July 11, 2007: Man dressed as tree robs bank

A rather small image today, as it's a shot from a security cam.

At first you think, what the -- why would a man dress like a tree to rob a bank? If he wants to hide from people outside, that's one thing, but to use it to rob a bank? Maybe from the drive-through window, but from the inside?

Axlrosen sends this Manchester Union Leader story of a man who used duct tape to tape branches and leaves to his body in order to perpetrate his crime.

Sometimes people are just broken, and to laugh at those people is wrong, which is why I personally omit the gent's name. That way it's anonymous, and we can say whatever we like about the dude.

Don't laugh, that is his super power. To grow flimsy branches. If that is the only power you have, you would use it to.

Police rake in leafy robbery suspect

Actual headline from the article.

But it's just so funny.

I wonder ...

did he rob the main bank, or just a branch location?

From that angle, it looks like a tree dressed as a man.
But still ... why would a tree rob a bank?
Uisge Beatha • Jul 11, 2007 2:17 pm
Oh, a bank? He thought the sign said bark.

And the police captain was named Dick Tracy -- which makes the whole leafy disguise thing somehow more appropriate.

If a man dressed as a tree robbed a bank in the woods, and nobody was there, would it make any noise?

Oh lord, no kidding? I should read the article...

Ok, and Cap'n Tracy went on to say:

Comic Strip Cop wrote:
Tracy said the robber made off with a bag containing less than $1,000. It appears investigators have since recovered most, if not all, of the money, he said.

He was dressed as a tree, with no weapon, and he got some money? He made off with it? They've recovered MOST of it? Sounds more like Barney Fife is on the case.

Edited to add: lol@ Spexx

Apparently he wanted to hide from the cameras rather than the people present. Guess he didn't know they had low angle cameras.

David letterman had the ushers search the potted palms in the lobby, as a precaution, last night.

That's pretty funny. I missed that.

Spexx, did you mean "dressed like a tree" rather than "dressed like a dress."

Stupid bank... They had no herbicide??

I'm still trying to get this straight in my head:

Guy duct tapes branches to himself. Guy walks into bank. Customers and bankers wonder why a tree is moving about the building, but no need to alarm security or take any security type steps. Tree guy has no weapon. Tree walks up to teller, demands cash, and walks out of building with a grand.

What happens next? Tree guy rips duct-taped branches from body (no short task, I would think) and runs like the wind out of there. He disappears so well that by the time he is caught, he has managed to spend some of the money.

This story has more holes than a tree with squirrels living in it.

There is no law against dressing like a tree.

Bank tellers are instructed to cooperate with demands for money, weapon or not, hit the alarm and not give chase. The money is insured and it's the cops business to catch them, not the tellers.

Most important, nobody gets hurt, which could cost the bank millions instead of a few thousand.

I guess money really is the root of all evil.

Try pulling this stunt in Brazil and when you're caught you'll be burnt for charcoal.
