell is to mexican food.

if you dont live around Pretzelvania, you dont get the real deal. even from guys that used to live here and moved into your area and opened authentic philly cheese-steak places. and not every place in pretzelvania makes a good hoagie. you gotta ask the local fat italian guys where to get em.

Pudge's is the best place near Wolf, IMO. Around here, there are a few....Beltempo's is passable for being out here in Morgantown. WEst Chester has several places that get it. Lorenzo's (The Nigerian Hoagie weighs 4 lbs!)

if they get rolls like Cacia's makes......the rest will follow.

You guys are making me hungry. No good sammiches here in old Hoodbridge, VA. I seriously have not found ONE SINGLE PLACE that makes a good sandwich (that I'm willing to drive to).
bluecuracao • Aug 7, 2007 10:08 pm
In Philly, we are truly blessed to have so many great hoagie joints. It amazes me that Subway and Quizno's survive here.

It's a fairly long drive for you for a sandwich, but the Italian Store in Arlington makes an outstanding sub. Their pizza is the best in town too.

Now hang on, I wasn't claiming Thundercloud was a cheesesteak place. A sub and a cheesesteak are completely different things.

You've just convinced me, however, that the next time I'm in Texadelphia I will be taking a photo of my swear-to-god authentic cheesesteak and posting it for your mockery.
jamesdalphonse1 • Aug 8, 2007 3:51 pm
in Utica, NY, Dellano's on Genessee street makes great subs. Fresh meat and cheeses better than Subway. Although, Quizno's isn't bad for a conglomerate operation.
jester • Aug 8, 2007 4:34 pm
I used to go to Subway, but no longer. I haven't been to Quizno's - heard they were overrated. We have a Firehouse Sub, but I haven't been there. We also have a Nixon's Deli - so so. However, we do have a Lenny's Sub Shop - Love It - nothing is pre-made (subway) all of the meats & cheese are sliced when you order your sandwich. Mmm Good Stuff:yum:

Port of Subs was started here in Reno, NV, is in most western states, and the place I prefer to go to.

I gotta know ... what makes it Nigerian?

More in your neck of the woods, I love the steaks, hoagies, and other food at Rino's in Exton, too. John's Steaks in Frazier rocks muchly as well.
jinx • Aug 9, 2007 2:50 pm
Johns Steaks in Frazer used to be Johns Pizza in Thorndale - which was legendary. It split into Johns/Frazer, which is pretty good, and Joeys/Thorndale, which sucks hairy balls.

I don't know what makes it Nigerian,...that's just what it's called. It's a turkey and roast beef hoagie.

We used to hang out at Rinos after the mall closed when i was in jr high. My friend Pat worked there thru high school...Occasionally, we used to call 1/2 hour before close, and order some kind of bizarre pizza, and never go get it.....Then pat would bring it home after he got off.

Well, it's got some bites taken because I started eating before I remembered my vow to take a picture of it. Ignore the jalapenos, that's my addition. However, you may note the little cup of liquid cheese that comes with it--down here we call it queso, but it's basically Cheese Whiz. I even got a closeup of the bread for your inspection, LJ. So which is it? Authentic enough, or a pathetic wannabe?

We do not eat at Subway, but do occasionally enjoy Quizno's (toasty!) and Jimmy John's. There was a sandwich shop that Keryx's dad took her to called Pickle Barrel, it has since closed (probably over 15 years ago!) but it had the softest bread for the best sandwiches!

the meat looks about right, tho the cheese ratio is low... but the bread looks a bit suspect...spongy not crispy.... and, as bruce says whiz is for teh gheys. sharp provolone or american. also, it looks tiny. and yes, the jalapenos and corn chips put it in a totally foreign environment.

but if you like them, hey.....if ever you come up here, let me treat you to one. k?
Urbane Guerrilla • Aug 10, 2007 12:15 am
I dunno, you guys... I like Subway, Quiznos, and Jersey Mike's.

There's a local outfit that my former manager, rest his soul -- he was from Allentown PA and was mighty particular about his cheese steak sandwiches -- was very partial to. The Great Central Steak and Hoagie, four or five restaurants in Ventura County. No Cheese Whiz. All the yellow pepperoncini you can stand. Cheese steaks and sundry variations featuring marinara sauce. "Three thousand miles to Philly; eat here."
lumberjim • Aug 10, 2007 12:38 am
there used to be a deli right near my moms house. When I say right near, I mean that it was the closest store save one. It was about a 5 minute ride in the car, or a 2 hour ride by bicycle with a gang of friends.

Wright's Deli.

They made a Pizza steak that actually melted in your mouth. You hear people say that..."it melts in your mouth" but they are just being poetic. These fucking things actually melted in your mouth. They had great sauce, and put the perfect combination of cheese and steak in there......I dont know what else....could have been diced babies, but they were special.

They also made a kickass turkey club on wheat. BIG.

The ride home was always a little harder. Full tummies, and more uphilliness. We used to get garbage pail kids there too.

It's a shame...the new Acme squeezed their business out so bad that they sold, and are now a catering company....."whopdego's or something

Yeah, they put the provolone slices under the meat, which I don't really get, but maybe that's how it's done. I know someone here was a huge fan of the Whiz, was it wolf maybe?

Size-wise, the sandwich is about 9 inches long. You're right though, the bread is a soft roll, not crispy at all. I'll be happy to be treated to all the food anyone wants to buy me if I ever manage to make it up to Pennsylvania! :yum:

Lettuce, spinach, a bit of green pepper, a tiny bit of onion, lathered in mustard.

Shaddup, i promise im not crazy... stop looking at me like that!

Clodfobble;373582 wrote:

When the meat (and onions for me) are about done, they pile a windrow on the grill, about the length of the roll and melt the cheese over it like a cheeseburger. When it's all ready, lay the split roll over the cheese, slip the spatula under the meat and flip the whole pile over, so yes, the cheese is under the meat. That helps glue the meat to the roll and makes it easier to eat... without steak falling out of the cheesesteak.

A place called Frankies just opened on Mac Dade Blvd in folsom. Frank used to work at Geno's in Philly - most excellent steaks. I prefer the wiz wit, but thats just me.
Undertoad • Aug 12, 2007 8:28 am
Working at Geno's wouldn't give anyone clues at steak production quality.

I have Campo's up the block from my house. I shouldn't even mention Subway and Quizno's in the same paragraph. Oops.
lumberjim • Aug 12, 2007 6:53 pm
man.....their delivery prices seem reasonable......assuming they fly out in person and construct the sammich for you on location. golly! $65 for a cheese-steak overnight. whook!
bluecuracao • Aug 12, 2007 7:22 pm
Eh, I don't know that I'd pay $65 for an overnighted Campo's cheesesteak. They're good, but not my favorite.

An Italian Special hoagie on an Amoroso's seeded roll, on the other hand...

Philly Hoagies
Served with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, onions, salt, pepper, oregano and oil
(American, provolone, Swiss, sharp provolone .50 cents extra)

Campo's Italian Special $6.50*
Dilusso salami, ham capacolla, peppered ham, pepperoni, prosciutto, provolone

*local price :)

Had to jump in quickly on James post. Lot of ethnicities working in the small working class city that is Utica, NY. FYI James, check out the little Italian bakery. Oriskaney by John St. East side of town. If I remember right.

South Jersey, but I don't think they do the seeded rolls, either. I haven't come across them over there--only in Philly.

If you do have a hoagie place near you that has Amoroso's or Sarcone's sesame seed rolls, you really should try one at least once. They are incredible.

There was a place called "Breads of Italy" across from where Jinx used to work. They had seeded Semolina rolls. It would shred your soft pallete, ......with crunchy goodness.

Year-rows. Yeah actually I'd probably prefer the cheese steak because the gyro is just way too greasy, those Greeks.

It's across the street from Walmart, and I'm out of bigbox and back home before they open. About 20 miles away.
Maybe with a coupon I'd go back.
