July 26, 2007: Personal jet noticed

xoB finds this set from location unknown, with his only tag "I know some people are afraid to fly commercial, but this is ridiculous." Yes. So the most of the set is hereby presented, and we assume it is not a fake because it's far more interesting to assume it's real. I particularly like the ear-to-ear grin on the gent in the last shot.

Looks like he's launched form the air, instead of taking off from the ground.

Very cool!
yesman065 • Jul 26, 2007 1:29 pm
That has to be a total rush!
Flint • Jul 26, 2007 1:34 pm
The URL seen on the wing re-directs to this page.
glatt • Jul 26, 2007 1:35 pm
His name is Yves Rossy, and this is his web page.
Uisge Beatha • Jul 26, 2007 2:02 pm
Hah, beat that, Batman!
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 26, 2007 2:04 pm
And he's seriously nuts, from his bio.
jester • Jul 26, 2007 3:12 pm
Seems like I saw that on the Discovery Channel or something like that. Not a lot of protection should he "crash".
Kumbulu • Jul 26, 2007 3:16 pm
Want!
jester • Jul 26, 2007 3:22 pm
Ok, just curious, but in the 2nd picture where they have their "thumbs up" - doesn't it look like the guy in the middle is comparing his thumb to the "pilots"? Like he's saying -

"It's suppose to be straight up, not to the side" or "not pointing at me".
Uisge Beatha • Jul 26, 2007 4:04 pm
Hey, those eyes are sharp as well as pretty, jester.

well, golly:o

seems to me, our pilot here - Yves Rossy - has spent much of his life in pursuit of adrenaline rushes if you explore around his site mentioned above. skysurfing off a hot air balloon ... skysurfing then ditching shute to snowboard down the mountain ... fighter pilot ... cool!
bham • Jul 26, 2007 4:31 pm
screw the flying bit, check out those watches!

WTF?

Here's the inspiration:

And now, a message from our sponsor.
Shawnee123 • Jul 26, 2007 4:42 pm

BeltNah • Jul 26, 2007 5:31 pm

Nice!

Someone posted the batsuit with jets. That was cool too. Launched from a balloon.
wolf • Jul 26, 2007 7:24 pm
If the dude truly had a sense of style, that suit would be silver.

No, sorry - that's for surfers.

Yeeeah,(spoken like Office Space boss), I wonder how they figured out they needed to kick him out've a plane...?

Answer:
After he tried running bent over 110MPH down the runway?
Sheldonrs • Jul 26, 2007 11:16 pm
Looks cool and you can piss on skydivers and zoom away before they land. :-)

I don't think that works real well in freefall. I like the intentions though.

Now, if we could put him on a treadmill that runs opposite to his forward running on takeoff...

And landed via parachute when his gas ran out.

*lol* naughty!

According to the website he had to shuck the wings and bail, letting them crash. I wonder why, considering he can pop a chute wearing them?
Happy Monkey • Jul 27, 2007 7:38 pm
Too heavy for the chute?
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 27, 2007 7:53 pm
Don't think so considering he uses the chute, with the wing on, after a normal flight. Maybe the chute wouldn't work and the gear was too heavy for his back-up chute, though.

Possible. I jumped with over a hundred pounds of gear before. Aerodynamically it looks like he would be more streamlined with the chute on his back vs. the front. Smaller chute, less weight, bag the wings and it would only have to support him. I don't know but it makes sense.
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 27, 2007 8:57 pm
If you look at the pictures. it looks like the fairing on the front of the jet-pack contains the post flight chute?

Ah, maybe it wouldn't fire and the fuel made it too heavy.... with no way to jettison fuel like a plane can.

Orrrrrrr, he couldn't handle the extra weight of the monkey and Goat?
Flint • Jul 27, 2007 10:26 pm
He couldn't handle the extra weight of the guilt on his conscience, knowing that the monkey and the goat were photoshopped.

No, I'm wrong. The chute forms like a fairing at the front of the notch in the middle of the wing. Definitely not part of the wing.
